Director of Fundraising and Marketing Candidate pack Sheffield Hospitals Charity Community Fundraising (Neurocare) Candidate pack - November 2017
Welcome from the Executive Director Dear Applicant Thank you for your interest in the role of Community Fundraising (Neurocare). Sheffield Hospitals Charity helps patients being treated for almost every condition across all of the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust sites. The Charity s core mission is to enhance the care and treatment of patients using our hospitals by raising funds and making grants to support areas beyond the scope of NHS funding. We work with our NHS partners to provide an outstanding healthcare experience, with the best possible outcome, for our patients. Our charity has a long and proud history and our beginnings can be traced back to the formation of the NHS in Since those early days much has changed, although our commitment to enhance the lives of patients, their families and carers, and indeed our own staff, remains the same. This is an exciting time to join the charity as in April this year we became independent from the NHS, which gives us even greater ability to deliver a step change in our income and to invest further in vital services across Sheffield hospitals and community services. An opportunity has arisen for a Community Fundraising to work as part of the busy Fundraising Team, providing lead fundraising support for linked charity Neurocare. This is a varied role which covers a wide range of fundraising duties; events management, corporate relationship management, supporting third party fundraisers, presenting to local groups etc. We are looking for an outgoing and confident person with excellent communication skills, who can hit the ground running and work well under pressure. If you feel that you have the skills and experience we are looking for, then we look forward to hearing from you. David Reynolds Executive Director
About us The Charity s core mission is to make life better for patients by improving the care and treatment they receive. This is achieved by raising funds and making grants to support areas beyond the scope of NHS funding. With the generous support and hard work of our donors and fundraisers, we invest more than 2.5 million each year to improve healthcare today and for future generations. This investment is predominantly focussed on; Enhancing patient care and family support by providing those extras that help make being in hospital more bearable Transforming the hospital environment to provide a more welcoming and attractive space for staff, patients and their families Providing state-of-the-art specialist medical equipment that can reduce treatment time and improve outcomes for patients Supporting pioneering research into the cause, prevention and treatment of illness - without research, breakthroughs in medical treatment wouldn t be possible Supporting doctors and nurses to take part in training to improve their existing knowledge, bring new developments back to Sheffield or to share their own best practice. We strive to provide a level of patient care beyond that which NHS funding alone can deliver. We support the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Northern General Hospital, Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, Weston Park Cancer Hospital, Jessop Wing maternity hospital, Sheffield Children s Hospital and services delivered in the community. All of these areas see patients from across Sheffield, the surrounding areas and often further afield.
Sheffield Hospitals Charity provides support to patients and their families and staff within the three Foundation Trusts in Sheffield. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS FT Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (STH) is one of the UK s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts, employing circa 16,700 staff across five hospital sites and numerous community-based settings. With an annual budget of over 1 billion Sheffield Teaching Hospitals provide a full range of local hospital and community services for people in Sheffield, as well as specialist care for patients from further afield, including cancer, spinal cord injuries, renal and cardiothoracic services. As a member of the Shelford Group which represents the ten leading NHS multi-speciality academic healthcare organisations, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals have a long history of high quality care, clinical excellence and innovation. STH have a tradition of clinical and scientific achievement and through partnerships with the University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University, other health and social care providers and industry, they remain at the forefront of advancements in clinical services, teaching and research. Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS FT Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust are a provider of a wide range of specialist health and social care services to individuals and their carers or families in Sheffield, including mental health services for adults and older people, services for people with learning disabilities and services for people with drug and alcohol problems. Sheffield Hospitals Charity also collaborates with Sheffield Flourish, a community hub that enables people living with mental health conditions to find the resources and connections they need to build the lives they wish to lead. Sheffield Children s NHS FT Sheffield Children s NHS Foundation Trust (SCH) is one of only four dedicated children s hospital trusts in the UK and provides integrated healthcare for children and young people, including community and mental health care as well as acute and specialist services. SCH have a wellestablished independent charity and therefore we seek to avoid duplication and collaborate where possible.
Helping patients feel even better Cystic Fibrosis patients we have built a new 12-bed ward for young adults with Cystic Fibrosis at the Northern General Hospital. This purpose-built facility has been described as a real home from home by the patients that have been treated there. Accident and Emergency patients we have helped to save lives by building a new helipad directly in front of the Emergency Department. Premature and sick babies we have comforted families with a premature baby in the Neonatal Unit (NICU) at The Jessop Wing, as funds raised have helped us to contribute towards the cost of a Neonatal Family Centred Care Nurse for a three year period to work directly with families in NICU. Dementia patients we have been able to bring comfort to patients with dementia by providing them with empathy dolls. These soft dolls are a perfect size to hold and are cleverly weighted to enhance the feeling of holding a real baby when they are cradled. Cancer patients we have provided complementary therapies such as massages and Reiki to help reduce patients stress levels and also to make them feel more relaxed and alleviate some of their anxieties. We fund specialist Welfare Advisors who provide practical support and guidance to cancer patients.
Spinal injuries patients we have purchased an Ekso exoskeleton for the Princess Royal Spinal Cord Injury Centre at the Northern General Hospital. The exoskeleton is a revolutionary product, developed to help paralysed patients walk again. Brain injury patients we have provided our neuro-surgeons with an enhanced microscopic device, which enables them to illuminate specific sections of the brain during an operation. This makes it easier to identify abnormal blood vessels and other problems with brain tissue. Patients with communication difficulties we have supported patients with conditions such as MND, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis by providing them with portable writing tablets which respond to eye movement as a method to select letters or phrases. Epilepsy patients we have funded digital video recorders to help patients with epilepsy. The video recorders enable the patients to capture their seizures on camera, which can help clinicians to discover if the seizures are epileptic or non-epileptic, where they might be occurring in the brain and more importantly help them to make a diagnosis and treatment plan. Leukaemia patients we have relieved fears for leukaemia patients, helping them to come to terms with their illness. We have been able to fund a clinical psychologist who understands exactly what they are going through and helps to prepare the patients for their treatment, so they are fully informed and prepared for what s to come. Myeloma patients we have given patients with myeloma hope that they can beat blood cancer by funding a project to progress a virus to eradicate this disease for which there is currently no cure.
Neurocare This role focuses on providing lead fundraising support for linked charity Neurocare. Neurocare raises money for the Neurosciences Department, primarily based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, but also provides some services the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield Children s Hospital and Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience. The charity has raised over 3.5 million to buy equipment and support research, to save and improve the lives of patients with a range of debilitating or potentially fatal neurological conditions. How it all began The charity, founded in 1988 by neurospecialists Robert Battersby and Jan Mundy, started from a simple wish to help those most in need. They found that they knew exactly what was needed to help because of their in-depth knowledge about their wards. They wanted to improve the care that they could give but their efforts were held back only by a lack of funding. Not giving up so easily, they proposed that if they could raise just half of the money they needed for vital life-saving equipment, the hospital could cover the rest. This landmark project was the first of many successful local fundraising campaigns in Yorkshire and was the beginning of Neurocare. Neurocare help improve the lives of patients with a wide range of debilitating or potentially fatal neurological conditions. Donations provide vital funds to support patients, their families and the staff who cares for them. Charitable funds purchase life-saving equipment, fund ground-breaking developments in neurological research and also pay for training for nurses, doctors and surgeons, to further their ability to treat patients. Most recently Neurocare has raised 250,000 for their ROSA Robot Appeal. ROSA in an interoperative robot that aids brain surgery and revolutionises the way we can operate here in Sheffield. ROSA assists in a wide range of treatments, including Parkinson s, Epilepsy, tumour surgery and endoscopy procedures. No other NHS hospital in the UK has this equipment so we are incredibly lucky to have ROSA right here on our doorstep.
