2 Message from the Foundation Leaders Dear Friends of the Sault Area Hospital Foundation, It is an exciting time in the world of philanthropy. As you read through our Annual Report, we hope that you the generous donors, volunteers and stakeholders of the Sault Area Hospital Foundation will see how essential your ongoing support has been through the year. Throughout our first year in the new hospital, we continued to invest in advanced healthcare by disbursing over $561,000 from the Annual Fund for education, equipment and informational technology needs and almost $2.9 million from the New Hospital Fund. Now that our new state-of-the-art hospital is built, we are looking towards building a foundation of excellence. The Foundation is looking to broaden its support and optimize its role in quality patient-centred health care delivery to the citizens of Sault Ste. Marie and area. The following strategic areas of focus have been identified: excellence in care, excellence in learning, excellence in collaboration and excellence in innovation. Our hospital requires leading-edge medical equipment and information technology in order to remain a leading healthcare provider, to provide top quality patient care and to recruit and retain highly qualified medical professionals. The generosity of our community has supported these efforts. In the future, we are looking towards investing in programs that assist with integration of care and supporting new innovative ideas in clinical care that will impact our patients. Your continued support of the Sault Area Hospital Foundation demonstrates your commitment to advancing healthcare at our hospital and in our community. We look forward to investing in developing our resources to provide our healthcare providers with the tools they need to continue to deliver quality care. Your gift to the Sault Area Hospital Foundation really does make a difference! We hope you will see first hand the impact of your generous donations on patients, family members, hospital professionals and the community. Thank you for supporting the Sault Area Hospital Foundation! Augusto (Gus) P. 3 The Impact of Giving Greetings from Ron Gagnon President & CEO, Sault Area Hospital This past year has truly been one to remember. What is so very special about it is that we have seen the fruition of many, many years of very hard work by numerous people at all levels of our organization from the Board of Directors right through to our front line staff. We completed our first year of operations in our new hospital, expanded services, improved our quality results and achieved a surplus from operations. Most importantly, we are putting in place the foundations to achieve our vision of best. This year, the Sault Area Hospital Foundation (SAHF) has once again been a key part of our success. After raising over $30 million for the new hospital, the SAHF continued to be successful in raising funds to support the important work of our staff and physicians. Thanks to you, our generous donors, we are better prepared than ever to seize the opportunities and overcome the challenges that lie ahead. In the coming years, your ongoing support will be vital in helping us to fulfill our promise of excellence by investing in our people, the tools they need to deliver excellence each day, and innovative services and delivery models to meet the needs of the communities we serve. I am extremely proud of our partnership with the Sault Area Hospital Foundation and what our organizations have accomplished together. We have dared to dream, have believed in our abilities and have applied our passion for healing and caring to make a positive difference in people s lives. On behalf of the entire hospital team, I would like to thank all of our donors for your generous and ongoing support. Your giving to the SAHF represents more than a donation; it represents a belief in what s possible, a trust in us and a commitment to a better future for our region. What is the Impact of Giving? The impact of giving is felt across many departments of the hospital. The Foundation supports the purchase of life-changing and life-saving equipment used in clinical care and surgical procedures, which helps the SAH enhance the quality of healthcare provided to all patients. Having new equipment at our hospital is crucial in attracting and retaining specialized healthcare professionals. They need the tools to deliver excellence. We are able to develop and support our staff and physicians, our greatest asset, in their work. Investing in our people is potentially one of the most significant ways we can use donations. Every day lives are transformed and our patients are nurtured back to health, made possible through donated funds. Philanthropy and donations have a life-giving impact on care. The SAHF is the only source of funding for medical equipment purchases for the hospital, upon which everyone in the community and area relies. 3 Sault Area Hospital Foundation ANNUAL REPORT 2011 ~ 2012

5 Stories from Our Donors In Honour The Sault Area Hospital Foundation s In Honour Program provides the opportunity to express your joy, gratitude or thanks by making a gift in honour of someone special such as, a physician, nurse, co-worker, teacher, etc. Our family has experienced first hand the effects of excellence in health care. Twenty years ago our father, Wilf Vaillancourt, received wonderful medical attention at the Sault Area Hospital. He always held his physicians Dr. D. Poitevin and Dr. S. Fratesi in high esteem and credited them along with hospital staff for allowing him to enjoy many years of quality life. In appreciation and with a strong sense of wanting to give back, he recently chose to make a donation to the Sault Area Hospital Foundation through the Grateful Patient program. It gave him great satisfaction to see his name and that of our late mother Hilda on the recognition plaque outside the surgical classroom on Level Three of our beautiful hospital. Wilfred passed away peacefully on June 6, Once again he was highly appreciative for the care and attention he received from Dr. N. Bowen and the hospital staff of Unit 3B and the Emergency department. ~ Kathy Palombi, daughter Dr. S. Fratesi and Wilf Vaillancourt It is not how much you do, but how much love you put in the doing ~ Mother Theresa In May 2006 our son nicknamed The Mighty Quinn was diagnosed with a rare disorder called PHACE Syndrome at four weeks of age. He was treated with weekly chemotherapy for just over a year. As part of his disorder, Quinn had a very large benign, but life and function threatening vascular tumour on his face and in his brain. Quinn s treatment at the Algoma District Cancer Centre was a true blessing for us as it enabled him to be treated as an outpatient in his hometown surrounded by his family. His treatment was successful and his compromised vision and threatened life were saved. Today his health is stable though the future with this disorder remains unknown. Quinn is a happy six year old little boy who is a stroke survivor and is overcoming many hurdles associated with a diagnosis of Autism he received at two years of age. On November 29th, 2010 Quinn s maternal grandfather Stefan Majerczak was diagnosed with stage four Glioblastoma Brain Cancer after showing a sudden memory loss. At the time we were awaiting the birth of his twin granddaughters. My dad s wish was to be able to meet his twin granddaughters but he sadly lost his battle with Cancer four months to the day of his diagnosis on March 29th, 2012 at the Sault Area Hospital. Twelve hours later we welcomed the arrival of our twin daughters (the first to be born at the new SAH). My dad never had a chance to hold them in his arms but we like to think that he was able to meet them before they were born, that they crossed paths, one leaving and two entering this world and that he helped guide them to us safely. In preparation to celebrate the twins first birthday we decided we wanted to honour the memory of our dad, papa and husband, and to celebrate the wonderful care given to our son Quinn, and father and husband Stefan. We decided to turn Lily and Lexie s first birthday party into a fundraiser for the Sault Area Hospital Foundation s Cancer Care Program. In lieu of gifts we asked instead that people donate. Losing a close family member just hours before the birth of our twins was difficult beyond words. We will be forever grateful for all the support we have received from many staff members of the SAH and the SAH Foundation through these two trying times in our lives. We especially thank them for the loving care they provided for Quinn, the respect and dignity they showed my dad through his diagnosis and last days and for celebrating the birth of our twins with us and helping us to get through a very difficult but joyous 12 hours. The Circle of Life continues. Quinn with grandfather, Stefan Majerczak Lily and Lexie Duncan with grandmother, Rochelle Majerczak With much thanks: Jen, Tom, Tyler, Ryan, Quinn, Lily and Lexie Duncan and Rochelle, Jeff and Joey Majerczak 5 Sault Area Hospital Foundation ANNUAL REPORT 2011 ~ 2012

6 The Power of Philanthropy In 2008, both of my parents passed away. That same year I underwent parathyroid surgery at the Sault Area Hospital to correct a problem that had resulted in my passing a number of kidney stones. In 2009, I chose the Sault Area Hospital Foundation as my local charity by making a donation under the Tribute Gift Program in memory of my parents Marion and Charles Harris who lived in Guelph. I made that donation because my mom had been a nurse and my dad had volunteered to drive cancer patients to Hamilton. Anne Harris Today, I support the purchase of state of the art equipment for our new hospital as a monthly donor. I do this in appreciation for people like my parents, who work and volunteer in our community health care services. ~ Anne Harris, Monthly Donor Sault Area Hospital Foundation ANNUAL REPORT 2011 ~ 2012 Friends Forever Monthly Giving The Friends Forever Monthly Donor Program began in late This very special group of donors has made a tremendous impact; last year, our monthly donors provided over $47, 000 to purchase necessary medical equipment. Gifts made through the Friends Forever Monthly Donor Program are made automatically every month by either credit card or directly from your bank account. Gifts can also be directed to the hospital s highest area of need through the Fund for Better Care or one of our other designated funds. Just as joining the Board of Directors of the Sault Area Hospital was an easy decision for me to make a decade ago, so was my decision to become a Legacy Donor. At some point of our lives, each one of us in this great community in which we live and work will need the services of our hospital and will be treated by the caring compassionate group of physicians, staff and volunteers who comprise SAH. I do not know of any other organization that touches so many lives. In my time at SAH I have met many of the dedicated professionals who each day make miracles happen within our walls and I am constantly amazed and impressed by all that has been accomplished by this great team working together. By providing financial support to the Foundation we can ensure that our beautiful new hospital continues to be state of the art, and that the equipment that our professionals require to provide excellent patient care continues to be available. The need for equipment will never be over and as we continue to attract more specialists to our community the list will grow. Becoming a member of the Legacy Society supports my belief in the hospital s vision to become the best hospital in Canada and an active partner in the best community health care system in the country. Just as we have realized so many other dreams by working together, I am confident that by continuing to provide financial support we can help to make this dream come true too. ~ Elaine Pitcher, Legacy Donor 6 Marion and Charles Harris When donations accumulate to $1,000 or more in memory of your loved one, their names are placed on the Recognition Wall. The names of Anne s parents are listed on the Celebration of Life Wall at our hospital. Building a Bridge to the Future Legacy Society The Building a Bridge to the Future Legacy Society honours individuals today whose estate plans will provide support for the Sault Area Hospital Foundation and its mission for tomorrow. Currently we have 24 Legacy Society members on our Recognition Wall which is located on Level Two in the main public corridor. Since these gifts are not received during a donor s lifetime, membership into the Legacy Society gives the Foundation the opportunity to recognize our donors during their lifetime. Other than notifying the SAHF, there are no obligations or requirements to become a member of the Legacy Society, simply advise us of your intentions. The information you provide will be held in strict confidence and no levels of giving are published. Your privacy and confidentiality will be entrusted. These gifts are made possible through bequests, life insurance, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, RRSP/RRIF, charitable gift annuity, charitable remainder trust, or by establishing an endowment fund. 7 With Thanks TD Canada Trust Cheque Presentation (L to R) Gisele Anderson, Manager of Maternal/Child Program; Robin Joanisse, RN Intensive Care Unit; Johanne Messier-Mann, Chief Nursing Officer / Director of Mat/Child & Medical Program; Susan Yurechuk, Branch Manager TD Station Tower; Laura Newman, Branch Manager TD Cambrian Mall; Mary Lynn Riberdy, Commercial Bank Relationship Manager; and Cheryl Pavoni, Executive Director SAH Foundation. December 2011 Medical staff at the Sault Area Hospital were awarded a TD Grant in Medical Excellence for $30,000 from TD Bank Group. The TD Grant in Nursing and Education provided funds to maintain and upgrade the skills of nurses and other practicing caregivers at the hospital. The gift, which is part of their commitment of $150,000 to be disbursed over a five year period, allowed over 100 participants to attend a number of educational activities that strengthened the level of healthcare provided at the Sault Area Hospital. Areas of particular educational interest to the nurses and practicing caregivers included courses in Health Assessment, Professional Growth, Nursing Theory, Medication Administration and the ACLS full course and recertification courses. In order to continue to improve patient care and services, it is imperative that hospital staff continually acquire new knowledge and skills. On-site learning opportunities, conferences and workshops are essential for allowing staff to network with peers, to share resolutions to common challenges, and to learn about state-of-the art practices. Our Sincere Thanks... We take this opportunity to extend our sincerest appreciation to the following Funeral Homes & Cremation Centres for their ongoing support of our Tribute Program. Their thoughtful and caring staff assist us in ensuring our in memoriam donations are received and processed confidentially and in the most efficient manner possible. 8 Advancing Healthcare EZ Pic Workstation for Speech Language Pathology As speech language pathologists within the Sault Area Hospital, a large part of our job is to evaluate the safety and efficiency of the oral and pharyngeal stages of the swallow. The EZ Pic Workstation captures the fluoroscopy of a Modified Barium Swallow study in real time which limits the amount of radiation patients are exposed to during a study. Because it allows for digital recording, we can now review the studies in slow motion, frame by frame, zoom in on parts of the swallow and/or the anatomy which leads to much more comprehensive assessment of the swallow. - Pam Rivera (L to R) Patty Poirier, RPN and Cindy Jeffery, RN Anesthetic Gas Monitors in the Opthalmology Suite The move to the new hospital came with the need to replace our aging Anesthetic Gas Monitors. Although these machines have a simple appearance, they play a crucial role in measuring medical gases and allowing the delivery of safe anesthesia. As such, their presence is necessary for every surgery, measuring the amount of oxygen that the patient inspires and the amount of carbon dioxide that the patient breathes out. In addition to allowing the safe provision of surgery in the OR, these machines are also found in Labor and Delivery and Ophthalmology where they allow care to be provided to maternity patients and those needing corrective eye surgery. One can safely say that without these monitors, many surgeries at Sault Area Hospital could not be completed! - Dr. Phil Dopp, Chief of Anesthesia Fit Test Respirator in Pediatrics/NICU Katey Delvecchio, Assistant Consultant, Corporate Wellness & Safety (left) and Carol Campbell, RN in Pediatrics/NICU complete a fit test with the new Fit Test Respirator. This piece of equipment is necessary for finding an adequate mask size for staff members in the event of an epidemic or airborne infectious disease. Each staff member is fitted with a proper mask, and the mask is tested with this device to ensure it has a proper seal. Urology OR Equipment The FTR Laser (large white machine on right) is used to vaporize and fragment stones in the bladder, ureter and kidney. The Hydroflex Pump (right) aids in visualization of stones so they can be removed from kidney or ureter (tube leading from kidney to bladder). Prostatectomy equipment is used when performing surgeries in the Operating Room (on table). The Bladder Scanner (not in photo) is used to assess bladder emptying noninvasively. The Automated Endoscope Leak Detector (not in photo) helps to ensure reliability and sterility of cystoscopes and ureteroscopes. (L to R) Tracy Pacione, RN, Karen Fantin, RN, Dr. Vin Mathur, Urologist, Ryan Corzier, RPN Electroencephalography (EEG) machine Nancy Marshall, an EEG technician, attaches electrodes to the head of a patient to demonstrate how an EEG is performed. The Electroencephalography (EEG) machine measures electrical activity in the brain and produces a print-out for analysis and diagnosis. The machine is mainly used to diagnose epilepsy.
