The research-based approach will also offer an insight into the research process and how knowledge can be derived and applied. Content outline You will be exploring several pathological processes, and how these affect the individual. You are expected to have a sound understanding of normal human physiology before commencing this module. There will be online assessment material available and you are strongly recommended to use this to enable you assess your knowledge in the biological sciences

2 WHAT WILL I BE EXPECTED TO ACHIEVE? On successful completion of this module, you will be expected to be able to: Knowledge and understanding Discuss the contribution of environmental and genetic causes of disease Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of pathological processes associated with: Developmental physiology: embryology; ageing and climacteric Regulation of cell growth and replication: repair and regeneration, apoptosis, growth Cellular response to injury and healing: Inflammation, hypoxia, ischaemia, radiation, infarction and embolism Immunity and metabolism of toxic substances Pain Skills Critically apply knowledge of clinical tests (including imaging methods); the nature of the information they yield and their limitations. Demonstrate competence in conducting screening tests. Provide sound nutritional advice. Demonstrate a sophisticated grasp of units of measurement and work with accuracy and precision. Critically apply your understanding of pathology to problems clients experience. Values and attitudes Evaluate the scientific method, and its application to clinical care Demonstrate an appreciation of the causes of disease

3 HOW WILL I LEARN? The content is organised into seven weekly study days: each day will consist of several lectures, with all students, followed by seminars discussing programme specific material. Students will also receive guidance about what they should study before and after each study day. 4 WHAT TYPES OF ASSESSMENT AND FEEDBACK CAN I EXPECT? Assessments Overview of assessment methods used, including proportion of coursework/written Assessment pattern: Assessment component Assessment type Weighting Minimum qualifying mark 25% You are required to gain an aggregate of 50% Invigilated exam Multiple choice no questions Invigilated exam Short essays 75% no Pass/Fail? Assessment criteria The assessment will comprise an invigilated, two hour examination exploring all aspects of the course. There will be two sections in this 1. One section of 30 compulsory multiple choice questions testing,recall and advanced application oftesting factual knowledge and understanding 2. One section requiring short longer, essays type questions. These questions will be specific to the programme you are on, and will offer choice as to which question to attempt. The mark from the two sections will be combined to derive a final mark. All candidates will receive written feedback on their performance, as well as their mark, within four weeks of undertaking the assessment. Any minimum qualifying marks for specific assessments are listed in the table above. The weighting of the different components can also be found above.
