1 November 2017 Dear Colleagues, A Word From Your President Annmarie Cefoli, BSN, RN, COHN-S, CHC Happy Autumn! This is such a nice time of year with so many activities from pumpkin and apple picking, viewing the fall foliage, costume parties and Thanksgiving celebrations. I hope you will be able to enjoy this colorful season and be thankful for all our blessings! The ANA 2017 Year of the Healthy Nurse is nearing an end. The November topics are focused on Mental Health and Wellness. The December theme is Healthy Eating/Healthy Holidays. If you want to read more about events and activities go to NYSAOHN has recently become part of a website through Nursing Network. This is a wonderful opportunity and means of communication to find out what is happening in the occupational health field. I hope many of you will register and choose to follow NYSAOHN! I attended the 102nd Northeast Association of Occupational Health Nurses (NEAOHN) Annual Conference from 10/4-10/6 held at the Spa at Norwich Inn in Connecticut. The theme for this conference was entitled Worker Well-Being in the 21 st Century. The topics were interesting and thought provoking. It was so nice to see nurses from the northeast states as well as the nurses from the Greater New York chapter. Thanks to the NYSAOHN BOD for nominating me as the 2017 Medique Leadership Award Recipient for NYS. I was very proud and honored to accept this award. As many of you know, my term as President of GNYAOHN will soon be coming to an end in mid January Four years have gone by so quickly! Soon it will be time for me to step down and pass the baton to another nurse. This is the largest chapter in NYS and we must keep this organization alive, active and vibrant. There are other positions open on the board as well, such as President-Elect, Secretary and Director of Nominations/Membership! Surely, someone in our great organization will step up as President. You will be supported and mentored! Lastly, the next GNYAOHN educational dinner meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, 11/14/17. It is about balancing work and cancer. You don t want to miss it! 3 Weight Management: Moving Beyond Calories and BMI June 13, 2017 GNYAOHN Educational Program VOL 54, ISSUE 3 Dr. Holly Lofton, Assistant Professor of Surgery and Medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center, gave an excellent presentation about non-surgical strategies to lose weight through food choices, behavior changes, exercise, meal plans and medications. Her practice combines scientific weight loss techniques and evidence-based medicine to treat the overweight and obese individual. This free meeting was held at the NYU Large Pantry on Park Avenue. Thanks to Barbara Fox and her team for arranging the speaker and location. The delicious, healthy foods provided were compliments of GNYAOHN. If your employer is no longer covering the cost of your attendance at meetings, or the cost of attending prevents you from participating in the organization s activities, we invite you to apply for funding assistance. There is also funding available for research pertaining to occupational health nursing. You can contact the Board for further information. 4

5 Member News Thank you, Audrey Hall, for recruiting Valerie Brancato to join the Greater NY chapter. Audrey will be awarded a free dinner meeting! Congratulations to Katherine Guzman on her retirement from the NYC Transit on August 2 after working 25 years of dedicated service. Katherine was also the President of GNYAOHN from She has relocated to Florida on August 13 and experienced the eye of Hurricane Irma with very little damage. She recently vacationed in China and Japan for 3 weeks with her husband and is awaiting her next adventure! Katherine plans to be in NY the week of Thanksgiving and says she would love to attend a GNYAOHN meeting and be with us. She plans to continue her membership at the local level. Her contact information is available for those who are interested. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement Katherine!! Hope to see you again! Best wishes and speedy recovery to Kate Mimnaugh who had total right knee replacement surgery on September 25, The surgery went well, and she is improving each day. With time and PT, she is getting more mobile. Keep up the great work Kate! A speedy recovery is wished for Karen Ritell who had left knee replacement surgery on October 20, Karen is home recuperating and on a PT regimen. She is venturing outside and plans to return to work in 4-5 weeks and be as good as new. All the best Karen! You get an opportunity to meet members of Congress and other legislators as well as learn about healthcare policies.
