1 JOB DESCRIPTION FOR THE POST OF Rotational Band 5 Physiotherapist AT BLACKPOOL TEACHING HOSPITALS NHS FOUNDATION TRUST JOB TITLE: Rotational Physiotherapist BAND: Band 5 RESPONSIBLE TO: Hospital Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Manager ACCOUNTABLE TO: Hospital Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Manager LOCATION: Blackpool Victoria Hospital and Clifton Hospital JOB SUMMARY: Band 5 Physiotherapist will play a key role in the provision of high quality physiotherapy services. The employee will be guided and supported by senior and clinically specialised staff. Clinical areas include: Medicals, Surgery, Intensive care and HDU, Orthopaedic In-patients, MSK Out-patients, Cardiothoracics, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Neurology, Clifton Rehabilitation Unit. Job Statement To perform physiotherapeutic assessment and treatment of patients with diverse presentations, which will include complex physical and psychological condition. To develop and deliver patient centred care appropriate to patient requirements. To be responsible for patients directly under your care within the specific rotational area.
2 To work as a physiotherapist autonomously within the related MDT and to practice safely within CSP and HCPC standards of care. You will have supervision within the clinical rotation by the designated clinical lead which may involve an individual physiotherapist or collaboratively by a team of senior practitioners. As a Band 5 physiotherapist you will take part in rotational objectives and will be supported via the senior team members as required. To partake within clinical development of the team and to maintain individual development. Working hours will vary dependent upon the specific rotation due to 7 day working and long day working. This may involve working weekends and evenings. You will take an active role within the physiotherapy respiratory on-call service. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Clinical To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including the management of patients in your care. To undertake a comprehensive assessment of patients including those with diverse or complex presentations/multi pathologies; using advanced clinical reasoning skills and manual assessment techniques to provide a clinically reasoned working diagnosis of their condition. Formulate and deliver an individual physiotherapy treatment programme based on a sound knowledge of evidence based practice and treatment options using clinical assessment, reasoning skills and knowledge of treatment skills e.g. manual physiotherapy techniques, patient education, exercise classes, electrotherapy techniques and other alternative options. To take delegated responsibility from the senior physiotherapist for managing patients with particular conditions and be responsible for providing physiotherapy assessment and treatment plans for patients with these conditions within each rotation safely. Assess patient understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid informed consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment. Use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools and channels to communicate effectively with patients to progress rehabilitation and patient management. This will include patients who may have difficulties in communication, For example, patients may be dysphasic, depressed, deaf, blind, linguistic barriers or may be unable to accept diagnosis. Evaluate patient progress, reassess and alter treatment programmes if required. To be responsible for the safe and competent use of all equipment used. To manage clinical risks within own patient caseload and to work within trust, HPC & CSP guidelines. Participate on the emergency on call rota, undertake the assessment and treatment of acutely ill patients with respiratory problems. Where necessary give advice to medical and nursing staff and other members of the multi-disciplinary team regarding patients respiratory and chest functions/condition. To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with HCPC & Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) standards of practice. Represent physiotherapy service and / or individual patients at the multi-disciplinary team meetings, to ensure the delivery of a co-ordinated multidisciplinary service, and integrate
3 physiotherapy treatment into the treatment programme. This will include discussion of patient care, patient progress and involvement in discharge planning. Keep up to date with trust and departmental mandatory training. Maintain up to date continuous professional development. Professional To be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice through CPD activities, and maintain a portfolio which reflects personal development. Maintain and develop current knowledge of evidence based practice in each clinical area, developing knowledge of particular conditions and patient types. Undertake an evidence based project where appropriate. Participate in the staff appraisal scheme as an appraisee and be responsible for complying with your agreed personal development programmes to meet set knowledge and competencies. Undertake the measurement and evaluation of your work and current practices through the use of evidence based practice projects, audit and outcome measures supported by senior clinicians. Be an active member of the in-service training programmes and tutorials Be actively involved in professional clinical groups, such as CSP clinical interest groups and other professional development activities. Provide support guidance and training to physiotherapy assistants and students as guided. Organisational To be able to manage an individual caseload. Ensure that your own practice and that of staff under your supervision meet the required professional standards of physiotherapy practice. To be adaptable to changes within service delivery. Effort To comply with the Trust Manual Handling Policy and therapeutic handling guidance at all times. To deal sensitively with patients and take in consideration emotional and physical involvement and social needs in relation to the medical condition.
4 Work independently where necessary assessing and managing risk. The job involves frequent exposure to unpleasant working conditions on a daily basis e.g. bodily fluids including sputum, vomit, urine, faeces and lice and occasional exposure to verbal and physical aggression. ABOUT THE TRUST: Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is situated on the west coast of Lancashire, and offers a full range of district hospital services and community health services to a population of 1.6 million in Lancashire and South Cumbria. The Trust provides services to the 440,000 residents of Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre and North Lancashire, as well as specialist tertiary care for Cardiac and Haematology services across the wider region. We employ more than 6,500 staff, with a turnover in excess of 370m in 2014/2015 and have approximately 900 beds. Our main activities are: Cardiovascular care at our Cardiac centre. Accident and Emergency at Blackpool Teaching Hospital. Community Midwifery and Women and Children s Services. Clinical research with an 80-strong team of nurses and doctors. Community nursing and school nursing. Recovery and rehabilitation for a variety of conditions including brain injury, stroke and elderly care. Sexual health and family planning services. Wellbeing and lifestyle including mental health services, heart health campaigns, and smoking cessation services. End of life and palliative care. Between April and March we treated 100,662 day cases and inpatients (elective and non-elective), 329,257 outpatients and had 83,303 A & E attendances. The total number of community contacts was 1,228,494. The Trust houses a state of the art Simulation & Skills Facility that provides training for all grades of staff to improve the safety and quality of the service that we offer our patients. We run a portfolio of in-house courses that can be accessed by all staff to enhance their professional development needs. The training is supported by the use of modern equipment including part task trainers for such skills as venipuncture and full body manikins for the practice of emergency drills. CONFIDENTIALITY:
