This course prepares the student to use the nursing process in the patient-centered care of persons experiencing stressors to their mental health. Topics include anxiety, depression, alteration in mental status, and developmental disorders affecting cognitive and psychological development. The emphasis is on using evidenced based data to guide clinical practice. The patient s developmental stage and individual needs are assessed and incorporated into the plan of care which is devised to support and strengthen the adaptive response of the patient. In addition, a cursory overview of complex mental disorders such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and dementia is included. The role and competencies of the professional vocational nurse as they relate to caring, safety, patient advocacy, and teaching are applied to the mental health patient within the context of the health-care team.

2 Course Objectives Following completion of this course the student will be able to: 1. Develop a patient-centered care plan, using the nursing process, for the patient experiencing stressors to their mental health. 2. Describe the impact of specified mental health disorders on the patient s developmental functioning and needs. 3. Create a teaching plan, for the patient and family, centered on health promotion and risk reduction that is congruent with the patient s developmental and mental health functioning. 4. Describe the physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacotherapy, and management of specified mental health disorders. 5. Associate pertinent competencies to the patient-centered care of an individual experiencing stressors to their mental health. 6. Discuss professional nurse role behaviors, to include caring, safety, and advocacy, as they relate to the patient-centered care of the mental health patient within the context of the health-care team. The course grade will be calculated as follows: Examinations (4) % Assignment (2) % a) Group project10% b) Forum % Final Examination % Total 100% GRADING SYSTEM = A = B = C* = D* Below 60 = F A MINIMUM COURSE GRADE OF 75% MUST BE ACHIEVED IN ALL VOCATIONAL NURSING COURSES FOR THE STUDENT TO PASS. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS. ANY COURSE GRADE BELOW 75% MUST BE REPEATED FOR NURSING CREDIT. FINAL GRADES AND UNIT EXAM GRADES WILL NOT BE ROUNDED.

If sounds from an electronic device (phones/pagers, etc.) occur, the student will be asked to leave the class or computer lab for the remainder of the class/testing session and absent time will be accumulated. If a dismissal occurs from the computer lab during testing the grade at time of dismissal will be recorded as zero (0). 2. Do not bring books, backpacks, roller carts, purses and electronic devices into computer lab on scheduled test and review dates. One entry into the review is allowed. Students who re-enter exams and/or reviews are subject to disciplinary action as defined by the Department Chair. There will be no rounding of grades. No additional points will be given on any exam. A test question which is deemed controversial will be deleted and the test will be graded on the number of test items remaining after said question is removed.
