1 October 16 27, 2017 THROUGH THE EYES OF CAREGIVERS 1. SUMMARY Through the Eyes of Caregivers, the brainchild of Dr. DeVonnia Bonimy- Lee, facilitated by Antonius Roberts and a group of very generous artists, clinicians and friends, is a collaboration between local artists and local healthcare practitioners who all share an interest or personal connection to Breast Cancer whether it is through direct survivorship, experience through a loved one and/or through direct clinical work. The two- week exhibit, which showcases works by Max Taylor, Jackson Burnside, Toby Lunn, Antonius Roberts and others, culminates in an evening of educational sessions from the perspective of the healthcare practitioner who will discuss the roles and challenges of the caregiver and outlines ways of support. The goal of the exhibit is to encourage dialogue and open new paths of communication and support for those that care for someone else. Dr. Bonimy- Lee, through her years of providing Physical Therapy for many in the U.S., connected consistently with an additional network of healthcare providers offering counselling, emotional support and community awareness for issues such as: caregiver burnout, spirituality and communication. This exhibit is a first attempt to showcase current feelings, experiences and resources in the Bahamas in an effort to celebrate and redefine, caregivers. A. The Art/Artists i. The art exhibition in Through the Eyes of Caregivers explores the emotional and societal narratives, practices and aesthetics through sculptures, videos, paintings and installations exhibited by local artists who have mastered the skill of social commentary in Bahamian culture. Well known Contemporary artists such as Jackson Burnside via Pam Burnside, Max Taylor, Dave Smith, Toby Lunn and the host, Antonius Roberts present the most honest vision through works of integrity, energy and reflection. The video installation on site shows individuals, including those who have visited the exhibit, the option to leave a testimonial of their personal experience as the caregiver and offers a tangible translation of the exhibition. The edited video will be presented formally on October 27th, 2017.

2 October 27th, 2017 B. The Speakers Giavana Jones, M.A., PhD Is Your Oxygen Mask On? Sacrifices vs. Gifts Dr. Jones is currently employed as the Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of the Bahamas. She completed the M.A. and Ph.D. in Applied Social Psychology from the University of Windsor. Prior to this, she completed a Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling from Palm Beach Atlantic University and undergraduate degree in Psychology from College of St. Benedict. Her research connects with her previous work and passions, which is grounded in resilience. She is interested in understanding both the individual characteristics as well as the social and community factors that contribute to success. Dr. Jones is a wife, mother of two, local coordinator for an out- of- school education support program, Timothy Education Program and a leader in her local church. Stephanie Hutcheson, M.A. PhD Spirituality and Survivorship Dr. Hutcheson is a Clinical Psychologist. She is also Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department at the University of the Bahamas in the Division of Social Sciences. Dr. Hutcheson received her academic training at Howard University in Washington, DC where she graduated with the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in She completed pre- doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships in psychology through the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. Her fellowships placement site was the Grady health System, a large urban hospital servicing the mental health needs of a diverse population. Dr. Hutcheson brings her experience as a mental health professional, caregiver and 21- year breast cancer survivor to this unique initiative. Mrs. Charlene McPhee, RN Taking care of the Caregiver 2

3 Nurse Charlene Laverne Diggiss- McPhee is a Certified Professional Medical Coder with over 40 years of nursing experience from Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau, Bahamas and South Western Medical Hospital in Dallas, Texas, Dr. Lunn s private clinical practice, Doctors Hospital, Spanish Wells and other Family Islands in the Bahamas. At present, Nurse McPhee is the Nurse Manager at the Surgical Suite in Nassau, Bahamas and is the Founding member of the Sister/Sister Breast Cancer Support Group. Nurse McPhee has seen the challenges facing caregivers for years firsthand, as it pertains to Breast Cancer. She is enthusiastic to offer her perspective from years of experience and share her knowledge, empowering others in this setting. Sylvie Boisclair - Sivananda Ashram Meditation: Benefits & Practice The Sivananda Ashram is a traditional yoga ashram with a mission to teach classical yoga. They learn from all traditions and actively promote Unity in Diversity through interfaith and inter- spiritual dialogue, including perspectives from science and the arts. During this brief workshop, you will learn about the many benefits of meditation and how to achieve them through simple techniques which can be added to your daily routine. You will be guided into breathing techniques, deep relaxation and light physical stretches that can be done in a chair. All these have the power to positively impact your mental focus and reduce your stress level. At the end of the session, you will have to opportunity to ask questions about meditation so you can continue at home. Take a first step towards attaining a calm, joy- filled mind. DeVonnia Bonimy- Lee, DPT, WCS, CLT Hostess Dr. Bonimy- Lee is a Physiotherapist/ Physical Therapist, Certified Lymphedema Therapist and Women s Health Clinical Specialist. Her work and credentials include assisting those with abdominal and pelvic dysfunction, recovery from Breast Cancer treatment and management of Lymphedema. Dr. Bonimy- Lee received her academic and clinical training for the Doctorate of Physical Therapy at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey in Following matriculation, she worked as a licensed P.T. at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and NYU Langone Medical Center / 3

4 RUSK Institute in pelvic health and breast cancer rehabilitation. Her experience in the Oncology setting as a Physical Therapist became the foundation for the genuine compassion for patients and caregivers living with the long term effects of cancer treatment. This is her incentive for this educational and mutualistic experience.
