It is organized around four themes selected to encourage the application of selected theoretical frameworks to clinical practice, leading nurses, and developing more effective healthcare systems. It complements NURS 501: Foundations of Advanced Practice and provides theoretical foundations relevant to all the tracks in the MSN program. The process of personal inquiry guides learning in the course. The course is structured around four organizing themes. 1. Fundamentals including conceptions of science, nursing knowledge, and levels of abstraction. 2. Interdisciplinary theories relevant to nurses and nursing. 3. The politics of health including the role of nurses in policy making and system reform. 4. Implications for advancing practice, research, leadership, and system reform. The four themes are integrated as well as presented sequentially. The course assists participants to develop and demonstrate the competencies required for graduate studies and offers a foundation for more advanced study of the theoretical foundations of nursing and healthcare. 2 LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: 1. Explain why the status of nursing knowledge is in question 2. Identify the theoretical antecedents of selected theories used in nursing and related social and behavioral science disciplines 3. Examine the application of middle range theories in health promotion, behavioral change, family functioning, health maintenance 4. Use selected economic, political and ethical theories to analyze healthcare delivery 5. Describe the relationship between philosophical perspectives, notions of science, and conceptions of nursing knowledge 6. Demonstrate application of a selected theory to the care of a patient, the organization of advanced nursing practice, education, administration, policy development, or research. The course will encourage you to develop learning skills to apply throughout the Master of Science in Nursing Program. By the end of the course you will be able to: Search for evidenced-based literature Export references to Endnote Compile a reference list in APA format Use in-text references correctly Access resources to further develop your writing skills Use Turnitin to check that you have cited your sources TEACHING METHODS: - Facilitation of personal inquiry - Close reading of set texts - Application of selected concepts, theories and frameworks - Reflection on personal nursing practice LEARNING ASSESSMENT: - Course participation: 10 % - Introduction of a seminar topic 40% - Written paper demonstrating personal inquiry 50% POLICIES: 1. All course requirements must be completed by student before grades are submitted for credit. 2. Students who miss over one fifth of lecture hours will be asked to drop the course. 3. The passing grade for this course is 70.

CLASS PARTICIPATION (10% of Course Grade) Evidence of prior reading during classroom discussions (5%) Evidence-based posts to on-line course forum (videos, PowerPoint Presentations, research articles, personal commentaries, or initiation of discussion themes that engage other participants in discussion, debate, or collaboration. (5%) INTRODUCTION OF A SEMINAR TOPIC (40% of Course Grade) Individual Presentation (40% of course grade): After reading at least one chapter on nursing theory in the course textbook, select one theory to look up on the University of San Diego website. Select the theory that best offers opportunities to rethink and add value to the care of the patient described in the case study of one of your group members. Select the case study that presents the most challenges. Prepare to present on one of the following days: 16th November or 30 th November. Two Each presentation should be not more than 40 minutes followed by 10 minutes of questions. In your presentation: 1. Identify your chosen nursing theory and explain why you selected it. 2. Explain the main concepts in the theory and the relationship between them. 3. Show how the theory could be applied to the patient in your case study. 4. Summarize the advantages and advantages of using the theory to address the needs of the patient in your case study.

4 PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT: GUIDELINES FOR WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT (50% of Course Grade) To demonstrate competence in applying theory to practice provide a personal synthesis of seminar material considered in the course that has potential to enhance your advanced practice role. You will find this assignment easier to write if you start in the first or second week of the course and update your paper from week to week in light of your reading and classroom discussions. Please use your assignment to show how you have applied the personal inquiry process, introduced in the first session and posted on MOODLE, to develop a theoretically informed approach to a selected aspect of advanced practice. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS: Write an account of using the personal inquiry process to show the place of theory in the development of advanced nursing practice. Maximum length: 2000 words, including a case study of not more than 500 words, presented in APA format in double spaced typewritten pages. The final paper is due on 14th December, SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: 1. Introduction (5%) Provide an overview of what will be covered and indicate the conclusion to be drawn from your case study of the application of a theory to nursing practice (nursing practice includes: clinical nursing, community and public health nursing, nursing leadership, nursing administration, nurse education, professional development, empirical research, scholarship). Justify your choice of theory with reference to nursing and health priorities in Lebanon. 2. Experience (10%): Describe an initial brief clinical case study (500 words, please see instructions below). 3. Applicability (5%): Explain how a selected theory has added to your understanding of your case study. 4. Deliberation (10%): Justify your choice of theory with reference to:

5 Two recently published research articles (research published in the past months). 5% Explanation of the relationship between the theory and a nursing model or framework described on the University of San Diego Nursing Theory webpage 5. Action (15%): Specify how you have used or could use your theoretically informed insights to enhance advanced practice outcomes. 6. For a user friendly guide to complying with APA format requirements, access and bookmark the following URL: GUIDELINES FOR CASE STUDY (500 words) Provide a description of the patient (pseudonym, age, gender, occupation, relevant medical and nursing history) and any significant others (spouse, children, other members of the household), reason for admission, diagnosis, initial treatment, current health status, current treatments, nursing management and interventions, prognosis. Include a summary of the current nursing care plan with reference to diagnoses, standard protocols, individual needs, family involvement, expected outcomes and any areas of concern or unresolved health needs. Use a nursing theory of your choice to structure this information. Alternatively (500 words) Provide a description of a challenging event that has occurred in your work setting in the past 12 months: an ethical dilemma, a misunderstanding between colleagues, the introduction of a new policy or procedure, an organizational imperative, the publication of a new research article relevant to your practice, a successful leadership intervention. Describe what occurred, identify the stakeholders involved (be sure to protect anonymity), the challenges you experienced, and how you responded to them. Use a theory of your choice to structure this information.

6 FURTHER READING One or more selected research articles directly relevant to the topic of the week and published in the past year will be uploaded on the MOODLE course page. Please use the link provided on the MOODLE page to upload articles or materials you have found. Participants who refer to these resources will receive a higher grade for course participation.. STUDENT CONDUCT Students are expected to abide by AUB s policy on student code of conduct. In particular, while taking a test or examination, students shall rely on their own mastery of the subject and not attempt to receive help in any way not explicitly approved by the instructor; for example, students shall not try to use notes, study aids, or another s work. Such cheating includes trying to give or obtain information about a test, trying to take someone else s exam, or trying to have someone else take one s own exam. In addition, whenever students draw on another s work, they must specify what they borrowed, whether facts, opinions, or quotations, and where they borrowed it from. Using another person s documented ideas or expressions in one s writing without acknowledging the source constitutes plagiarism. Students are also expected to be honest in all dealings with the University. Certain kinds of dishonesty, though often associated with academic work, are of a different category than cheating or plagiarism. These kinds of dishonesty include (but are not limited to) the following: a. Misrepresenting personal circumstances to an instructor (for example, in requesting a makeup exam or special due date for an assignment, or in explaining an absence). b. Forging parts of, or signature on, official documents (including both, university documents and relevant outside documents, such as doctors notes). c. Taking credit for work in a team-project when little or no contribution to the work of the team has been made.
