Summary Statement OSA s 76th Annual Meeting is a celebration of excellence in patient care, education and advocacy. Experts will present and discuss a variety of topics from managing clinical challenges and controversies to discussing topics relevant to practice management. These topics will emphasize practical approaches that are appropriate for an anesthesiologist in both private practice as well as academic practice. Target Audience The educational program will provide pertinent information to anesthesiologists that practice in Ohio. This would include anesthesiologists practicing in tertiary care non-university hospitals, urban, suburban and rural community hospitals, outpatient surgical centers, office-based practices and university teaching hospitals. The content of this program is also applicable to residents and fellows in anesthesiology as well as anesthesiologists assistants. Accreditation Statement This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the Ohio Society of Anesthesiologists. The American Society of Anesthesiologists is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The American Society of Anesthesiologists designates this live activity for a maximum of AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. 3 Conference Objectives At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to: 1. Summarize patient specific and surgical specific risk factors for hemorrhage in the peri-partum patient. 2. Identify at risk pediatric patients for obstructive sleep apnea and summarize the risks associated with anesthetizing patients for routine surgical procedures. 3. Summarize the ongoing legislative efforts in Ohio and guidelines employed to regulate opioid prescriptive practices. 4. Explain the pathophysiology behind severe sepsis and basic directed therapies. 5. Summarize the history and development of mechanical circulatory support. 6. Summarize the pathophysiology behind COPD and its correlation with pulmonary hypertension. 7. Interpret the results of different studies linking anesthetic exposure in the pediatric population with neurocognitive effects. 8. Recognize the pathophysiological principles associated with fluid resuscitation with respect to individual patient characteristics. 9. Recognize and appropriately evaluate a patient suspected of chronic opioid abuse and/or current illegal drug use and the impact on anesthetic care. 10. Identify environmental concerns related to volatile anesthetics and discuss ways to minimize the environmental impact of anesthetic practice. 11. Describe the basics of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and how it is being utilized in the critical care setting. 12. Critically compare UGRA to other forms of nerve localization and assess effectiveness in enhancing patient safety. 13. Recognize patients at risk for requiring peri-operative transfusion. 14. Distinguish between moderate sedation vs. deep sedation vs. MAC vs. general anesthetic techniques for GI procedures. 15.
