Welcome to Papworth Hospital It is an incredibly exciting time to join Papworth Hospital. After almost 100 years in the village of Papworth Everard in Cambridgeshire, we are now preparing to move to a brand new, state-of-the-art new hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus in In the last 100 years, Papworth has built an incredible reputation as one of the leading cardiothoracic hospital s in Europe. We are famous for pioneering a series of firsts in heart and lung medicine from the UK s first successful heart transplant in 1979 to the world s first successful heart, lung and liver transplant in Today, Papworth Hospital carries out more major heart operations than any other hospital in the UK, currently totalling more than 2,500 per year. Our hospital includes the country s largest heart and lung transplant centre and the national centre for pulmonary endarterectomy. Papworth is also a national centre for a range of other specialist cardiothoracic services, and our survival rates and outcomes are among the best in the world. Papworth is also a wonderful place to work. Our patients often talk about feeling part of the Papworth family and it is true for our staff members, too. Across the hospital, we aim to create an environment where everyone feels valued and rewarded for the incredible work they do. Our move to New Papworth Hospital is the next chapter in our story. It is our chance to keep making history and continue pioneering new treatments that save lives across the world. Our new location on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus will also give us much greater opportunity to work with other research organisations and hospitals to bring new treatments to patients more quickly. We have big ambitions for New Papworth Hospital but we need your help to turn our vision into a reality. I hope you will find this brochure useful in outlining some of the fantastic opportunities we have for talented people who want to be part of our team. I look forward to working with you soon. With best wishes, Stephen Posey CEO, Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust 3
Our incredible past Celebrating 100 years of saving lives Papworth Hospital has a fascinating history, having been established as a tuberculosis colony by pioneering physician Sir Varrier-Jones in 1918, following his research at Cambridge University. Two purpose-built hospitals were opened in the 1930s - the Princess Hospital for Women and the Bernhard Baron Hospital both of which buildings are still in use today. The Papworth Village Settlement provided free medical care, but also offered patients and their families the opportunity for longterm rehabilitation with housing, community facilities and employment in the factories of Papworth Industries. As the number of tuberculosis cases in the UK declined from the 1940s onwards, Papworth developed new specialties in chest medicine. In 1958, a team of surgeons conducted open-heart surgery at Papworth for the first time, and just two years later carried out the first operation using a heart-lung bypass machine. From then on Papworth continued to pioneer a series of firsts in heart and lung medicine. In 1979, the hospital carried out the first successful heart transplant in the UK, followed by Europe s first successful heart-lung transplant five years later. In 1986, our incredible clinicians performed the world s first successful heart, lung and liver transplant. Today, our commitment to providing new, innovative treatments is as strong as ever. For example, in 2015, we increased heart transplantation in the hospital by 40 per cent following the successful implementation of a DCD heart transplantation programme, using funds raised by our hospital charity. Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD) heart transplantation, otherwise known as non-beating heart transplantation, allows us to re-start a donor heart five minutes after cardiac death, greatly increasing the number of organs that can be successfully donated to recipients. We now perform more of these procedures than any other hospital in the world.
New Papworth Hospital The next chapter in our story After 100 years in the village of Papworth Everard in Cambridgeshire, we are now preparing to move to a brand new, state-of-the-art hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. New Papworth Hospital will be the most advanced cardiothoracic hospital in Europe, offering the very best in medical treatment and care to our national patient base. The location of the new hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, alongside the existing Addenbrooke s Hospital, offers many benefits in terms of patient care. New Papworth Hospital will be built to the very highest international medical standards and will include 310 mostly single, en-suite bedrooms, one of the country s largest critical care departments and seven state-of-the-art operating theatres. Our new location alongside the Medical Research Council and University of Cambridge researchers will help us develop new research programmes and bring new treatment options to patients more quickly. We are currently raising funds to build a new Heart and Lung Research Institute, in partnership with Cambridge University, alongside the new hospital. The Institute would allow for a significant expansion of clinical research into heart and lung diseases, which remain some of the biggest threats to public health in the developed world. 5
Our areas of excellence Cardiac services Papworth Hospital is one of the world s leading centres for life-saving cardiac surgery and procedures. Papworth performs the most cardiac surgery cases in the UK with some of the world s best survival rates. It deals with all aspects of the diagnosis, management and treatment of heart conditions in adults. Cardiac Physiology The non-invasive diagnostics unit offers a wide range of investigations for patients with suspected cardiac problems in both the outpatient and inpatient setting. Cardiac physiologists are supported by consultant cardiologists in the provision and interpretation of the various tests. The range of diagnostic tests and imaging designed to assess the structure and function of the heart include: Electrocardiogram (ECG) (heart tracing) Ambulatory ECG monitoring-holter recorders 24-hour blood pressure monitoring Exercise Tolerance Test (ETT) Tilt Testing Transthoracic echocardiography Trans-oesophageal echocardiography Stress Echocardiograms Cardiac Computerised Tomography (Cardiac-CT) Cardiac Surgery Papworth Hospital is one of the UK s leading and largest specialist providers of cardiac surgery, including coronary artery bypass grafting and the UK s largest valve repair/replacement centre. All types of heart surgery in adults are available, and we perform more major heart operations than any other unit in the UK (around 2,400 per year). 6
Thoracic services Our thoracic services directorate provides care to patients with a wide range of acute and chronic chest conditions. This includes the interstitial lung disease service, the respiratory infection, inflammation and immunology service, and surgery for lung cancer. Papworth Hospital is: One of the largest providers of services in Europe devoted to the treatment of chronic lung infections Home to the Cystic Fibrosis Centre which has gained a national and international reputation for its contribution to research A recognised specialist centre for the diagnosis and treatment for patients with Interstitial Lung Disease The largest national centre for the provision of ventilator support and sleep medicine Theatres, Cath Labs and Critical Care Critical care Our Critical Care unit has a six-bed cardiac recovery unit and 27 critical care beds. We admit patients who require high dependency or intensive care and staff the beds accordingly. Intensive care patients are nursed one a one-to-one basis. Most of the patients who come to Critical Care have had planned major heart or lung surgery. All staff working within Critical Care undergo a comprehensive training programme to help equip them for nursing in this specialised field. 7
Our areas of excellence Theatres There are five operating theatres. Each theatre is equipped to carry out the full range of cardiac, thoracic transplant and emergencies operations. Three theatres have facilities for remote viewing of operations in the lecture theatre by visiting surgeons or staff from other hospitals. There is a fourbedded recovery area adjacent to the five theatres. Catheterisation Laboratories (Cath Labs) Our Cath Labs unit is made up of five angiography suites and a bronchoscopy suite. In the Cath Labs, we perform a variety of interventions including angioplasties, valvuloplasties, and stent placements, as well as the implantation of pacemakers and implantable cardiverter-defibrillators (ICDs). Transplant services Papworth is one of the country s main adult heart and lung transplant centres and has carried out over 1,200 heart transplant operations and 800 lung transplant operations since the UK s first successful heart transplant operation in Papworth Hospital is the only centre in the United Kingdom currently certified to implant the Total Artificial Heart (TAH) developed by Syncardia. Papworth Hospital employs more than 1,800 people across a wide range of staff groups, including doctors, nurses, cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, cardiac physiologists, thoracic surgeons, respiratory physicians, specialist cardiothoracic anaesthetists, intensive care specialists, radiologists, pathologists, dieticians, speech therapists, physiotherapists, pharmacists, clinical educators, infection control, and the administrative and clerical staff. Our services comprise: Histopathology and respiratory cytopathology Microbiology Specialist immunology laboratory Haematology, blood transfusion and biochemistry Mortuary Radiology Papworth Hospital s radiology service has a key role in the diagnosis of all cardiothoracic conditions. The service uses the UK s most advanced imaging technology. Facilities include CT and MRI scanners. The Radiology Department images over 50,000 patients each year. Radiology offers a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills or to hone your cardiothoracic skills, learning from experts in the cardiothoracic field with specialised training and support. 10
Occupational Therapy The occupational therapist s role is to assess patients prior to discharge to ensure that they will manage all aspects of daily living once home. This includes areas such as personal care, bathing/showering and domestic skills, as well as advice regarding wheelchair and other equipment needs. If necessary, home visits may be carried out, either prior to discharge or as a follow-up, to assess in more detail a person s abilities at home and what, if any, services or equipment is needed. Physiotherapy The physiotherapy teams offer a comprehensive package of assessment, treatment and education to all patients referred to us. Thorough assessment, discussion, explanation and consent precedes any physiotherapy intervention. Most patients referred to us require respiratory (lung) treatment, rehabilitation and/or education about exercise. Dietetics Dietitians provide advice on nutrition and diet for health and illness management. We aim to prevent and offer effective dietary treatment for nutrition-related conditions. We can help patients to understand why dietary changes are necessary and how patients can manage these changes within their lifestyle. Speech and Language Therapy Speech and Language Therapists carry out assessment, advice and rehabilitation with people who have either a difficulty with communication, or with eating and drinking. We support both the person with the difficulty and those around them, providing support and training.
