On the academic side, this is the end of the year and I want to extend my most sincere congratulations to our PGY5 s who have successfully graduated: Mike Di Ianni, Dorota Linda, Nicoleta Anca, Michelle Walker and Brian Stewart. Well done and now for some well deserved rest. A great welcome to our new staff, joining us on July 1 st : Dr. Luciana Ribeiro, whom you all know, bringing us her expertise in neuroradiology, adult and paediatrics. She will share her life between the General and MUMC sites. Dr. Nina Stein, who comes to us from Sick Kids with a dual fellowship in paediatric neuroradiology and general paediatric radiology. Dr. Stein is a long awaited addition to our Children s Hospital. Farewell to Dr. Michael Anderson, who leaves the General to pursue a body fellowship at St Michael s in Toronto. We wish him all the best. We have seen a lot of changes this year on the hospital side, with the implementation of ABC, and all the apprehension it has created. Now two months later, we have noted the anticipated shift in activity from MUMC to the JH&CC, and a much busier emergency. Our paediatric emergency room is also becoming busier as our Children s Hospital at MUMC is getting known as the regional centre of reference. We also went through a successful Accreditation at HHS where the surveyors assessed the hospital's performance relative to 2,547 specific standards. Of which, we had a success rate of 98 per cent. Specific successes included our ability to complete ambitious capital development projects, such as our new Juravinski Hospital, while continuing to provide patient care services as usual. As well, our J U N E amalgamation with St. Peter's Hospital, the implementation of Access to Best Care, and everyone's commitment to working together to do what's best for our patients. A few challenges they identified, beside the need for more regular performance appraisal for our staff, was the unacceptable use of abbreviations. This is really relevant to us, as we do not count the number of illegible requisitions, and the mysterious abbreviations that we have to deal with every day. I have hope that this will boost our efforts to improve this situation, and speed up the implementation of a badly needed electronic order entry system. Stay tuned. Have a very happy summer! Dr. David Koff Chief of Diagnostic Imaging, HHS Chair, Dept. of Radiology, FHS 1 1

2 Message from David Wormald Our mission is to deliver excellence in patient care, research and education today, while defining the landscape of tomorrow. 9 TRIBUTE - Dr. Robert J. Tuttle Dr. Robert J. Tuttle came to St. Joseph s Hospital in Hamilton in 1966 and served as the Chief of Radiology for over 20 years. He was a clinical professor at the School of Medicine at McMaster University and a president of the Hamilton Academy of Medicine. Dr. Tuttle retired in Prior to coming to St. Joe s, Dr. Tuttle graduated from the University of Western Ontario Medical School in 1956, and completed his residency at Harvard Medical School. In April of this year, our beloved Dr. Tuttle passed away. A celebration of his life was held on April 23 rd where family, friends, and colleagues gathered to pay respect and tell many a story of Dr. T. Here is just one of those stories. Many years ago when smoking was permitted within the hospital, Dr. Tuttle was known for his cigarsmoking habit. This facilitated location of the good doctor. Overhead paging was not required we simply followed the scent of tobacco and there he was! He was the venipuncture go to guy. No one could locate and inject a vein, artery or lymphatic vessel faster than Dr. T. When requested for an injection, he would lay his cigar on the nearest table edge, go into the imaging room, inject the vessel, and seconds later return to the cigar, still burning. On one occasion when he laid his cigar on the desk, one of our technologists, not realizing it was there, leaned over the desk to reach an item and his cigar burned right through the front of her (maternity) uniform! Needless to say, Dr. T. was mortified, apologetic and took full responsibility for the faux pas, that has become one of our many endearing Dr. Tuttle stories. On a more profound note, you could not find a leader more passionate and supportive of the patients, the staff or the Radiology profession. He always did the right thing with respect to all of the above. The patients had an advocate in Dr. T. He had the experience and confidence to cancel any inappropriate radiology request that would not positively affect the clinical outcome. If the examination had the potential to diminish the quality of care provided, or the dignity of the patient, it was cancelled. His radiology reports were succinct and conclusive, thereby expediting appropriate patient management. His support for the radiology staff was unconditional. If a member of the team felt challenged in any way, Dr. T. managed the situation directly and diplomatically to ensure each member of his team was respected and valued for their contributions to the organization. He made a point to know all hospital staff by name, and his gregarious demeanor meant he was an ambassador for the radiology department. He was an exemplary educator who created teachable moments every day, for all members of the health care team. Dr. T. encouraged life long learning and persuaded others to continue to expand their knowledge, skill and expertise throughout their professional journey. As the role of the technologist expands today, I regret that he will not be here to champion these initiatives, cheer us on and encourage us to seek growth and excellence within our profession. 11 faux pas Summer Solstice (The longest day of the year) In the Northern Hemisphere, summer solstice begins on June 21 st 2011 at 1:16 P.M. EDT. Sol + stice derives from a combination of Latin words meaning "sun" + "to stand still." As the days lengthen, the sun rises higher and higher until it seems to stand still in the sky. As a major celestial event, the Summer Solstice results in the longest day (increased solar radiation and thus warmth), and the shortest night of the year. The Northern Hemisphere celebrates in June, but the people on the Southern half of the earth have their longest summer day in December. The first of the baby boomers will be turning 65 this year The number of Ontarians aged 65 and over will double in the next 20 years from 1.7 million to 3.6 million There are several activities taking place at HHSC and Senior Centres throughout the city to recognize the contributions made by seniors and to reflect on the work that caregivers like you do every day to make their lives better. Summertime Question: What is another name for flip flops? Answer: Jandals, not sandals. Inspired by the traditional woven soled zori or Japanese sandals, hence Jandals. Thank you to all of our readers and contributors. Wishing you a very happy and safe summer! See you in September!
