3 Three New Close To Home SM Centers Spotlight told you about the new Canal Winchester Close To Home SM Center last month. Our network is growing - these three sites opened this summer. 10 locations and growing! After four days with a high fever, Benjamin Rubinow s parents had a bad feeling about their son s condition and brought Ben into urgent care at the Westerville Close To Home SM Center. Ben s doctor suspected there was more to his illness than the average flu and consulted with specialists at the main hospital. A short while later, Ben arrived at Nationwide Children s Hospital to find a well-informed staff waiting for him. By going to a Nationwide Children s Close To Home SM Center, Ben had a well-connected pediatric-focused team working to his advantage. Today, 10 Nationwide Children s Close To Home SM Centers bring a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for newborns, children and young adults closer to families like Ben s. Expansion of the Close To Home SM network is based on the needs of local communities, demand for service and growth in child population. Close To Home SM Center services may include: urgent care, laboratory (ChildLab), radiology, behavioral health, nutrition services, occupational/physical therapy, sports medicine, speech and language pathology, electrocardiogram testing (EKG), and electroencephalogram testing (EEG). snot. Downtown, Dublin, Westerville, East Columbus You should always call your child s pediatrician or family doctor first. For hours and directions visit Three words that grab your attention. These are also words commonly used by today s parents to describe their children s ailments to pediatricians and our staff of pediatric experts at Nationwide Children s Hospital. The hospital s new Urgent Care awareness campaign was developed with parents in mind. During community focus groups and discussions, parents, pediatricians and family doctors shared with us the realities of raising children today and unfortunately, their frequently faced ailments. This campaign reflects their every-day story. The Snot, Vomit and Ouchies campaign began hitting our local market in mid-july via print advertisements, billboards, direct mail postcards and web ( UrgentCare). The goals of this campaign are to let parents know we are here, we are the right choice for their child and we work with their child s pediatrician or primary care physician. August

Family Care Team Walk Rounds include the family as an essential part in the patient s daily medical review. Everyday, the patient s care team meets in his or her room, or outside the door, to discuss general medical condition, a probable diagnosis or treatment options. The goal is to encourage families to take advantage of the opportunity to interact with the team, ask questions and gain information on their child s condition and care. In order to provide the best possible care for the patient and their family, it s important that the family be included in the decision-making process. patient satisfaction scores: 2Q 2009 s second quarter patient satisfaction score results :: The Emergency Department (ED) exceeded their 2009 goal in the second quarter, hitting the 90 th percentile, an increase of 48 percent from last quarter. :: Inpatient had an overall mean score of 86.8, putting them in the 56 th percentile. 5 new study shows importance of mom s nutrition in preventing obesity in kids It is estimated that nearly 40 percent of kids in the United States are considered overweight or obese. Much research has been dedicated to finding new ways to lower that number and doctors at Nationwide Children s Hospital may have evidence of a new and effective approach. A team of doctors from the Ambulatory Department at Nationwide Children s Hospital studied nearly 300 motherchild pairs over the child s first year of life to determine not only the nutritional component of preventing obesity in young children, but also the impact of the mother s behavior on the children s weight. The research shows how mom eats may play a bigger role in her children s health than previously thought. Traditionally, nutrition is just one of many topics that pediatricians discuss with parents during routine wellchild visits. In this new research, led by Judith Groner, MD, a physician at Nationwide Children s Hospital, there is evidence that by focusing the attention to mom and teaching her how to eat properly, the kids were more likely to adapt to healthy eating behaviors. The study divided the participants into three groups that determined which type of nutritional information they received: Ounce of Prevention, Maternal-Focused and Bright Futures. Ounce of Prevention focused on the types and amounts of foods that children should receive and at what age they should be introduced. The Maternal-Focused group strived to improve the mothers eating habits in hopes of reaching the entire family. Bright Futures is the most widely accepted program by the American Academy of Pediatrics and incorporated nutritional information into a wide variety of topics being addressed. The year-long study found that the most successful model is the Maternal-Focused model s approach of targeting mom as an agent of change in the family. The mothers self-reported a decrease in the amount of juice the children consumed and the amount of time spent watching television, as well as an increase in the amounts of fruits consumed. The idea was that during the first year of life, repeatedly give mom advice on how she ate at the well-child visits, said Dr. Groner, who is also a clinical professor of pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. It s our hope by seeing what mom does, that down the road, the children would start to eat more organized meals, plan snacks and have less of this constant grazing all the time that can lead to obesity. The importance, according to Dr. Groner, is not necessarily on what mom is eating, but instead on when she eats. By organizing set meal times and eliminating snacking throughout the day, kids observe mom and learn the importance of well-planned and nutritionally balanced meals. 6 nurturing your newborn Nationwide Children s Hospital is offering free infant massage classes. The classes provide an opportunity for parents to nurture and relax their baby, while forming a deeper parentchild relationship. Classes run for about an hour, giving the baby adequate time to adjust to the parent s touch and techniques. Baby Benefits Infant massage allows babies to spend more time active and alert. However, if they fall asleep, the massage transitions them into deep sleep and relaxation. It also creates a bond between the parent and baby and the baby s attachment will grow stronger. Parent Benefits Infant massage allows parents to be more comfortable with the baby and responsive to their nonverbal signs. It can also ease the stress of being away from the baby while at work. Parents can relax while strengthening the bond between parent and child. Interested in learning more? Contact the Family Resource Center at (614) the cool kids The NICU is creating some cool kids and it has nothing to do with popularity. Whole body hypothermia is now being used to treat hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE,) a brain injury caused by a complete or partial lack of blood flow, oxygen and glucose. HIE potentially affects 4,000 to 8,000 infants every year in the United States and causes increased risks of death or severe disabilities including seizures, movement disorders, cerebral palsy, hearing deficits and cognitive delays. A brief window of opportunity exists between two and six hours of age. If hypothermic therapy can be started during this timeframe, the low body temperature will allow the patient to conserve energy and slow the damage to cells. This decreases the chances for death and severe developmental disability. The challenge is in reaching these babies within their first hours of life, said Balinda Schluer, RN, BSN, PNCCT. When a referring physician alerts Nationwide Children s NICU, the Transport Team departs immediately by ground transport or helicopter in order to arrive within 6 hours of life. The team aims to maintain a temperature of 33.5 C while enroute and once the baby arrives, whole-body cooling begins with cooling blankets for 72 hours. 6. August 2009
7 blood conservation program Providing family-centered care means taking into account the beliefs and values of the patient s family. For Jehovah s Witness patients who do not wish to receive blood transfusions, Nationwide Children s comprehensive approach to bloodless procedures offers safe and effective medical care that doesn t conflict with their religion. Started in 1995 by Terry Davis, MD, the Blood Conservation Program is now under the direction of Jill Fitch, MD. Educating staff on the importance of blood conservation will be a top priority of the program for three reasons: blood supplies are inadequate, screening is not completely effective and blood storage is not ideal. Interested in learning more about the Jehovah s Witness faith? Attend the one hour Culturally Effective Pediatric Care: Jehovah s Witness and Blood Conservation seminar in Stecker Auditorium on the following dates: >> Jill Fitch, MD My goals are to minimize blood loss in point-of-care testing, reevaluate transfusion practices and work closely with the Jehovah Witness community, said Dr. Fitch. It s my hope that a dedicated group will emerge to help organize and deliver care in the spirit of blood conservation. Tuesday, August 11 at 7 a.m. Tuesday, August 11 at noon Monday, August 24 at 5:30 p.m. don t forget to enroll! Before you know it, Human Resources will be asking staff to reenroll for health benefits. While quite possibly not the most exciting thing on your November to do list think football and turkey this is by far the most important! Interested in getting involved or leaning more about the program? Contact Dr. Jill Fitch at Jill.Fitch@NationwideChildrens.org. FACT: Did you know a good benefits package health coverage, retirement plans and life insurance could be worth at least one-third of your salary? Employees who take the time to investigate their benefits options have the potential to save money and enjoy better perks from their coverage. Take some time to evaluate how your current plan worked for you this past year and any changes you might consider. If you think you won t make any changes to your elections, still take some time to review as the benefit plans may have changed. FACT: The average person spends more time shopping for a single pair of shoes than they do for their annual benefits. Moral of the story? Don t be the guy who has to drive into work the night before the deadline just to login to the Intranet to enroll there s one in every department! Visit the Human Resources page on the Intranet and checkout the Benefits Homepage ahead of time. August
