1 Salary and Demographic Survey Results

2 Executive Summary In July of 2010, Grant Professionals Association (GPA formerly AAGP) conducted a salary and demographic survey of grant professionals. The survey was distributed to all active GPA members and posted to the GPA website; 370 responses were received. This response rate is helpful in generalizing the results of the survey to the population of grant professionals as a whole, as well as guarding the results from statistical anomalies, making the results more accurate. This is the fifth annual survey of its kind. The 2010 survey was expanded to collect more information on the demographics of grant professionals as well as data on proposals funded versus proposals written. New data points and a strong response rate provide answers to the question, Who is a typical grant professional? Earns $60,297 per year as a full-time employee and receives benefits (96%) with a value of about $9,075 per year Feels very well (17%) or fairly (53%) compensated for the work s/he performs Writes about 17 grant proposals a year, of which 13 are funded States that s/he has a funding success rate of 60% Female (85%), between 45 and 54 years old (29%), White (91%), and Not Hispanic or Latino (97%) Holds a Bachelor s Degree (33%) in Business (13%), English (10%), Education (7%), Psychology (10%), Political Science (2%), Journalism (9%), or Sociology (8%). Holds a Graduate or Professional Degree (60%) A Grant coordinator (proposal development and grants/project/fiscal management 33%) or a Grant Proposal Writer (29%) Full-time employed in a job where all or most of his/her functions are related to grants (67%) Works in an Urban Area (61%) Has been in the grants field for 5-10 years (31%) and considers him or herself advanced with regard to skill level (59%) Works for a nonprofit agency (27%), higher education (15%), government agency (14%), or Hospital/Healthcare (13%) Works for a very well-established (89%) medium sized agency (45%) that employs approximately 1,875 Fulltime Equivalents (FTEs) with an annual operating budget of more than $20 million (53%), of which less than 25% is comprised of grant funds (73%) Concentrates on writing proposals to private foundations (36%), the Federal government (27%), local governments (8%) and state governments (19%) i

3 Additional key finding are: Most grant consultants (84%) felt adequately compensated for the work they performed, and many (69%) reported having a greater income as grant professional consultants than as employees. There were no significant differences in salary by ethnicity. While there was a difference by race ($66,400 Asian, $67,253 Black or African-American, and $63,347 White), it is noted that there were only 3 Asian and 13 Black or African- American survey respondents, compared to 240 white respondents. There are strong positive correlations between salary and age, years of experience, skill level, size of organization, and degree of establishment of organization. There are no apparent correlations between salary and individual s proposal success rate or the percentage of an organization s annual operating budget that is comprised of grants. There are no apparent correlations between success rate and skill level. There are no strong correlations between proposal success rates and years in the grants field. There are no significant changes between the results from last year to this year. ii

25 Continued from last page # of Comments Nature of Comment Response Would like to know how many staff work in each individual's grants department. Is there a correlation between the types of grants sought (i.e. difficulty/complexity) and the rate of pay for grants professionals? Would like to have information on what percentage of time do individuals spend writing grants, managing grants, coordinating projects, doing other fundraising work, and doing administrative work. Would like to know how many individuals are involved with their local GPA Chapter. Would like to know how many grant professionals have their employers pay for their GPA membership and/or conferences. Would like to know the annual salary and not the hourly wage for part-time grant employee positions. Please refer to other associations (AFP) Salary Surveys. Would like to know what type of bonus or pay for performance structure others are receiving. Would like GPA to have two separate surveys: One for those employed as a grant writer and one for consultants. Look for these additions to possibly be on the 2011 Salary Survey! 26 Continued from last page # of Comments Nature of Comment Response Would like to know the percentage of grants written to County agencies. What are the salary ranges for Corporate & Foundation Relations / Major Gift officers and other grant professionals that also handle the grant giving side? Would like to at least know an approximation or range of consultant's hourly rates or salary. Add South or Mid-South to the Region question. This suggestion will be taken into consideration for the 2011 Salary Survey. Look for questions pertaining individuals that handle the grant giving side and their salary on next year s survey! If we can legally provide this information, it will be included in the 2011 Salary Survey. Look for these additions to the 2011 Salary Survey! Cross-Tabulations: Salary Cross-tabulations were performed with Question 26 (i.e., IF you are working FULL-TIME as a grants professional as an EMPLOYEE, in what range does your ANNUAL salary fall?). Ranges were converted into a midpoint figure. For example, if a respondent selected the range $20,000 to $25,000, the midpoint of $22,500 was used to calculate average salaries. Limits of the survey administration software prevent cross-tabulations by the actual annual salaries reported in Question 25 or the hourly wages reported in Question 29.
