CEOMessage 1 Hong Kong society is fast-moving and forever changing. With more people from the city working across the border in the Mainland, they are used to a high standard of care provided by healthcare professionals in Hong Kong. In May this year, Adventist Health Hong Kong (AHHK) announced a strategic alliance with the Chiho Medical Centre in China, which is the first clinic in Shenzhen fully owned and run by physicians registered in Hong Kong providing medical services to a large number of Hong Kong people and expatriates working in China. AH JUL/AUG 2012 This new alliance enables us to extend our operational reach in Shenzhen and provides our hospitals with a chance to offer our best-in-class services to a greater number of people. It is both a challenge and opportunity which we embrace wholeheartedly. AHHK has always placed great importance on charity work. Beginning in April, the Cardiac Catheterization and Interventional Centre in Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospital has been providing a range of interventional procedures free of charge to qualified patients referred from Yan Chai Hospital who are facing financial difficulties. For other cardiac patients referred from Yan Chai Hospital, a substantial discount will be offered. At the same time, we have launched a series of health education programs in the community focusing on disease prevention and the principles of healthy living. Good nutrition, the benefits of physical exercise, stress management, weight control, and the importance of trusting relationships, are just a few of the sought-after programs we have been offering. Currently, our community health awareness initiatives on chronic illnesses and heart disease are two of our biggest to date. By joining forces with the public sector, we are introducing our services to a wider segment of the population. In June, our hospitals were visited by representatives of the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) for a periodic review following our accreditation in I am pleased to report that we continue to be accredited and would like to express my thanks to all of you for your cooperation and contribution to the review. The ACHS and our other international accreditations underscore your hard work and our determination to always pursue excellence in our mission to provide high quality medical care. The healthcare industry of today can change dramatically overnight. Taking a long-term perspective, Adventist Health Hong Kong looks at challenges as opportunities. As we strive to make the most of opportunities, we are also aware that to be a leader in our fields, embracing the capabilities of new technology and exploiting everything it has to offer for the benefit of our patients, we cannot lose sight of the basics which are the foundation of compassionate quality care. Yours truly, Frank Yeung President/CEO Hong Kong and Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospitals

2 HospitalNews JUL/AUG 2012 AH First in Hong Kong Adventist Hospitals Join WHO s Health Promoting Network (From left to right) Mr Alan Siu, Manager of Lifestyle Management Center, Pr James Wu, VP-LSA, Dr Frank Yeung, President / CEO and Mr Aaron Liu, Director of The Lifestyle Management Center of Hong Kong and Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospitals. Dr Yeung, Mr Liu and Pr Wu met Mr Hui-Ting Huang, President of Taiwan Adventist Hospital (left 2), and Professor Hanne Tonnesen (middle), at the HPH Network s 20th international Conference on Health Promoting Hospitals and Health Services held in Taiwan. Our hospitals are the first in Hong Kong to become members of the World Health Organization s Health Promoting Hospitals Network (HPH). HPH aims to bring together hospitals that provide high quality comprehensive medical and nursing services, and also develop a corporate identity that embraces the aims of health promotion. As part of the application process, our hospitals demonstrated how they have developed a health promoting organizational structure and culture that includes active, participatory roles for patients and all members of staff. Health promotion is integrated into the way we carry out our duties from providing treatments to cure diseases to advancing healthy living practices within our communities and among patients and staff, in order to prevent illnesses. Three Adventist health promotion projects that illustrate how we facilitate health promotion are: NEWSTART, Corporate Wellness Program, and our community programs. * NEWSTART is a one-day program or live-in program for people who need to regain their physical health and quality of life. The term NEWSTART is an acronym for the eight principles of health: Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunlight, Temperance, Air (Fresh), Rest and Trust in God. It aims to help participants achieve physical and mental wellbeing through lifestyle changes. * Health and safety are vital in the workplace to protect and improve the health of employees. One successful and effective program is the staff weight management initiative which provides employees varied opportunities to engage in behavioral changes to improve and maintain good health. It emphasizes a lifestyle approach, including proper nutrition, productive exercise and positive motivation. It also aims to improve participants knowledge and to change their attitudes. * Our ongoing community programs in Wan Chai and Tsuen Wan districts help residents establish healthy lifestyles. We partner with the District Councils and other NGOs to deliver a wide range of health education events that promote a holistic health perspective for the communities. The role of health promotion in hospitals is changing. It is no longer restricted to only providing additional lifestylerelated information to patients after clinical procedures are completed. Health promotion is becoming an integral part of the healthcare process itself, and is related to clinical, educational, behavioral and organizational issues. Hospitals joining the international network aim to provide high quality comprehensive medical and nursing services by introducing health promotion activities for patients, staff and the community into their corporate identity and routine practice. To develop a HPH network in Hong Kong, our hospitals produce, accumulate and disseminate a great deal of knowledge aimed at having a positive impact on the local health structures and influencing professional practice elsewhere.

4 HospitalNews JUL/AUG 2012 AH & TWAH New Partnership in Cardiac Care Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospital (TWAH) has signed an agreement with Yan Chai Hospital Board to provide a range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for cardiac patients living in western Kowloon and the New Territories. The agreement, signed on 16 April, 2012, further enhances TWAH s public and private-sector partnerships in the provision of healthcare and promoting cardiac healthcare in the community. 7 HospitalNews 5 Stepping Out to Raise Funds and Awareness Over 500 community leaders and Hong Kong residents put their best feet forward for a seven-mile walkathon to raise money for the Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospital s new extension building. The Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospital Extension Charity Walkathon on 18 March, 2012, began at Tsuen Wan Park and followed a route to Sai Tai Park, Sham Tseng. As well as raising funds for the new extension, the event was also aimed at raising awareness of the limited medical support in the communities of West New Territories. JUL/AUG 2012 TWAH The new hospital building will enhance the partnership between public and private healthcare in Tsuen Wan, boosting the quantity of hospital beds and medical specialties available. Group photo at the starting line. Bedside Care Gets Mobile Update Patients medical records can now be accessed from the patient s bedside at Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospital. Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospital rolled out Mobile Clinical Solution, a wireless system enabling remote access to a patient s clinical information via a handheld device. The platform upgrade to the existing electronic patient record system will help to reduce human error and enhance patient safety. All admissions are now assigned a new wrist-tag with a 2D barcode. Staff can check the patient s personal particulars by scanning the barcode with the handheld device. It is also possible to display a photo of the patient. To log onto the system, operators need to scan the barcode on their staff identity card. They will only be allowed to access information which they are authorized according to their specific role in the delivery of care. profile can be administered remotely as well as locally by the system with the information updated real time. Clinical Laboratories has also started using Mobile Clinical Solution to ensure specimens collected are assigned to the right patient. In Phase 2, the system will be deployed to enhance safety in blood transfusions. Since all data is stored on a dedicated server, patients confidentiality will not be compromised in the event that one of the handheld mobile devices is damaged or stolen. The system also helps improve patient safety in dispensing medications by minimizing the chance of human errors brought about by problems with transcription, misidentification and omission. The patient s medication

MedicalNews 9 Bunion Breakthrough 1,000 and counting Hong Kong Adventist Hospital (HKAH) is pleased that Dr Daniel Wu, specialist in Orthopaedic, has performed more than 1,000 of his non-bonebreaking bunion surgery at our hospital. Over 50 of these surgeries were on patients from across the world, including Australia, Canada, China, Dubai, Japan, Indonesia, New Zealand, Singapore, Netherlands, Italy, the UK and USA, who came specifically for the procedure. JUL/AUG 2012 HKAH Congratulations to Dr Wu on his pioneering work and best wishes for his further success. Figure skater s career restored In 2011, the Biomedical Science Department of The Polytechnic University of Hong Kong verified that Dr Wu s non-bone-breaking bunion surgery can not only correct bunion deformity but also significantly and consistently improve the all important mechanical functions of patients feet. Researchers at the university used the F-Scan to study the pre- and one-year post-operative plantar pressure of 34 consecutive patients who had both their feet corrected. Dr Wu presented this study at the Hong Kong Orthopaedic Association Annual Congress in December, 2011 and American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons annual meeting in San Francisco in February, The study is also being prepared for scientific publication to demonstrate that a bunion surgery can finally restore mechanical function of the big toe the biggest contributor (80%) of all the toes in walking and a major victim of the bunion condition. An unexpected new outlook in life Yes, I could have danced all night until the Twelfth of Never writes Dr Wu s patient in a thank you note. Before and after non-bone-breaking surgery

10 MedicalNews HKAH TomoTherapy is Coming to HKAH A New Integrated Way to Deliver Radiation Treatments for Cancer JUL/AUG 2012 by Mr Charlie CHAN Chief Medical Physicist Hong Kong Adventist Hospital has successfully installed the TomoTherapy equipment and is now commissioning the system and plans a clinical deployment after mid-august. A small, well trained and experienced team comprising multidisciplinary staff members is ready to serve our patients. A Fresh Approach, New Design TomoTherapy is the state-of-theart radiotherapy technology for treating cancer patients. It is the only radiotherapy equipment that delivers radiation to the tumour site in a helical way, with the patient moving inside the bore of the equipment while radiation is delivered in 360-degree rotations. The unique image-guided and intensity-modulated radiation therapy can be tailored to individual patient s needs, allowing for the treatment of small to very large tumours, and multiple tumours at one go with high precision. The anticipated outcome is better coverage of the tumour with higher radiation doses and better dose homogeneity inside the tumour, while minimizing exposure to the surrounding healthy tissues. Fewer complications due to radiation treatment are expected because there is less damage to the surrounding normal structures and tissues compared with conventional linear accelerators. The benefits of TomoTherapy for cancer patients are better clinical outcomes, less suffering and side effects from the treatment. Radiation treatment cannot be reversed after it has been administered; once sufficient radiation has passed through the normal structures and tissues, the damage is there. If the treatment is not precise, the damage will burn into the patient s body, causing overdose to the critical structures and organs, and underdose to the tumour, sparing the cancer cells. Overdose to normal tissues and organs would cause damage, or even severe damage, and may have devastating effect. Underdosing the tumour would result in inadequate treatment of the disease and might even bring about tumour recurrence. Overdose and underdose are things that we must never do in radiation therapy. That is why precision is so important. The advanced technology of the TomoTherapy platform integrates true computed tomography (CT) imaging of the tumour and surrounding area to confirm the location of the tumour before each radiation treatment. Precise treatment is possible with this new technology reducing unnecessary damage to normal tissues and organs while treating the tumour accurately and precisely. Hong Kong Adventist Oncology Center will begin treating patients after mid-september. Cancer treatment is a complex process which requires a multidisciplinary oncology team, consisting of surgeons, physicians, oncologists and interventional radiologists, to formulate personalized management plans ranging from surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, target therapy to supportive and palliative care and pain control. Working together we will be moving to the forefront of the battle against cancer.

LifestyleManagementCenter 11 JUL/AUG 2012 AH Forgive To Live Research has shown that learning to forgive can be an effective clinical intervention for hypertensive patients with elevated levels of anger. Dr Dick Tibbits carried out research to determine if patients diagnosed with stage-1 hypertension could achieve a reduction in anger expression and blood pressure by taking part in a forgiveness training program. Thirty-five participants were randomly divided into waitlisted control and intervention groups. The control group had their blood pressure monitored while the intervention group participated in an eight-week forgiveness training program. Those receiving forgiveness training showed significant reductions in anger expression when compared to the control group. The results indicated that forgiveness heals hurt rather than hiding it (Tibbits & Halliday, 2008). Ten Principles of Forgiveness Forgiveness begins when you Accept that life is not fair and that others may play by a different set of rules than you do. Stop blaming others for your circumstances. Understand that you cannot change the person who hurt you; you can only change yourself. Acknowledge the anger and hurt that some unpleasant or even harmful event is causing you. Reframe your story of hurt your grievance story by placing the hurtful events in a broader context than your current point of view. Recognize that only you can make the choice to forgive. Shift your view of the offender by humbly choosing to empathize with his or her life situation. Intentionally move from discontent toward content. Understand that forgiveness will take time and cannot be rushed. Take responsibility for your life and your future. FOR ENQUIRIES HKAH (852) FOR ENQUIRIES TWAH (852)
