Position purpose The role of the Dietitian is to provide expert dietetic advice to people living with diabetes and their family and friends via means such as Diabetes Victoria s telephone counselling service, group education programs and written media. Dietitians also participate in resource development, health professional education, and project work both within the organisation and with external collaborators. Dietitians work at the Children s Diabetes Camps organised by a consortium of Diabetes Victoria, Royal Children s Hospital and Monash Children s Hospital. This position plays an integral role in the delivery of provisions (products, programs and services) for National Diabetes Services Scheme Registrants, as funded and contractually agreed between the Commonwealth government and Diabetes Australia. B. Business Unit / Departmental Purpose The purpose of Diabetes Victoria s Diabetes Education Department is to support and empower people in the selfmanagement of their diabetes and to ensure the community has access to informed and educated health professionals for their diabetes. Consumer education programs and telephone advice, a comprehensive health professional education program, individual advocacy, and programs for people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (A&TSI) communities are key services. Diabetes Victoria is the national coordinating center for the OzDAFNE program, a five day structured education program for people with type 1 diabetes. Our team of RN-credentialed diabetes educators (CDEs) and accredited practicing dietitians (APD) provide DAFNE courses, health professional education and accreditation related to the DAFNE program. C. Key accountabilities KEY RESULT AREAS (KRAs) The key measurable outputs or deliverables required of the position. 1. Consumer information and support TASKS The main activities required to achieve a KRA. Provide accurate and efficient diabetes education and support to consumers, by responding to enquiries via telephone, , face to face or internet Record an accurate account of the education and advice provided and actions taken Where appropriate, ensure the consumer is made aware of additional services both KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIs) The quantitative/qualitative evidence used to measure how well the KRAs have been achieved. Callers are responded to within 24 hours or the next business day Notes of correspondence are recorded accurately Written and verbal communication is professional, articulate, correct and at the appropriate level of understanding for the consumer support empower campaign Page 1 of 5
2 2. Education, training and community engagement 3. Project/program development and implementation 4. Professional practice and development within Diabetes Victoria and in the community Develop and update written resources (e.g. information sheets, articles, publications, website content) and make recommendations for content changes of current information and resources Contribute to health writing which is accessible for all consumers Provide appropriate material for various media Deliver quality education programs for Diabetes Victoria as required Provide expert group education to people with diabetes, their families and carers Provide expert training to health professionals and support workers Provide supervision and training to students as required Attend and present at community events as required Demonstrate best practice, appropriate teaching/education methods and make use of appropriate resources in the education process Maintain current resources Plan and carry out designated project work Assist with submissions for funding Ensure own professional development and knowledge of diabetes is up to date to maintain APD status Maintain and develop professional expertise relevant to the position through participation in recognised and appropriate courses, conferences and self-study activities Participate in internal peer review process Participate in in-service training organised by Diabetes Victoria A minimum of three pieces of writing is produced per year which fulfils the required brief and conveys the desired message clearly, logically and accurately Writing is of the appropriate literacy level Current, evidence based information is delivered Lead a minimum of 3 group education or community education sessions per year Lead a minimum of 2 health professional/ support worker training sessions per year Projects are planned using the Diabetes Victoria project planning templates Projects are satisfactorily completed within agreed timeframes Relevant diabetes-related dietetic CPD hours are achieved Complete one on call peer review and one group education peer review yearly and document Completes all mandatory compliance training 5. Diabetes children s camps Attend camp and training session/s Ensure appropriate training is delivered to staff and volunteers prior to camps Ensure appropriate menus are developed and food options provided Participate in at least one diabetes camp every 2 years as required support empower campaign Page 2 of 5

Evaluation and reporting Participate in quality improvement activities Contribute to reporting as required Evaluation is a regular activity The Continuous Improvement form is used when required Programs are evaluated and meet the needs of participants, and are reviewed/revised as required D.
