We are looking forward to honoring our past, empowering you in your profession, and providing education for your future! The committee has worked hard to produce a great conference. The conference offers something useful for every setting in many content areas. We also offer concurrent sessions to allow you to tailor the conference experience to your liking. We have some great opportunities that will be available this year, including cardiac and respiratory assessment simulators, a poster show, a sponsored dinner, and many great presentations. We are excited to be holding this conference at the Doubletree by Hilton in Syracuse, NY. We will have a table with information in the lobby at check-in from Visit Syracuse. 3 34th Annual Conference 33rd Annual NYS ID/DD Nurses Association September Conference Honoring the past, Empowering the present, Educating 25-27,2016 the future SPEAKERS Becky Eisenhut, MS, RN, CASAC, CARN Ms. Eisenhut is the Outreach Coordinator for the Statewide Peer Assistance for Nurses (SPAN). She has extensive experience in the nursing specialty of addictions, has been published multiple times in the Journal of Addictions Nursing, and is a strong advocate for self-care of nurses. Patricia Knapp, MSN, RN Ms. Knapp is the Hospital Development Liaison for Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network. She holds a masters degree in nursing from St. John Fisher College. The Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network has experience working with people living in OPWDD residential settings who have donated organs. Steven Fogelman, MD Dr. Fogelman is currently a psychiatrist with OPWDD, with over 15 years experience in this setting. His undergraduate work was at the University of Pennsylvania and he earned his MD at the Sackler School of Medicine. Dr. Fogelman s did his psychiatric training at the New England Medical Center in Boston and then he completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Department of Pharmacology at Tufts University Medical School. Brenda Forrest, MS RN FNP CNS Ms. Forrest is currently a Professor of Nursing at Cayuga Community College. Brenda holds a masters degree in nursing and is both a clinical nurse specialist and family nurse practitioner. She has over 35 years of medical-surgical, ICU, and ED nursing experience. Saindyse Germain Ms. Gerrnain has 17 years of nursing experience in med-surg, psychiatric corrections, long term care, and developmental disabilities nursing. She is currently Executive Director of Nursing at a senior living facility. Saindyse holds a Masters in Nursing from Western Governor s University. Kathleen Keating, RN, MSN, CNP-PC Kathleen Keating, served in various capacities in the New York State Office for Persons with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) for 29 years, the last 11 as the Director of Nursing and Health Services. Ms. Keating was responsible for negotiating with the State Board for Nursing to define critical elements in the provision of nursing services to individuals receiving community-based residential services in facilities operated and/or certified by OPWDD. One of those elements was the development and implementation of the concept of Plans of Nursing Service (PONS). Ms. Keating has many years of experience in writing PONS and educating UAPs on their contents. For the last 5 years she has been involved in the review of the adequacy/ content of PONS as part of investigations into allegations of neglect/abuse/malpractice and as part of the mortality review process Sherry Neal Ms. Neal has been an RN for 42 years, spending the last 24 years of her career predominately in managing services for persons with I/DD and/or aging in the community and in large and small ICF/DD and SNF settings. Sherry has spent much time providing hands on direct nursing care and services, as well as coaching and training other nurses, both RN and LPN, as well as Direct Support Professionals, on how to provide appropriate services for persons with I/DD and how to recognize medical risks, concerns and emergencies. She is a popular speaker at many national, regional and state conferences on multiple topics related to I/DD and to aging with I/DD. Anne C. Payette, MSN, RN, FNP-BC, CDDN Anne Payette has been a CDDN since 2002 and has experience with the ID/DD nursing specialty throughout the lifespan, including infant and newborn screening, early intervention services, day program residential services, supportive apartments, homes for the medically frail of all ages, as well as ID/DD staff training and development, Employee Health and Quality Improvement. Anne presents at various state and national conferences on topics pertaining to ID/DD nursing, including pain assessment and management, case coordination and planning, promoting a team approach to supporting the individual with complex needs, and end of life care and planning. She is currently practicing as a Family Nurse Practitioner at Nathan Littauer Primary Care, with a passion for advancing the field of ID/DD nursing as a recognized specialty field. Susan B. Prendergast, BS, RN Ms. Prendergast is the current OPWDD Director of Nursing and Health Services. Formerly, she was Director of a Licensed Home Care Agency, responsible for all clinical and administrative activities within the agency, including included oversight of two large waiver programs and a Consumer Directed Program HANDOUTS ARE ELECTRONIC! 4 34th Annual Conference 33rd Annual NYS ID/DD Nurses Association September Conference Honoring the past, Empowering the present, Educating the future SPEAKERS Hilary Ruffing Ms. Ruffling has been in the field supporting adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities for the last 6 years. She began her career working as a DSP and then as a House Manager, Residential Manager, and a Case Manager/QIDP. Hilary has been responsible for planning transitions as well as dealing with the aftermath of unsuccessful or poorly planned transitions. Her unique perspective, combined with Sherry s, allows them to coach others on how to plan for, provide, and problem-solve transitions from all angles. Dr. Susan Scharoun, PhD Dr. Scharoun has a Ph.D. in Psychology from Syracuse University. After graduating from S.U., she received a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) post-doctoral fellowship to do brain research in the Department of Anatomy and Center for Brain Research at the University of Rochester Medical School. Dr. Scharoun was employed by NYS Office of People with a Developmental Disability as an Associate Psychologist and Treatment Team Leader for seventeen years before becoming a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Le Moyne College, where she was the chair of the department for over a decade. Her research interests include autism and addressing challenging behaviors with positive behavioral support. Dr. Scharoun has taught courses such as Brain and Behavior, Childhood Disorders, Human Lifespan Development, Motivation and Emotion, Personality Theory, The Psychology of Disabilities and Health Psychology. She is a consultant psychologist for several not-forprofit agencies that serve children and adults with developmental disabilities. Dr. Scharoun is on the Board of Directors of ARC of Onondaga and is the co-author of the e-publication of Dual Diagnosis, A Caregiver s Guide. Edie Smith, MSN, RN, Ms. Smith is an Assistant Professor of Nursing and Program Coordinator at Cayuga Community College. Her curriculum includes use of high fidelity lab and web-based virtual simulations. She has extensive experience in ID/DD Nursing and currently sits on the Board of Directors for Arc of Seneca Cayuga. She is President-Elect of the NYS ID/DD Nurses Association. Edie presented Improving nurses attitudes towards the intellectually and developmentally disabled patient population, at the NLN & Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society National Education Research Conference, and the abstract was published in the Virginia Henderson Global Nursing Library e-repository. Edie has also implemented curriculum regarding the ID/DD patient into Cayuga College s program. Dr. Jeanine Santelli Dr. Jeanine Santelli, RN, AGPCNP-BC, FAAN, a Keuka College alumnae, is the executive director of The American Nurses Association New York (ANA-NY). Dr. Santelli has earned degrees in nursing from Keuka College, Syracuse University and Widener University. She has most recently served as chair of nursing at Nazareth College and has also served as executive director of the Genetic Nurses Credentialing Commission. Dr. Santelli is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing; a member of Omicron, Upsilon Upsilon, and Pi Psi chapters of Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society; a Margretta Madden Styles Credentialing Scholar; the 2007 recipient of the Keuka College Alumni Association's Professional Achievement Award; and the 2011 recipient of the International Society of Nurses in Genetics Founders Award for Service. Jennifer Warren, RPh, CGP Ms. Warren graduated from Albany College of Pharmacy and has worked in long term care consulting for Health Direct Pharmacy Services throughout her career. Jennifer achieved her Certified Geriatric Pharmacist in Special interests are Alzheimer's Disease & Antibiotic Stewardship and she has been a speaker on both topics. Jennifer has two wonderful daughters that keep her very busy. Frederick Wetzel, PhD, RN Dr. Wetzel is the former Downstate Director of the New York State OPWDD, Division of Quality Improvement/Bureau of Program Certification. His career with OPWDD spanned 31 years, during which he held positions as Case Manager, Technical Assistant, Surveyor, Regional Director, and Director of Clinical Review. He chaired the DQI Health Care Committee and the Statewide Committee on Incidents. Fred now provides consulting services to various agencies providing supports and services to individuals with Intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as Attorneys and Advocates. Thank you to Cayuga Community College School of Health Sciences for their in-kind contributions to the annual conference by providing simulation equipment.

This presentation will expand on the baseline knowledge, teach advanced assessment skills, and provide the RN the opportunity for hands-on practice of skills using a simulation medium-fidelity mannequin. 1:45 3:00 pm Afternoon Session Session S2: Gurgles, Wheezes, and Respiratory Diseases: A Case Review Approach to Identifying and Managing Common Respiratory Conditions in ID/DD Anne Payette Attendees will hear about current practice recommendations and trends for the treatment of respiratory diseases. Tips and tools to assist nurses in educating direct support staff will also be provided. 3:30 4:45 pm President s Welcome and Opening Session Darlene Langkau, RN, President Session S3: What s Going on Out There in Professional Nursing Practice in NYS?: Dr. Jeanine Santelli Dr. Santelli, Executive Director of ANA-NY, will discuss current issues in professional nursing practice in NYS, including e-compact, RVN, and BSN in 10. Parts 1 and 2 Dr. Susan Scharoun Back by popular demand from last year s conference evaluations, Dr. Scharoun will extensively discuss this topic in a double session. Sessions M2 and M4: Dementia and the ID/DD Parts 1 and 2 Dr. Fred Wetzel I/DD facilities are experiencing greater numbers of Individuals developing dementia. Many nurses have limited experience in dementia recognition or treatment and are especially looking for help in training unlicensed assistive staff in providing care and supports to individuals with dementia. Ms. Warren will also share evolving antibiograms and steps to take moving forward, including policies and procedures to implement. Session T2: Organ Donation Education for ID/DD Service Providers Patricia Knapp This presentation is expected to empower and educate ID/DD service providers with a basic understanding of the organ donation process that can be referred to when they have an individual with organ donation potential. Session T4: Diabetes Update-Improving Compliance Dr. Fred Wetzel Dr. Wetzel uses his insight from a career of providing/ monitoring care of people with ID/DD and diabetes mellitus to discuss strategies to improve compliance. 12:30-1:30 pm: Lunch 1:45 3:15 pm: General Session Session T5: Delegation in OPWDD Certified Sites Kathleen Keating A must-attend for nurses new to OPWDD and a great review for all of us. In order to prevent burnout and compassion fatigue we as nurses need to become more self-aware and prioritize our self-care to facilitate better care for our patients.
