Students develop a portfolio of documents to qualify them to take the Capstone Course. Pre-requisites: Admission to the RN-BSN option required. NRS 2793, NRS 3413, NRS 3713, NRS 3713, NRS 3723, NRS 4743, NRS 4723, NRS 4763 BSN Student Learning Outcomes: The graduate will: 1. Value a culture of safety in all aspects of professional practice. 2. Relate and apply knowledge of the sciences to provide individualized quality patient care. 3. Use the nursing process in providing care to patients/ families/communities/ populations. 4. Demonstrate effective and professional communication with patients/families/ communities/populations and members of the health care team. 5. Teach patients/families/communities/populations/healthcare professionals. 6. Use evidence based research in nursing practice. 7. Manage the delivery of care to patients/families/communities/populations. 8. Collaborate within nursing and inter-professional teams to achieve quality care. 9. Exemplify professionalism in all aspects of nursing practice. Course Student Learning Outcomes: I. Examine an issue relevant to safety and quality of care. IV. Analyze the role of the nurse manager in communicating with other members of the health team. VI. Identify the best evidence to monitor outcomes and improve care processes to minimize risk of harm to patients and providers through both system effectiveness and individual performance. 1

2 VII. Analyze the principles of leadership and management as they relate to the role of the nurse manager in a changing healthcare environment. VIII. Synthesize the role of the nurse manager in collaborating, consulting, and coordinating with other members of the health team in providing and directing patient care. Additional Course Goals: Other outcomes of this course are the student will (1) identify and secure placement for their upcoming BSN Capstone project (clinical affiliation agreement mandatory) and (2) build their Capstone Portfolio. These two goals must be met for successful completion of this course. Teaching Methods/Strategies: Participation in weekly class discussions, selected readings, written assignments, student presentations, group work, audio-visual presentations, critical thinking exercises and multimedia assignments are possible instructional methods for this class. All portions of the course will be conducted online. It is the student s responsibility to have access to the class materials on a regular and reliable basis. Interaction with fellow students and faculty will occur electronically. 3 To be successful in this course, you must have frequent access to a computer with internet capability, as there will be no classroom meetings of the class. Inadequate bandwidth will result in slow lowing of course content, including but not limited to course examinations and quizzes. Students must secure proper bandwidth access. All students are required to have access using the ASU student account. accounts may be obtained by accessing the ASU home page, current students tab and activating your student digital ID. Students must correspond using their A-State account. The use of word-processing, , attachments, and power point are required for successful completion of this course. ASU is a Microsoft campus and Microsoft Office is available for download from Information and Technology Services (ITS), The grades you receive on assignments will be available to you on the electronic grade book within Blackboard. Your grades will be visible only to you and the instructor. Course Grades: Final course grades will be computed utilizing the College of Nursing grading scale found in the Nursing Student Handbook. A = % B = % C = % D = % F = below 60% For progression all students must achieve at least a C for the course. No rounding will occur with grading on exams, written work, or the final course grade. To determine the current course average at any given point in the course, students should check the weighted average column in the grade book. Academic integrity is expected. Please review the University Policy on Academic Integrity in the ASU Student Handbook. Although unit assignments are completed at home and students may use notes or textbooks, students are expected to complete the assignments individually without assistance from any other person. All course work submitted is to be the student s own work and not previously submitted in another course for a grade. Students are encouraged to use a plagiarism checker for all written work. Students who have questions about the Honor Code or what constitutes academic integrity should do not hesitate to ask their instructor or the program coordinator. Late Penalty: Written assignments are due by 11:59 p.m. on the specified due dates unless a different time is posted. Late work is NOT accepted unless previous arrangements are made and will only be considered for extreme situations, such as significant illness, death of a family member, etc. Circumstances will be evaluated on an individual as-needed basis if the request is made prior to the assignment due date. Slow internet service is not an acceptable reason to submit work late unless the ASU server is malfunctioning; in which case the due date assignment will be extended for the entire 3

4 class as appropriate. Any work that has been approved for a late submission will be subject to a late penalty. Written assignments (i.e. exams, assignments, papers) submitted after the deadline will have ten (10) points deducted per day, or fraction thereof, including the day the paper is submitted. Note: The late penalty for discussion board activity is outlined in the discussion board grading rubric. Spelling, Grammar, and APA format: All written work is expected to be at Bachelor level proficiency and have correct formatting, grammar, and spelling. The grading rubric will outline how many points are assignment for each area of the paper including spelling, grammar, and APA format. For papers without specific spelling, grammar, and APA format criteria, up to twenty (20) points may be deducted from written assignments for spelling, grammar, or APA formatting errors. Students are highly encouraged to create all written work in a word documents and utilize spell-check and grammar-check features prior to submitting any written work for this course. Examinations will be taken by the due dates. If problems are encountered during any exam, send the faculty an IMMEDIATELY explaining the problem. This does not indicate the exam will be reset for the student if the identified problem is deemed to be caused by the student s internet connection, i.e. slow loading of examination/quiz items. s will be monitored on exam days prior to 5:00 p.m. If an is not received regarding the problem encountered the grade achieved will stand. If extraordinary circumstances exist preventing you from taking an exam you must contact the faculty prior to the exam to make alternate arrangements for taking the exam. Late penalties will apply. Note that late exams may have a different format. For these and other reasons, students are urged to not wait until the last minute to complete assignments. Respondus Lockdown Browser : You must use the Respondus Lockdown Browser for all examinations. Please download the free Respondus software to your computer prior to taking your first exam (this is located under the Tools section on Blackboard). Participation in class discussions via Blackboard is required each week. A grading rubric for the discussions will be used and is posted for you to view prior to writing your first discussion post. The discussion contributions that you submit on Blackboard will identify you as the author and will be available to all students in the class. Students are expected to read and respond professionally to classmates as appropriate. Initial discussion board postings will be due by midnight on Wednesday on the specified week. Skipping or waiving assignments: Skipping or waiving assignments in any ASU- Jonesboro online RN-BSN course is never an option. If students neglect to complete any module assignment, they will receive a 0% for that assignment. Additionally, the course instructor has the right to lower the final grade for that course by one full letter grade. 4

5 Professional Etiquette: Professional etiquette and demeanor are expected at all times. This includes when you are addressing your course peers and the instructor. At no time is it acceptable to use degrading comments/remarks or accusations. Such actions are considered unprofessional and will not be tolerated. Contacting the Instructor: Students may contact the course instructor at any time with their questions or comments. Students are encouraged to contact the instructor any time they need clarification or have questions about the course material, assignments, or other courserelated items. Always address instructors respectfully and with their proper professional title. As a first option for contacting the course instructor, students should use the instructor s (listed at the beginning of this syllabus). As a second option, students may call the office and leave a voice mail for the instructor. Students must include their students ID and course name in each correspondence with the instructor, as the instructor likely teaches several other courses/students. Instructor Responses: Every attempt will be made to respond to your inquiry within 48 hours of receiving your on Monday through Thursday. Inquiries received Friday through Sunday may not be responded to until Monday during normal office hours. If you have ed the instructor and do not get a response within this time frame, please the instructor again. Instructor Office Hours: You may contact the instructor via to get a copy of the instructor office hours for the current semester. If you wish to schedule a telephone call with the instructor simply your request to kaltom@astate.edu and a time and date will be set for your call. ProctorU ProctorU is a live online proctoring service that allows students to take exams from the comfort of their home. ProctorU provides instructors with options for online proctoring of exams and assignments. Instructors may utilize live proctoring or UCard authentication services. Your instructor will provide specific information as to the services selected for this course. Students will create their ProctorU/UCard profile at the beginning of the semester. Once completed, students will use this profile to schedule their exams as instructors make the exams available. Please note that UCard authentication checks may occur at any time during the course. ProctorU is available 24/7, however students will need to schedule a proctoring session at least 72 hours in advance to avoid any on demand scheduling fees. To create a ProctorU profile visit go.proctoru.com. ProctorU also provides free technical support to ensure students have the best testing situation possible. That is available at 5

6 On this page students will be able to test their equipment, learn about what to expect during the proctoring session and ask any questions about the proctoring process with a ProctorU representative. ProctorU technical support is also available via phone at In order to use ProctorU you will need to have a high-speed internet connection, a webcam (internal or external), a Windows or Apple Operating System, and a government issued photo id. ProctorU recommends that you visit prior to the proctoring session to test equipment that will be used during the exam session. 6
