3 Office hours Monday through Thursday 10:30-11:30 Course Description: This course provides students with a sound knowledge of genetics and genomics essential for health care providers in evaluating needs of patients and delivering of care to patients and families. The course prepares nursing students by reinforcing the basic principles of genetics while exploring new advances and discussing how these advances will affect health The course focuses on the relationships of genetics and genomics to health, prevention, screening, diagnostics, prognostics, selection of treatment, and monitoring of treatment effectiveness. Genomic influences on complex health problems, chromosomal and mitochondrial diseases, enzyme and collagen disorders, childhood onset disorders, adult onset disorders, psychiatric and behavioral disorders and cancer will be covered. Understand and integrate basic aspects of genetics and genomics to plan, coordinate patient centered care 2. Plagiarism is the action or practice of taking someone else's work, idea, etc., and passing it off as one's own. Plagiarism is literary theft. In your discussions and/or your papers, it is unacceptable to copy word for word without quotation marks and the source of the quotation. We use the APA Style Manual of the American Psychological Association as a guide for all writing assignments. Quotes should be used sparingly. It is expected that you will summarize or paraphrase ideas giving appropriate credit to the source both in the body of your paper and the

9 reference list. Papers are subject to be evaluated for originality via Bb Safe Assignment or Turnitin. Resources to help you understand this policy better are available at the ASU Writing Center Below is an example how points will be deducted due to issues related to plagiarism. <10% similarity /no points will be deducted as long as the majority of the homology lies within references. If the majority of the identified homology lies within one particular article s content, 10 points will be deducted. For anything greater than 10%, I will deduct the percent similarity from final paper grade. For instance if the paper has 43 % homology and 36% of that homology comes from material online excluding references, 36 points will be deducted from the final paper grade. Course Methods: A variety of strategies may be employed to enhance skills in Pathophysiology including review of case studies and the analysis of evidence based journal articles. The primary method of instruction is through classroom discussion and will focus on 1) basic cellular alterations (pathological processes, diagnosis, manifestations), 2) contributions to the topic relative a genomics focus and 3) general knowledge regarding treatment modalities. Both individual work as well as group activity will be stressed. Polices related to this course: All students are required to follow the policies and procedures presented in the Angelo State University Undergraduate Nursing Handbook, located on the Nursing website Testing: Access to exams will be through Respondus TM Lockdown Browser and will be video recorded via Respondus Monitor. To prepare for testing using Respondus TM Monitor, see Respondus Monitor Help under the Resources tab for the course in blackboard. There are two practice quizzes: a) one is a Webcam test and b ) a short 10 questions practice quiz over ASU trivia that is not graded. These tools will be available to the student to assure accessibility. Students are highly encouraged to go through these practice quizzes in advance of taking a graded exam. This process will allow you to become familiar with the technology associated with testing and improve testing environment. There are readings which you will have to complete to be able to adequately participate in individual and group assessments. IN order to complete this course successfully you will have to participate in all activities, ie discussion boards, course projects, etc. Students are expected to engage in course activities fully and submit work by due date and time provide. The hope is that students will make substantive contributions which reflect integration of assigned materials as well as any outside readings as appropriate. Scholarly contribution is an expectation. Homework policy: All work must be turned in on the specified due date. Most of the time the homework will be submitted to assignment links in blackboard. I will announce through blackboard any deviation from this practice. Homework is assigned well in advance of a due date. Since most of the assignments are submitted through blackboard there should be very few reasons that justify late submissions. Late homework policy: For every class day that an assignment is late, 20 points will be deducted from earned grade. If I receive an from you prior to missing class, and an assignment was due to be turned into class as opposed to submission to blackboard, you will be allowed the next class date or Friday of the week you missed class to get the assignment turned in. COMMUNICATION Faculty will respond to and/or telephone messages within 24 hours during working hours Monday through Friday. Weekend messages may not be returned until Monday although reasonable attempt will be made to accommodate learning during this time.
