CONSULTANT CLINICAL ONCOLOGIST February 2017

WELCOME LETTER Thank you for your interest in Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (STH). I knew as soon as I arrived in Sheffield that I wanted to stay, both because I loved the city and I very much enjoyed working at Weston Park. Sheffield is such a fabulous place to live - all the amenities of a city but with a real sense of community living - plus we have the Peak District right on our doorstep. When I arrived in 1993 we were a small oncology department. We ve grown enormously over the years and yet managed to retain that friendly environment; all of our staff go above and beyond for our patients, making Weston Park a place I m proud to say I work. We have an outstanding reputation both locally and nationally and we are now at a very exciting point in our expansion, having recently developed an ambitious strategy which includes a number of new consultant posts within each of our clinical teams as well as an extensive upgrade of our estate. Our new posts provide an opportunity for dynamic individuals to join our team and to help shape our services - come and join us on our exciting new adventure. We have a range of different opportunities coming available in the department in the near future and are very keen to speak to any interested individuals. I very much look forward to hearing from you soon. Dr Patricia Fisher Clinical Director Specialised Cancer Services 2

Our vision is to be recognised as the best provider of healthcare, clinical research and education in the UK and a strong contributor to the aspiration of Sheffield to be a vibrant and healthy city. We have begun this journey with our staff, partners and patients and we will continue to explore every aspect of our business to ensure we are doing our very best to achieve our vision. We strive to recruit and retain the best staff: the dedication and skill of our employees are what make our services successful and we continue to keep the health and wellbeing of our staff as a priority. 3

THE DEPARTMENT Weston Park Cancer Centre is the base for all oncological services across South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire. It is also one of the major Radiotherapy Centres in the country and is sited in the central hospital campus area of the city, within a quarter of a mile from the University, the Children s Hospital, Jessop Hospital for Women and the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. Our purpose-built Cancer Research Centre, partly funded through charitable gifts and donations, is responsible for numerous modern advances within the field of cancer research. This has contributed to our world-leading reputation as a centre of excellence in the fight against cancer. In addition, a Teenage Cancer Trust Unit for adolescents, jointly funded between the Teenage Cancer Trust and Weston Park Hospital Cancer Appeal, was completed in Our most recent development plans include the refurbishment of our wards, one of which is now complete and features the latest technology including circadian lighting. The refurbishment of our second inpatient ward is currently underway. Weston Park Hospital acts as an NSCAG supra-regional referral centre for the diagnosis and treatment of gestational trophoblastic disease and a national and European centre for the treatment of arterio-venous malformations with the stereotactic radiosurgery unit (in conjunction with the neurosurgical team). CHEMOTHERAPY There is a day case chemotherapy suite which offers the opportunity to treat 38 patients at any one time, in addition to 8 on CRU and 1 PICC bed. The inpatient beds at Weston Park are spread over two separate wards and a purpose built assessment unit is situated adjacent to the main ward area. RADIOTHERAPY Sheffield offers a significant range of specialist care, including stereotactic radiotherapy and stereotactic radiosurgery. The radiotherapy equipment is housed in a large treatment hall and includes state of the art equipment: Seven Varian Linear Accelerators OBI is currently available on four Linear Accelerator, all others have portal imaging IMRT software is commissioned for all Linear Accelerators, and VMAT (RapidArc) is available on five One spare bunker One Xstrahl superficial/orthovoltage low energy radiotherapy machine Two PDR Selectron for gynaecological use in a purpose built extension Two Virtual Simulators (spiral CT scanner with specific planning software) Facilities for the use of unsealed isotopes in therapy and diagnosis The radiosurgery department is The National Centre for Stereotactic Radiosurgery and one of only two centres in the country who have been awarded a contract to treat the whole range of clinical indications, including the most complex and rare tumours. The team have access to two matched gamma knives in the city and work closely with colleagues in London and NHSE to further develop the clinical service. 4

THE DEPARTMENT OUTPATIENT SERVICES Outpatient facilities within the hospital are based across 6 consulting suites, with approximately 50% of outpatient work carried out at Weston Park Cancer Centre. The remaining 50% are seen as outpatients in the local district general hospitals. There is also an outpatient chemotherapy suite staffed appropriately by trained nurses. We put considerable emphasis on the need for parallel consultation in the treatment of malignant disease, resulting in joint clinic sessions being held with Consultants in other specialties. These include: endocrinology, dermatology, gynaecology, urology, paediatrics, ENT and maxillofacial surgery. SUPPORT SERVICES There is a diagnostic imaging department with x-ray and impression suite facilities provided in close association with the simulator suite and the radiotherapy department. Diagnostic CT and MRI scanning are available on site. Haematology, chemical pathology, bacteriological and histopathology services are currently provided from the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. Other specialised investigations are provided by the appropriate departments in nearby hospitals. 5

THE DEPARTMENT RESEARCH The Cancer Clinical Trials Centre at Weston Park Hospital employs a team of research nurses, clinical trials assistants and data managers who manage a wide portfolio of clinical trials, at any one time typically managing more than 150 trials. The centre is funded by a combination of grants from the Yorkshire and Humber NIHR Clinical Research Network, the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, the Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC) Network and income from commercial trials. We are particularly proud to have recently been granted renewal of our ECMC centre status, running for a further 5 years from April This will allow us to continue to expand our portfolio of translational research and early phase trials. The research priorities of The University of Sheffield Academic Unit of Clinical Oncology are in bone oncology, tumour microenvironment and nucleic acid and genome biology. The academic department is closely integrated with the NHS department. Both academic and NHS consultants are heavily engaged in supporting research both locally as principal investigators and nationally as chief investigators and members of NCRI clinical studies groups and trial management groups. Yorkshire Cancer Research has recently announced a multi-million pound programme of research that will bring the latest innovation in cancer treatment and care to Sheffield. The charity joined forces with the University of Sheffield and Weston Park Cancer Centre in a ground breaking collaboration that will combine pioneering scientific and technological developments with a clear emphasis on improving cancer outcomes in the region. The 4.5m investment will fund the appointment of 10 of the UK s leading researchers and cancer specialists, whose expertise will establish Sheffield as one of the best centres in the country for patient-focused cancer research. The appointments will be made over the next three years and each project will run for five years The department would welcome applicants who are interested in incorporating academic research into their job plan. 6

THE TEAM Working in both our hospitals and community health services are some of the best professionals in the NHS. Many of our specialists are leaders in their field and are supported by a strong team of non clinical staff. We have around 16,000 employees at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, making us the second biggest employer in the city. We aim to reflect the diversity of local communities and are proud of our new and existing partnerships with local people, patients, neighbouring NHS organisations, local authority and charitable bodies. Our long standing partnerships with the City s universities and colleges helps us to deliver a well trained workforce now and for the future. The Oncology Department has an extremely dynamic, committed and friendly team of staff. Our consultants have regular team meetings to discuss their work and provide support to colleagues with challenging cases to ensure the highest level of care is provided to our patients. A full list of consultant medical staff currently working within the department can be found in Annex 4. 7
