When booking your visits, please remind staff to book an interpreter. N e e d a r i d e? A C a n a d i a n C a n c e r S o c i e t y v o l u n t e e r d r i v e r m a y b e a b l e t o h e l p. If you need help getting to your cancer-related appointment, the Canadian Cancer Society may be able to help. A volunteer driver can pick you up and bring you to LRCP or your local hospital and offer you a friendly, supportive environment along the way. To learn more about this service, please contact the Canadian Cancer Society in your community or call There is a one-time registration fee of $ for this service. Once you are registered, you will have to schedule your rides at least 3 full business days before your appointments. C a n c e r c a r e c l o s e r t o h o m e I live out of town. Can I get my cancer care closer to home? Whenever possible, LRCP works with our regional partners to provide your care closer to your home. The first visit with your doctor will be at LRCP so that a treatment plan can be made. If you are having chemotherapy closer to home, your first treatment will be given in London. While not all Chemotherapy is available in: Chatham Owen Sound Sarnia St. Thomas Stratford Wingham Woodstock 19
treatments are available in community cancer clinics, please remind your healthcare team if you are travelling to receive your chemotherapy and live near one of the centres noted above. All radiation therapy is given at LRCP. Will my care be the same if I get my chemotherapy at another site? Yes, absolutely. Your treatment plan is set by an LRCP oncologist. A doctor who is specially trained in cancer and a team of nurses will provide your treatment in your community hospital. R e s i d e n c e I n n b y M a r r i o t t There is no place like home, but the Residence Inn tries to be second best. The rooms are free of charge and a meal plan is available for a fee. In order to stay at the Residence Inn, you must: Live more than 40 km from London Be receiving cancer treatment at LRCP Be able to take care of yourself The Residence Inn is located 2 km from LRCP. A ride to and from LRCP is provided free of charge by shuttle bus. Please be sure to bring all of your own medicines. The Residence Inn does not supply any medicine for you. If you are planning to stay at the Residence Inn and need transportation to get there, a Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) volunteer driver may be able to give you with a ride. Please be sure to give CCS 3 business days notice. Are meals served at the Residence Inn? Weekly meal plans are available for a small fee. You can pay for your meal plan by cheque, cash, debit or credit card when you register at the Residence Inn. 20
Can a family member stay with me at the Residence Inn? Family members can stay at the Residence Inn when there is room available. Are there other places to stay in London? There are hotels that offer reduced rates to patients and their families. Contact Supportive Care at for a list of these hotels. Residence Inn or and click Accommodation for Out-of-Town Patients C a l l i n g L R C P Te l e p h o n e : Before you call LRCP, please have this information ready: Your name or the patient s name A phone number where you can be reached Your chart number The name of your nurse and oncologist My condition has changed. What do I do? If you are calling about symptoms or a change in your condition, you should call the Triage Nursing Line so they can assess your situation. Press 3 to reach the Triage Nursing Line. These lines are very busy. Please stay on the line until your call is answered. The Clinic Services and Triage Nursing Line phones are answered Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 21
Can I have my medicine reordered by phone? If you have a refill on your prescription and your prescription was filled at the LRCP Pharmacy, you can reorder your medicine by calling the LRCP Pharmacy at The LRCP Pharmacy is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. If you do not have refills left, you must call the Triage Nursing Line to order more. Medicine prescribed by your oncologist may take three business days to reorder. Please keep track of your medicines so that you do not run out. Please give your nurse 72 hours (3 days) to call the LRCP Pharmacy. Can a family member call on my behalf? To protect your privacy, we need your permission to speak to a family member about your care. If you wish to choose one family member as your spokesperson, please give us the name of the person. Who do I call if I need to change an appointment? You may need to change an appointment because of an unexpected illness, personal emergency or bad weather. If this happens, please call as soon as possible. Press 2 to change your appointment. O t h e r I n f o r m a t i o n Perfumes and scented products LRCP is a scent free environment. Many patients, visitors and staff are sensitive to fragrances. Please do not wear any perfumes, aftershaves or any other scented products when you are coming to LRCP. What if I feel like I m getting sick? Many of our patients have weakened immune systems. This means that they can get infections easily. If you are not feeling well or have a cough, please let the receptionist know. You may be asked to wear a mask during your visit. Any family members, friends or visitors who feel unwell should not come to LRCP. 22
Please wash your hands when you enter and leave the building. Each entrance has a hand washing station. Hand washing is a quick and easy way to fight the germs that cause infections. This is important for both patients and visitors. Smoking LRCP is a smoke free environment. If you want to smoke, you will have to go to the gazebo located outside the Level 1 entrance (radiation therapy), beside the parking garage. Latex allergies If you have a latex allergy or sensitivity, please tell a member of your healthcare team. As an extra precaution, please consider getting a "Medic Alert" identification product that lists your allergies. Food & drinks There is a Tim Horton s on the first floor of LRCP that is open from 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. There is also a Soup and Sandwich cart on Level 1 that is open from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Faye s Cafe is the hospital s main cafeteria. It is located on the third floor of the hospital (Zone D, Level 3). It serves salads, made-to-order sandwiches, pizza and other hot and cold foods. Simply Puur, also located on the third floor, is another option to buy food or a coffee (Zone B, Level 3). P a t i e n t a n d F a m i l y C e n t r e d C a r e Patient and Family Advisory Committee (PAFC) PFAC has a membership of patients, families members and health care providers. Their common goal is to improve the patient experience at 23
LRCP. Patient Advisors provide the patient voice on many councils and committees within LRCP. By sharing our stories, patients can support what is being done well and can provide opportunities for growth and change. Our experiences as patients remind health care teams what is important to patients and their families. As co-chairs, we are committed to supporting our patient advisors in their role within LRCP. We want to work in partnership with the health care team and continually improve the quality of the patient experience. Mim O Dowda & Elisa Agnelli Co-chairs of the Patient and Family Advisory Committee Partnership and Empowerment Patients, families and health care providers work together on: Policy and program development Professional education Research and evaluation Delivery of care Patients are empowered to participate in experiences to improve control and independence. Dignity and Respect Patient and family perspectives and choices are heard and respected. Patient and family knowledge, values, beliefs and cultural backgrounds are used in care planning and decision-making. Communication and Information Sharing Health care providers share information with patients and families in a clear, thorough, and timely way. This helps patients and families effectively participate in their care and decision-making. Patients and families also share essential and relevant information with members of their care team. Comprehensive and Coordinated Patients and families receive care that provides physical and emotional comfort. Patient and families experience care that has steady and smooth transitions. Patient Experience Vision I believe that involving patients and families raises the quality of care and reinforces the notion of a partnership in care as suggested by the expression, Nothing about me, without me. - Jim Conway, Ensuring Continuity of Care 24
