6 Specific Volunteer Opportunities Clinical Opportunities 1. Blood Pressure Screeners - Assist staff with monitoring client blood pressures. Relevant healthcare fields include allopathic and osteopathic medicine, nursing, and physician assistant. 2. Fitness Room Assistant - Assist staff as they help new members learn proper use of equipment; help to clean, sanitize and maintain equipment. Relevant healthcare fields include physical therapy. Non-Clinical Opportunities 1. Desk Clerk Greet and meet patients and put patient information into the computer system. 6

7 Washington County Child Care Washington County Child Care is the hub for information about choosing child care and other children s services in the county dealing with such issues as children s health, nutrition, safety, and special needs. 9 Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Pennsylvania Volunteers are highly valued and essential to daily operations at DVSSP. Dedicated and caring individuals who want to make a difference in the lives of domestic violence victims and their children, as well as their community at large, are always welcome. Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern PA encourages anyone who feels that they can be of assistance, whether on an on-going basis or for a one time project, to contact us. 10 Specific Volunteer Opportunities Students have an opportunity to pursue and internship with Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Pennsylvania. During this time, students will have the opportunity to help clients make a service plan, forming goals and a safety plan for the future, as well as counseling mothers and children through their 2-year Freshstart Program. Relevant fields would include social work and counseling psychology. Requirements: 1. Complete an application and interview process. 2. Attend 45 hours of domestic violence training. 3. Obtain Act 33/34 clearances. 4. Commit to an average of 100 hours per year. 5. Complete eight hours of continuing education annually. 6. Be 18 years of age or older 10

11 Hunger Services Greater Pittsburgh Urban League Conceived of, and initiated and sustained by volunteers throughout its history, the Urban League Movement has been a magnet for people with a vision of a better urban America and the financial and intellectual capacity to make a difference came together. In 1910, Mrs. Ruth Standish Baldwin, a member of one of America s oldest families, and widow of railroad magnate, William Baldwin, and Dr. George Edmund Hayes, the first African American to receive a doctorate degree from Columbia University, founded what later became the National Urban League. For more than one hundred years this combination of dynamic leadership, vision and financial wherewithal has been and remains the formula for success of the Urban League on the national and local levels. 13 The Salvation Army The Salvation Army is an international movement that is affiliated with the Christian Church. It runs a summer camp that uses volunteers. In addition, throughout the year, they provide ministry opportunities. They also provide family and individual counseling. 15 Community Action Southwest Community Action Southwest (CAS), a non-profit organization, has been serving Washington and Greene counties since Founded by a group of community leaders, the initial focus of the agency was to identify local conditions that led to poverty, sensitize the community to the incidence and conditions of poverty, mobilize private and public resources to impact on poverty and develop programs and services that would help eradicate poverty. 16 Specific Volunteer Opportunities Non-Clinical Opportunities: Instructors for computer classes - Volunteers will help instruct individuals on how to operate simple technology, including computers and other electronic devices. Free tax returns (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Students will volunteer their time to file tax returns for needy individuals in the surrounding area. Adult education Volunteers will help to instruct classes on various subjects such as math and the sciences for needy individuals. One goal of adult education is to help the individual pass the General Education Development exam. Head Start and Pre-K classrooms Volunteers will help to instruct classes for pre-kindergarten children. Senior Services (Greene County only) In which volunteers will aid senior members of our society with various daily needs. Clerical support In which students will help to provide support to Community Action Southwest by answering phones, running errands, etc. Special event committee Volunteers will help to plan, organize, and execute various special events throughout the year. 16

19 Specific Volunteer Opportunities Clinical Opportunities: Fitness Room Trainer Volunteers would travel to the Disability Options Network building and assist disabled individuals with exercises, including weight training with the equipment available. This provides an excellent opportunity for any individual hoping to enter the field of physical or occupational therapy. Home Health Aide Interested Volunteers would travel into the homes of disabled individuals in Washington Country, aiding the home health aide with their daily tasks. This provides an excellent method by which students can gain patient contact hours related to the healthcare profession. Non-Clinical Opportunities: Technology Teacher Volunteers would travel to the Disability Options Network building and assist disabled and elderly individuals with using basic technology, including computers and tablets. 19

20 Dress For Success Washington Low-income women seeking employment face a dilemma. They have the drive and initiative to pursue employment but they do not have the economic means to acquire interview and workplace clothing. We help level the interview playing field, removing a simple but significant barrier between the client and the workplace. 202 North Main Street, Washington Pa

21 Specific Volunteer Opportunities Non-Clinical Opportunities: Client Consultant Client Consultants work one-on-one with women in need of clothing. Our client consultants range from women professionals who work in downtown Pittsburgh to women entrepreneurs to retirees. Volunteers typically commit a few hours a month during work hours to assist our clients. Operations If you are recently retired or can volunteer with us between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., we would love to have your help. We need people who can help us answer our phones, update our database and website, and do basic word processing projects. Donation Pick-Up We need volunteers with SUV s, minivans or trucks who are able and willing to help us pick up larger donated items that we provide to our clients. Donation pick-up times can be arranged to fit your schedule and the donors, and items would need to be delivered to our offices during regular business hours. Your accrued mileage and other direct expenses are tax deductible on itemized returns. Clothing Inventory We need help evaluating, sorting, and prepping donations. Items we are not able to use are saved to donate to a local shelter or another charity, or are retained for the semi-annual Fill a Bag sales that are held for clients. Special Events/Committees Dress for Success Pittsburgh sponsors a number of events to increase the 21

22 community s awareness of the organization and to raise funds to support our programs. If you like project work, networking and event planning, we would love to have you help plan and execute special events. Program Volunteers A huge component of Dress for Success Pittsburgh is our job retention and career advancement development. We need volunteers who would like to be speakers at our Career Development Workshops and our Professional Women s Groups. We also need volunteers to assist with the programs themselves, including setting up the spaces, obtaining food donations, mentoring clients, contacting clients, following up and more! 22

23 Genesis of Pittsburgh Washington Genesis Centers are community outreach centers located in Washington and Allegheny County that provide programs and services to women in need. They offer free pregnancy testing, maternity and infant clothing, practical educational classes, distribution of baby equipment and essentials. Instructors Students will be instructing classes on the topics of Parenting and pregnancy. 3. Fundraising Assistant Make phone calls, prepare mailings, deliver and pick up supplies for our baby bottle fundraising drives in Washington County area. Low-Level Literacy Tutoring and Family Literacy Tutoring Help promote literacy for individuals in the Southwestern Pennsylvania area by tutoring individuals in math and reading skills. 2. English as a Second Language Tutoring - In which students will help tutor individuals in the surrounding area hoping to learn English as their second language, helping them integrate themselves into society. 3. GED Preparation and Tutoring In which volunteers will tutor individuals in an attempt to help them pass the General Education Development test, which signifies that they have a high or higher level of education. 4. Baby Book Bag Project - The Baby Book Bag project features bright yellow tote bags which are hand-stuffed by community volunteers; screenprinted with a special logo; filled with children s books, community library listings, and literature outlining the importance of reading to babies from birth 26

Are a group of women who focus their efforts organizing and performing fund raisers for the hospital by way of various sales and events. Ask me! Greeters While officially titled greeters, volunteers in this group perform a wide range of tasks according to their interests and skills. Opportunities include both clinical and non-clinical experiences, and include, but are not limited to: Clinical Opportunities (All clinical Positions are ideal for students hoping to enter the medical profession, as they allow students to gain experience with patient contact in a clinical setting). 1. 31 American Red Cross of Western Pennsylvania Among other tasks, the American Red Cross plays a crucial role in disaster relief, ranging from helping families suffering from home fires, to responding to large scale disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes. As a volunteer with the American Red Cross, students will be able to help with situations such as these, gaining valuable experience with these types of situations, as well as gaining experience interacting with patients oneon-one. In addition, working with the Red Cross will allow the student to establish several valuable relationships with various organizations and individuals, including professionals in the healthcare field. 32 Specific Volunteer Opportunities Clinical Opportunities: 1. Disaster Action Volunteers will help the Red Cross to alleviate suffering in the time of emergency, including events such as fires and floods. Volunteers will go into the field and help to assess the needs of the families, and subsequently help to satisfy these needs. 2. First aid/cpr Training Volunteers will have the opportunity to become certified in first aid and CPR. 3. Internship Opportunities In which individuals can directly service and impact the community in which they live through collaborative efforts with organizations throughout the community. The Pillowcase Project In which students will contribute to the disaster preparedness effort by educating children between ages 8 and 11 in preparing for disasters. Information conveyed will include hazardous situations, coping with stress, etc. 2. Disaster Preparedness In which volunteers will travel to the homes of families, helping them to formulate a comprehensive plan in the event of some disaster, including fire, flooding, etc. 32

Must complete a child protective services release form, which will be completed at no cost to the student. 3. Any volunteer who has not been a resident of Pennsylvania for 10 consecutive years will have to undergo an FBI background check, for which the student will be reimbursed. *Many requirement are only for volunteers ages 18 and older. 33

This experience also provides volunteers with an opportunity to gain patient contact. Non-clinical Opportunities: 1. 36 Washington County Women s Network The Washington County Women s Network is a collaboration of women who come together to honor, support and encourage women in our community. Formed in 1996, they honor women who have overcome obstacles in their lives such as substance Abuse, Victimization both sexual abuse and domestic violence and medical/physical challenges at their annual event the Saturday before Mother s Day at the Washington Crown Center. This is an event volunteers are welcome to help in. Their mission is to recognize women of all ages and walks of life in the community who have overcome barriers to become successful. Disaster Preparedness Instructor In which volunteers will help families to prepare for disasters by speaking with families and coordinating a comprehensive disaster plan. 2. The Pillowcase Project In which volunteers will help educate children in preparing for disasters. For example, children will be taught coping mechanisms for stress, as well as hazards in the home. 37

38 Washington Hospital and Southwest Regional Hospital The Washington Hospital is a member of the Washington Health System serving the area of Washington in Washington County. Services and specialties in this hospital include cardiovascular diagnostics and surgery, orthopedics, neurosciences, women s health, cancer care, children s therapy, rehabilitation and advanced imaging, among many others. Washington As a teaching hospital, Washington Hospital offers great services to individuals hoping to participate in longer term, in depth shadowing opportunities with a healthcare professional. Finally, Washington Hospital has need of volunteers every day of the week at nearly any hour of the day, providing students with a flexible way to give back to their community. 39 Specific Volunteer Opportunities Clinical Positions (All clinical Positions are ideal for students hoping to enter the medical profession, as they allow students to gain experience with patient contact in a clinical setting). 1. Emergency Department Students will visit the rooms of patients and their families, offering help and company when requested. 2. Radiology Department 3. Outpatient Surgery 4. Intensive Care Unit 5. Hospice Care 6. Patient-Centered Family Care Students will act as a liaison between the hospital and family/patient, encouraging feedback and aiding understanding of their situation. Non-Clinical Positions 1. Gift Shop Students will work at the hospital Gift Shop as a cashier. 2. Snack Cart Students will be responsible for pushing a cart to the different departments of the hospital to provide employees and visitors with a chance to buy snacks. 3. Admissions/Registration Students will work at the front desk of the hospital, registering patients and providing instructions to visitors. 4. Special Projects May include special events or other events with which the hospital may need help. Requirements Interested students will be interviewed by volunteer services, have blood drawn for various tests, attend a 2 hour orientation, and be trained by a hospital staff member or volunteer during their first or first two shifts. Volunteers must complete 50 hours of service annually. 39

40 PA Mountain Service Corps Americorps Pennsylvania Mountain Service Corps, PMSC, is a local initiative of AmeriCorps. This National Service Movement engages thousands of Americans of all ages and backgrounds in a domestic Peace Corps. Members serve their communities in the areas of education, environment, public safety, and human needs and receive a living stipend, educational monies, and a wealth of experience. Join a growing team of citizens committed to serving their country. 42 Presbyterian Senior Care Presbyterian Senior Care provides comprehensive continuum of care and service options to meet the needs of older adults from all walks of life, wherever they are in life s journey. Presbyterian Senior Care offers several volunteer opportunities in which students will have the chance to interact with an aging population. Amongst these opportunities are positions in which the students will gain experience with patient contact, as well as with organizing and helping with various events and activities. One unique aspect of Presbyterian Senior care is the variety of residents with which volunteers can interact. With different sections varying from independent living to skilled nursing facilities, students will have an opportunity to interact with residents according to their own interests. 43 Specific Volunteer Opportunities While none of the opportunities listed are strictly clinical, any time spent interacting with residents may count toward patient contact hours for health professions schools such as Physician s Assistant or Nursing. 1. Music and Memory Program In which students will be talking with patients, asking questions about their music preferences, past experiences, etc. in order to make a play list to which the patient will listen as a form of music therapy. 2. Never Too Late Program In which students will be teaching residents as they learn to use new technology, including touch screen computers, music players, Skype, etc. 3. Story Telling Students can choose to come to Presbyterian Senior Care once per week and read books to interested residents. 4. Interested Students can also choose or be assigned to a resident of Presbyterian Senior care, and conduct weekly visits to the patient, playing games and providing social support for the resident. This experience would be ideal for any individual entering the healthcare field who would like to gain experience interacting with patients on a regular basis. 5. Finally, Students not interested in interacting with the residents directly are able to help with organizing and setting up for special events throughout the year. 43

45 Ami, Inc. of Washington & Greene Counties AMI, Inc. of Washington-Greene Counties is a non-profit agency that provides social and psychiatric rehabilitation to adults recovering from mental illness. Volunteers have been critical to the success of AMI, Inc. Local groups generously provide holiday gifts, refreshments and special treats for AMI, Inc. consumers. Individuals share special skills, provide entertainment, teach crafts, assist staff with scheduled activities and serve as board members.
