1 ABM Health Board JOB DESCRIPTION registrar (ST3+) OBSTETRICS & GYNAECOLOGY Area Profile Swansea is the second largest city in Wales and has a. It has many areas of outstanding natural beauty including the sandy bays and parkland of the Gower Peninsula.. Its importance as a Conference Centre is growing and it has many cultural attributes including a thriving theatre and annual music festival. The Ospreys regional rugby union team and Swansea City Football club are situated in the city as well as first class rugby clubs in Swansea, Neath, Aberavon and Dunvant. There are several good golf courses, an athletic stadium and Olympic swimming pool and the seaside village of Mumbles as well as Gower, wind surfing and sea fishing. The cliffs overhanging many of the beaches of Gower are popular sites for rock climbing and Rhossili Down is a favourite menu for hang-gliders and para-gilders. The capital city of Cardiff and the of Wales College of Medicine are easily accessible within 45 minutes by the M4 motorway, which also provides access to the Severn Bridge; London by rail takes 3 hours. ABM NHS Health Board The Health Board is the largest in Wales, and one of the largest in the UK. Launched on 1st October 2009, following a merger between the former award-winning Swansea and Bro Morgannwg NHS Trusts, we employ around 16,000 staff, and have an annual budget of more than 770 million. The Health Board has four major hospitals: Morriston and Singleton in Swansea, the Princess of Wales in Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot in Baglan. It also have 14 community hospitals, clinics and treatment centres with inpatient beds, and 46 community clinics and health centres, all helping to deliver care. The HB has more than 2,800 beds. ABM LHB looks after a population of about 600,000 people, covering Swansea, Neath Port Talbot, Bridgend, and the western Vale of Glamorgan. In addition, its specialist services cover much wider areas of Wales. It deals annually with more than 110,000 in-patients who come into its hospitals either for planned operations, or for emergency, unscheduled, care. Around 220,000 patients a year attend the A&E and casualty/minor injury departments.

2 As the first Trust in Wales to be granted title, it works closely with Swansea and its Medical School, along with other university and college partners in South Wales. Singleton Hospital Singleton Hospital is the other District General Hospital serving the Swansea area overlooking Swansea Bay and approximately 8 miles from Morriston, adjacent to the campus of College of Swansea. It has approximately 650 beds with outpatient facilities including Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Acute General Medicine, General Surgery, ENT Surgery, Care of the Elderly, Ophthalmology, Dermatology and Paediatrics, in addition to High dependency Unit and Coronary Care. The sub-regional radiotherapy department for West Wales is based at Singleton Hospital, together with the administrative headquarters of the Cancer Centre. The department of neonatal medicine provides a sub-regional service for South West Wales. Close contact is maintained with the appropriate departments within the and there is direct access to the Computing Centre. The Pathology Unit includes the PHLS reference laboratory. The Department of Medical Photography and an excellent medical library are on site. Recent developments include the Diabetes and Endocrine Unit and the Medical Assessment Unit. The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology Singleton Hospital The establishment in the Directorate is: 13 Consultants, 1 locum Consultant, 3 Associate Specialists, 1 Staff Grade, 12 Specialty Registrars and 8 Specialty Trainees (including VTS and career Trainees) and 1 FP2. The accommodation at Singleton was opened in 1991 and consists of purpose built block including Obstetric, Gynaecological and Paediatric wards, Central Delivery Unit, Special Care Baby Unit and clinic space. There is a modern Colposcopy suite, a Continence suite, and gynaecological operations are located in the main surgical theatre suite. In total there are 52 Obstetric beds plus 10 delivery rooms, with two obstetric theatres and a high dependency observation area, on the Central Delivery Unit. Of the Gynaecological beds 28 are open seven days a week with a further 13 Monday- Friday day unit beds. Neath Port Talbot Hospital The facilities at Neath Port Talbot Hospital opened in 2002 consist of, a Midwifery Led birthing unit, dedicated clinic space. There are 7 LDRP (Labour / Delivery / Recovery / Postnatal) rooms,. There is a modern Colposcopy Suite and dedicated Surgical Day Unit The Post This is a whole time post, commencing a.s.a.p, for a period of 1 year. The successful candidate will be expected to attend and teach in outpatient clinics, on ward rounds, labour ward and theatre sessions. In these clinical sessions the successful candidate will undertake supervised teaching sessions for year 3 & year 4 graduate entry medical

3 students from Swansea. Due to the teaching component the successful candidate will see fewer patients per clinic. It may be possible to negotiate on call in O&G at registrar or senior registrar level, however the main commitment of this post is to deliver undergraduate medical teaching. There is funding within this post for the successful candidate to undertake a certificate in postgraduate medical education based in Swansea. Protected time for this is included in the weekly timetable. The labour ward in Singleton is a busy unit with approximately 4,000 deliveries a year. The post is offered subject to Terms and Conditions of Service governing the appointment of hospital medical and dental staff in England and Wales with modifications applicable within the ABM NHS Health Board. Academic Facilities There are active Postgraduate Medical Centres at Singleton and Morriston Hospitals with full programmes of activities. The main hospital library for the area is situated at Singleton Hospital under the aegis of a Chartered Librarian. Weekly medical clinical meetings, x-ray meetings, journal clubs and Grand Rounds are held at which Consultants are expected to play an active part. Each month one session is devoted to medical audit. The library services at both sites are comprehensive, and Professional librarians and clerical officers staff the libraries. Remuneration will be according to Specialty Registrar national pay scale ranging between 30,302 and 47,647 per annum.
