7 What's Ahead for Masonic Villages by Cindy Phillips, executive director Earlier this year, we spent considerable time on the development of strategic plans for each of the Masonic Village campuses. The retirement living, skilled nursing and personal care industries are changing rapidly, and while it is very difficult to plan too far into the future, we are being proactive in our preparation for the various shifts that will clearly impact us and our ability to sustain our Mission. This article is the first in a series where I will explain the changes likely to impact our campus and highlights of our strategic initiatives designed to both enable us to continue providing residents the care and lifestyle they deserve and to remain a leader among our peers. Congratulations! Starting with skilled nursing services, which includes the Transitional Care Unit (TCU) and therapy services, here are the key drivers of change: We are getting more complex residents to care for and many with severe, or multiple chronic conditions. Our challenge is while our residents' needs are rising, our reimbursements are decreasing. With labor as the largest cost component, managing overtime and payroll budgets will continue to be a priority in all departments. The greater emphasis on quality measures and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Star Rating is a reality today and in the future. We ve done a terrific job in the last 18 months achieving five stars in quality measures, and reaching four stars as an overall rating. This gives us leverage in important negotiations with hospital systems for higher bundled payments and shared savings programs. While overall occupancy in the Masonic Health Care Center is a stable 96-97%, we are seeing a decrease in our TCU occupancy. Why? Because hospitals are discharging 40% fewer patients to skilled nursing facilities and instead, sending them home. Additionally, Medicare Advantage plans and other insurance programs are pushing for shorter lengths of stay, so patients are being discharged almost 50% sooner. These trends are impacting staff in the TCU and therapy services, so we must find new ways to leverage our experienced staff and newly renovated therapy space. Another critical financial component of sustaining our Mission is payer mix. Currently almost 60% of our 453 nursing residents are on Medicaid. With our Medicaid reimbursement at about $250/day, our Masonic Health Care Center staff provided $15 million worth of free care in We ve always prided ourselves in doing this as part of our Mission, but with Managed Medicaid coming in , we expect that level of charitable care to reach unsustainable levels. Last, and most important, staff recruitment and retention continue to be a critical part of our future. We have done more hiring in the last two years than is normal for us. The available and qualified candidate pool is shrinking, and we are experiencing higher turnover in the first 12 months of employment. This is predicted to only get more difficult in the next decade, so our hiring process and how we welcome and orient new staff will be vital to our success. So what do the next few years look like? We are looking at strategies to ensure all Mission dollars are spent serving the core campus and our Masonicaffiliated community in the most cost effective way. Here are just a few things we will continue to examine for ways to prepare us for the changes above: Determine the right mix of traditional skilled nursing, TCU and memory care beds to serve our Mission Re-negotiate contracts with insurance payers to maximize revenue for skilled nursing stays Continue looking for ways to limit costs to the provide same quality care Shift our payer mix to a better balance of private pay vs. Medicaid to keep us financially able to provide our quality services to those who can no longer pay for them Aggressively work with hospital systems (Lancaster General Hospital, Hershey Medical Center, Pinnacle, Wellspan, Geisinger, etc.) and develop mutually beneficial partnerships to creatively work together and serve our communities It is not an easy path forward, but we are a strong team. We are an organization that gets ahead of the curve, and I have no doubt we will continue to adapt and find ways to sustain our Mission!

8 Simple Pleasures Warming the Soil through Culture Change will be a monthly segment in the Teambuilder, brought to you by the Culture Change Visionary Group. It will offer employees the opportunity to continue to learn and refresh their knowledge of creating a culture of aging that is life-affirming, satisfying, humane and meaningful. The principles of the Eden Alternative, along with other culture change viewpoints such as the Pioneer Network, will be the base from which information is shared. Dynamic and passionate individuals can, and often do initiate and achieve incredible changes in the organization (Management Aug 2017, p. 45). A way to affect change is through providing simple pleasures which make a difference. In the everyday hustle and bustle called work, we each have a unique opportunity presented to us. You may be asking, how or why? The answer is simple, and it is because we work with human beings whether it be a resident, a co-worker, a manager, a volunteer, a visitor, etc. Pleasure is defined as a feeling of happiness, enjoyment or satisfaction. Therefore, a simple pleasure is something or someone that causes a feeling of happiness, enjoyment or satisfaction. Question: Can a simple pleasure make us happier? Indeed they can, according to Gretchen Rubin, the author of The Happiness Project and Happier at Home. It s not life changes like a new house or a fancy car that makes the most impact, but sometimes little things like the smell of an orange, cool side of a pillow, favorite candy bar, puppy kisses or fresh air, etc., that gives the biggest happiness boost. Of course, simple pleasures aren t universal, so one person s pleasures won t necessarily bring the same boost of happiness to others. What are some of your simple pleasures? Do you know what some of your resident's or co-workers' simple pleasures are? Everyone in life prefers to feel happiness, enjoyment and satisfaction. Let s all learn our residents' and co-workers' simple pleasures and randomly deliver that simple pleasure during our work. Imagine you learn that a resident s simple pleasures is having a fresh tomato sandwich with Hellman s mayonnaise. Go the next step and bring them that tomato sandwich using a tomato from your garden and of course Hellman s mayonnaise. The Resident will feel happiness and enjoyment all because you gave them one of their simple pleasures in life. Workday 29 is Here! Upgrade Scheduled Unavailable Time Timeframe: Friday, Sept. 8 (late evening) Saturday, Sept. 9 (mid-day). During the upgrade timeframe, Workday may be unavailable. If you are unable to log into Workday, please try again at a later time. New User Experience For desktop computer users, Workday 29 brings a new look to your Worker profile! The information is now grouped similarly to how you view it in the Mobile App. Workday s goal is to provide a unified experience across all of the different ways you access your Workday information. Recovery Assistant This new feature will allow you to resume a task in the event you timed out or closed out of your Workday session (this is different than signing out). This is NOT an auto-save feature - if you entered any data in the Workday task, it is NOT guaranteed that the same information will be there when you return. In addition, it is not going to save every task you started. The Recovery Assistant should only be used as a helpful tool, and not as a replacement for doing the task correctly the first time. To use the Recovery Assistant, click on "Name (cloud icon)" in the upper-right. In the menu, look toward the bottom for "Recovery Assistant." Click on it to see where you can return to a previous task. Click on the task to return to it. Kronos Previously, you were asked to go to Workday to view your Paid Time Off. A completed Payroll run was necessary before you could see your updated balances. Now, the new Kronos system is able to provide an up-to-date Paid Time Off balance! Workday will only receive the balances from Kronos and show those balances. As it has been communicated before, please use Kronos to access your up-to-date information. Background Enhancements Workday is committed to making improvements and optimizations to make their product better for you the customer. Masonic Villages is committed to taking those improvements and optimizations and making them meaningful for our employee community. Most of the changes in Workday are not visible, but the Masonic Villages Workday Team is working on making those changes integrate seamlessly.
