Her current clinical work includes work with adolescents in a partial hospitalization program. Her clinical experiences have shaped her research interests in commercial sexual exploitation. Dr. Bounds research interests include exploring the phenomenon of sex trafficking, the psycho-neuro-immunological impact of complex trauma, and the link between trauma and juvenile justice. Dr. Bounds is a project director of a NIH funded intervention study focused on increasing the engagement of non-resident African American fathers in the Dr. Bounds (l) with faculty advisor Dr. Wrenetha Julion (r) lives of their children. Dr. Bounds teaches in Rush College of Nursing providing clinical supervision for psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner students. MFP ITI Page 5

7 MFP GRADUATE Class of Giovanna De Oliveira, PhD, NP-C, RN Twenty three years ago I landed alone in Detroit, Michigan, from my natal Peru. I left my parents and siblings without knowing what the future held for me. My English was limited back then, but my head was full of dreams and goals to achieve. Nursing was my passion since childhood, and after 15 years of clinical practice in various settings, I decided to further my knowledge and pursue a PhD in nursing in order to broaden my research experience. Now that this journey has come to an end, I would like to thank the Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) for the opportunity it gave me to fulfill these dreams, funding my PhD studies in part, as well as my certification in psychiatric mental health nursing. The MFP has provided me with financial support and an invaluable educational assistance and guidance through its professional network. I am now looking forward to serve the mental health needs of minority populations and enhance their well-being. I will be forever grateful to all the institutions and people who made my journey possible, especially to my MFP family! Dr. De Oliveira defended her dissertation on June 27, 2015, which focused on analyzing the social determinants of major depressive disorder among Dr. Giovanna De Oliveira (r) walking in with peers during commencement Hispanic women, as well as investigating the possible mediating effects that depression may have in the relationship between social determinants of health and engagement in health promotion behaviors. Dr. De Oliveira has several years of clinical work experience in psychiatric nursing. She worked as a charge nurse on a gerontological-psychiatric floor at long-term care facilities in Detroit for three years. Once she became a nurse practitioner, she worked with a psychiatrist mentor, with whom she trained in Houston, Texas. She assisted with psychiatric in-patient consultations at several Houston hospitals, where she held privileges. Most recently, she taught nursing clinical rotations in mental health for the University of Miami. She is a member of the American Nurses Association, American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Sigma Theta Tau, among other nursing organizations. MFP ITI Page 6

8 MFP GRADUATE Class of Class of 2014 Shaquita Starks, PhD, APRN, MSN, FNP-BC, successfully defended her dissertation, titled Predictors of Psychological - Spiritual Well-Being in African American Women Caring for Persons with End Stage Renal Disease, on January 29, 2016 at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis, TN. Dr. Starks pointed out that it s been a long and tumultuous road, but I have endured and persevered. Additionally, she stated I didn t know what to expect, so I sought advice from the MFP Executive Program Consultant, Freida Hopkins Outlaw, PhD, RN, MSN, FAAN and MFP Statistician and Program Evaluator, Hossein Yarandi, PhD, who gave me sound advice that helped ease my tension. I bugged Dr. Yarandi to death, and he was so kind, patient, and helpful and explained everything to me. Committee members were very impressed with my statistical analysis and indicated that I had done an excellent job. Moreover, Dr. Starks explained that the financial assistance I received from the MFP enabled me to take the time I needed to research and prepare for my defense. Committee member Zandria F. Robinson, PhD, added that Dr. Starks is an extraordinary example of perseverance, and she is poised to expand how we study race, gender, and health. Before starting her defense, Dr. Starks faculty advisor, Dr. Mona Wicks, gave her a quote to read which stated, Understand that the right to choose your own path is a sacred privilege. Use it. Dwell in the possibility. Dr. Starks standing adjacent to dissertation presentation MFP ITI Page 7
