1 MODULE SPECIFICATION POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES KEY FACTS Module name Asthma & Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Module code NMM048 School School of Health Sciences Department or equivalent Division of Nursing UK credits 15 ECTS 7.5 Level 7 MODULE SUMMARY Module outline and aims Respiratory disease is responsible for much acute and chronic ill health. It is the single most common reason why people consult their general practitioner and accounts for a substantial number of acute hospital admissions. There is a high incidence of both asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease [COPD] within East London and there are specialist asthma and COPD clinics run within primary and secondary care. The British Thoracic Society asthma and COPD guidelines clearly identify the need for educational programmes to facilitate the implementation of evidence-based guidelines. Local educational needs were identified by an inter-professional group with representation from primary and secondary care. The module aims to influence and change respiratory practice in relation to asthma and COPD by increasing knowledge, expertise and practical skills. Content outline Summary of taught content: Overview of respiratory physiology Obstructive lung disease pathophysiology Asthma and COPD background and guidelines Writing a protocol for practice Assessment and diagnosis in chronic respiratory disease Pulmonary function tests and spirometry Pharmacological treatments in asthma and COPD Oxygen therapy and non-invasive ventilation Self-management strategies Pulmonary rehabilitation Smoking cessation

2 WHAT WILL I BE EXPECTED TO ACHIEVE? On successful completion of this module, you will be expected to be able to: Knowledge and understanding: Skills: Demonstrate in depth knowledge of pharmacology and disordered pathophysiology in clinical decision making Critically examine and evaluate knowledge of evidence-based guidelines in relation to asthma and COPD care Critically evaluate and justify strategies to promote self-management and adherence Critically evaluate and apply acquired assessment skills and critically demonstrate the ability to influence patient outcomes Critically evaluate and appraise the most effective way of promoting an interprofessional approach to asthma and COPD care Values and attitudes: Critically evaluate and assess the psychological and social impact of chronic illness upon the individual, their family and significant others. HOW WILL I LEARN? 3 WHAT TYPES OF ASSESSMENT AND FEEDBACK CAN I EXPECT? Assessments This assessment provides you with an opportunity to develop a protocol appropriate to an area of practice on a chosen aspect of care. The supporting paper enables you to highlight issues related to developing the protocol and discuss the impact this protocol will have on patient care. Assessment pattern: Assessment component Protocol with 2000 word supporting paper Assessment type Weighting Minimum qualifying mark Written assignment, including essay 100% 50% N/A Pass/Fail? Assessment criteria Marks will be awarded for: A clear and logically presented paper Accurate use of references using a recognised referencing system Succinctly outlining your choice of area for protocol with relevant issues Critically evaluating your choice of content in the protocol drawing upon recent literature Critically evaluating the implications of implementing this into your practice Feedback on assessment Following the assessment, you will be given your marks and feedback in line with the Assessment Regulations and Policy. More information on the timing and type of feedback that will be provided for each assessment will be available from the Module Leader at the start of the module. Assessment Regulations The Pass mark for the module is 50%. Any minimum qualifying marks for specific assessments are listed in the table above.
