1 September November 2014 HSN Presented With Energy Cost Index (ECI) Award Health Sciences North s Building Services department was awarded with a prestigious 5-Star Energy Award from Camfil Canada Inc., the world s largest and leading manufacturer of filters and clean air solutions. Health Sciences North qualified for this award by demonstrating continued commitment to saving energy while providing quality indoor air for patients, staff and visitors alike. Implemented in 2014, the five-star Energy Cost Index (ECI) air filters have placed HSN in the top 20% of customers worldwide who have chosen to make a difference in energy usage, globally. The filters were implemented as part of Facilities Management/ Building Services energy management reduction plan explains Jeff Dunn. They were installed to help save energy, reduce our carbon footprint as well as improve air quality for patients, visitors, physicians and staff at HSN. This award recognizes facilities that conserve our natural resources and put employees, visitors and patients first when it comes to indoor air quality. A big thank-you and congratulations goes out to HSN s Building Services team for winning this prestigious award and keeping the air we breathe safe and clean! 3 HSN Needs Volunteers! Do you know someone with a few hours to spare each week? Or is looking for a way to have a meaningful impact on their community? Send them our way! HSN is looking for volunteers at the Ramsey Lake Health Centre and Sudbury Outpatient Centre. This is the perfect opportunity to stay active, stay involved, meet new people and make an impact. Call HSN Volunteer Services for more information on how to lend a helping hand to health care! ext. 3 Meet Donna Why does she volunteer? I had always wanted to help out at the hospital. I m retired now and love the interaction with others. How long has she been a volunteer? I ve been a volunteer for almost a year, I started last December and have volunteered in five different departments. Why should others volunteer? Volunteering gives me personal fulfilment it s very rewarding. There s something for everyone, whether someone wants to help out in an office or walk people to where they need to go. I spend time in the pool with kids, which is something I never imagined I d be doing. There s a lot to offer. Anything to add? Wear comfortable shoes! National Recognition: EMS Exemplary Service Medal Presented to Corey Petrie Congratulations to one of our own Corey Petrie who was presented with the Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service Medal by Major General Richard Rohmer recognizing 20 years of exemplary service. Since 1994, as part of the Canadian Honours Programme, the Governor General annually selects Canadian EMS professionals to receive an Exemplary Service Medal for 20 years of exemplary service and a bar for each 30 years and 40 years of exemplary service. This award recognizes professionals in the provision of prehospital emergency medical services to the public, who have performed their duties in an exemplary manner, characterized by the highest standards of good conduct, industry and efficiency. At least 10 of these years must have been in the provision of prehospital emergency medical services to the public which involves potential risk to the individual. Corey is an active paramedic at the street level and has been for over 21 years and continues in his role as Paramedic Practice Coordinator for over 5 years in our North Bay office. He ensures efficient, effective and timely delivery of continuing medical education and continuous quality improvement for paramedics in the Nipissing and Parry Sound district. CONGRATULATIONS COREY!

4 Kudos! HSN congratulates Innocencia Nyarambi, a radiation therapist at the Northeast Cancer Centre. She obtained her Master s Degree in Radiotherapy and Oncology from Sheffield University, U.K. Kudos to Carol Cameletti from the Mental Health and Addictions Program. She has completed her Masters Degree through Lakehead University, specializing in Gerontology. Carol works with our Seniors Mental Health Team. It takes a strong person to complete a graduate degree while continuing to work full time. Kudos to Carol! Spreading Red for an Important Cause! Staff in the ultrasound department have decided to participate in the "Bundle up in Red" campaign from the Reseau Access Network. During the last month, breaks and lunches have been filled with the clickity clack of knitting needles and crochet hooks busily creating beautiful red scarfs. The scarfs have information cards attached to them that will explain the ongoing issues related to HIV/AIDS locally. You may have seen them as you`re travelling throughout the City. They are free for people to take and wear, especially helpful for homeless who would benefit from a warm scarf this winter. To date they have knitted 20 scarfs. Way to make a difference in our community and helping to spread awareness of an important health issue!

The services of the Functional Rehabilitation Group include: Function and Pain Program WSIB Specialty Clinics Amputee & Prosthetics Clinic Early Shoulder Physician Assessments Hand & Wrist Clinic Shoulder & Elbow Clinic Regional Evaluation Centre Independent Medical Assessments Employer Services Driver Assessment and Rehabilitation (DARS) Manager: Linda Scherzinger, Outpatient Rehabilitation Regulated Health Professional staff of the Functional Rehabilitation Group (formerly known as Forward to Function) of outpatient rehabilitation, offer employer services to help address, prevent and reduce workplace injuries, in keeping with the hospital True North Metrics of zero harm to our people. Reducing injuries may ultimately lessen operational costs. The Functional Rehabilitation Group offers a wide range of services utilizing years of extensive expertise in the area of musculoskeletal injuries. Managers must approve costs prior to engaging in services. Though not limited to the following, we provide many services such as; Ergonomic Assessments, Job Demands Analysis (JDA), Functional Capacities Evaluation (FCE), Job Coaching as well as special services like education programs and specialized health & safety education. This Month s Feature: Employer Services The Functional Rehabilitation Group has been providing services within HSN for many years, including hands on education for all new employees during hospital orientation. We also assist departments with equipment research needs and provide recommendations for best equipment set-up such as portable computer stations and sit stand workstations. With the help of the Functional Rehabilitation Group you can better understand your environmental ergonomics, improve safety at work, reduce risk of injuries, and benefit from job coaching and job matching. Our Team: Carol Stanyon Registered Nurse, Clinical Leader Linda Coffin Occupational Therapist Lyse Boyle Medical Secretary If you or your workers are experiencing musculoskeletal issues, or you simply have education needs for prevention, we can help!

It is satisfying to help a worker and/or manager problem solve in order to improve the worker s comfort and quality of work life.
