1 2017 COMMUNITY REPORT I wish to offer my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the staff and volunteers at Bobby s Hospice. My family and I found Bobby s to be a place of refuge on a difficult journey not only for our loved one but for the family. The skill, care and treatment my husband received as he neared the last part of his life s voyage was second to none. I want to offer a sincere thank you for all they do at Bobby s by providing both physical and spiritual care in our community. Watching a terminally ill loved one decline is almost intolerable. However, I found that when emotions and fears are shared with those who are experiencing these same emotions you find the strength to carry on. The loving guidance they offer as we go through the sorrow of losing our loved one is an irreplaceable asset to our community. I was privileged to take part in the seven-week grief program presented to us. I found strength to carry on by sharing my grief with the other participants. We have all now become good friends. Knowing you are not alone proved to be what we all seemed to need. I also attended the memorial service at the Assumption Church which was followed by a reception at Bobby s. I received a little angel at the service which now has a place on my tree. I feel so blessed that my husband was in the loving care of professional caregivers in his final moments and that I was able to be with him at that time. I was given strength, hope and comfort as I walked this part of my journey. Thank you to all who gave so lovingly to my husband and me. You are all Angels among us. Patricia Perrin Letter to the Editor Telegraph Journal, Saint John Thursday, December 22, Years of Caring For our Community
2 OUR COMMUNITY STEWARDSHIP Thirty-four years ago Hospice Greater Saint John was established to provide care and comfort to people on the end-of-life journey. In the beginning, our trained and experienced volunteers provided support in people s homes and in hospital along with grief support services to families coping with loss. On November 1, 2010, we proudly opened Atlantic Canada s first 10-bed residential hospice in the former St. Joseph s Convent. Our home is named Bobby s Hospice in honour of a 20-year volunteer, Catherine Bobby Lawson, who provided a significant donation to help us achieve our dreams of an in-patient Hospice. Bobby's Hospice has earned a stellar community reputation and become a preferred place of care for patients and families on the end-of-life journey. We are very fortunate to have a top performing staff team of over 35 healthcare, business and retail professionals and over 150 dedicated volunteers that are delivering exceptional results at both Bobby s Hospice and at the Hospice Shoppe. Hospice is a shining example of what can be achieved with innovative partnerships between government, charities and communities. We are very grateful for our partnership with the NB Government for some of our operational funding and the support of our very generous community who donate and volunteer with us. Because of you, we are able to deliver quality in-patient palliative care and grief support to people in their greatest hour of need. We are also pleased to support the development of additional residential hospices in our region and are actively serving as professional consultants to Hospices in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Our Board of Directors is honoured to steward this organization on behalf of our community. This year, we regrettably said goodbye to four Board members who retired after many years of service John Sheehan, Patrick Woods, Peter Forestell and Doug McCaig. We wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who supports Bobby s Hospice, our Hospice Shoppe and our Legacy Foundation. Thank you for caring and giving! 3 Bobby s Hospice is the most cost-effective way of caring for the 50-70% of palliative patients who need 24-hour in-patient care, yet do not need to be in hospital. This year, we admitted a record-high 116 patients to Bobby s Hospice. At Hospice, our focus of care is on comfort, not cure and on life, not death. Our goal is to make each person s last months of life as comfortable and meaningful as possible while also providing support to family members and friends. Our team of experienced palliative physicians, nurses and support workers provide expert pain and symptom management and compassionate, skilled care and support 24-hours a day to patients and families admitted to Bobby s Hospice. Our team of trained volunteers provide important non-medical support services. We also have a number of valued community partners that work with us to deliver excellent patient care and family support: Family Physicians, Local Clergy, Extra-Mural, Palliative Care Unit, Hospice Palliative Care Outreach Services and Shoppers Drug Mart on Crown Street. Our Quality Care Committee oversees patient care and provides educational services to ensure the delivery of high quality hospice palliative care in keeping with established standards and best practices. We develop an annual Quality Care Plan with defined performance outcomes that are tracked and reported. We host the Annual Living Well Dying Well Conference to educate our staff and other healthcare professionals in best practices. We also host an Annual Free Public Lecture to inform our community on palliative care services and care at Bobby s Hospice. In addition, we offer educational outreach services and host nursing students at Bobby s Hospice. Our spiritual care and grief support services help families to cope with the journey and adjust to life without their loved one after death. We also offer a Music Care Program which provides additional comfort and peace to patients and families at Bobby s Hospice. This year we welcomed a Music Therapy Intern, Julien Meyer, to Bobby s Hospice for his preceptorship. We are proud of the high quality care delivered by our excellent team in our beautiful, home-like environment. It is an honour and privilege to care for our friends and neighbours when they need it the most.
