2 Diabetes School Care Plan Review and Conference August 3, 2018 University of Tennessee Student Alumni Center 800 Madison Avenue Memphis, Tennessee COURSE DESCRIPTION This education program has been designed to equip participants with current safe diabetes management practices in the school setting and expand skill sets utilizing new diabetes technologies. All speakers will address relevant issues and provide valuable information and insight into situations commonly presented both clinically and in practice during the academic school year. TARGET AUDIENCE This course is designed for school personnel/administrators, nurses, school food service personnel, parents of children with diabetes, social workers, and other health care professionals interested in updating their knowledge on safe care practices and treatment of children with diabetes. OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: discuss and demonstrate carbohydrate counting. list ways a medical/legal partnership may benefit a patient or family. list when to call the parents and or clinic when the parameters of the school care plan are out of range. define glucagon and give a return demonstration of the proper use of the glucagon emergency kit. demonstrate the administration of insulin via pen or vial and syringe method. demonstrate the steps for ketone management. give accurate carbohydrate count for an example of food. identify the basic components of insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors (CGMs). discuss how health literacy relates to medical treatment within pediatric diabetes patients. incorporate exercise as medicine in children with type 2 diabetes. describe laws in place for the rights and safety of the child. distinguish their role in the management of diabetes in the school setting. define asthma and how chronic disease affects the school-aged child. discover strategies to reduce pediatric obesity.

TUITION The fee is $15 for school personnel/administrators, nurses, school food service personnel, parents of children with diabetes, social workers, and other health care professionals. For group registration: Each member of the group must complete the program registration form individually. A total registration fee for the group must be submitted at the same time of the grouped registration form submissions. The registration fee includes contact hours, breakfast, and lunch. No refunds will be given. Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare reserves the right to alter, reschedule, or cancel this program should circumstances so dictate.
