1 BIOLOGY Pathophysiology Tentative Spring 2017 TTH 11:00 AM-12:50 PM CFO 202 Instructor: Gregory M. (Manny) Hines Office: ASSC 342 Office Hours: TTH 8:00-10:45 AM Telephone: Biology Office Course Text: Huether, Sue E. and McCance, Kathryn L., Understanding Pathophysiology, Sixth Edition Elsevier Inc., St. Louis Missouri, ISBN Study Guide/Workbook: Huether, Sue E. and McCance, Kathryn L., Understanding Pathophysiology, Sixth Edition Elsevier, St Louis, Missouri, ISBN COURSE DESCRIPTION: Pathophysiology has as prerequisites eight hours of recently completed anatomy and physiology. This course is designed to present an orientation to disease as disordered physiology. It is intended to enable students majoring in nursing to understand how and why the symptoms and signs of various conditions appear. In approaching disease as disordered physiology, this course analyzes the mechanism(s) of production of symptoms and signs of different disease states. In doing so, it recognizes that those in advanced nursing practice need to understand the mechanism(s) underlying the disease and its clinical manifestations so that rational therapies can be devised. Thus, appropriate screening and diagnostic laboratory evaluation methods will be included. PRIMARY OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. Describe the cellular nature of human disease. 2. Recognize specific disorders and their major etiology (cause) and pathological changes. 3. Describe dysfunction in various body systems. 4. Critically evaluate pathophysiological states. In submitting graded assignments, students affirm that they have neither given nor received unauthorized assistance, and that they have abided by all other provisions of the Code of Conduct in the TWU Student Handbook. Cheating, plagiarism, fabrication or other kinds of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated and will result in appropriate sanctions that may include failing an assignment, failing the class, or being suspended or expelled. Suspected cases in this course may be reported to Student Life. The specific disciplinary process for academic dishonesty is found in the TWU Student Handbook. 2

3 The TWU library link, Avoiding Plagiarism, will aid students in completing their assignments with integrity. GRADING: There will be five exams during the semester. Each exam will be worth 100 points and will determine one fifth of the grade. Workbook assignments will be worth a total of 100 points. The final exam is not cumulative. There are no extra credit options. A = 90 or above B = C = D = F = 59 or below No one will be permitted to take the exam if they are more than 15 minutes late arriving at the scheduled exam time. Grades will be posted on Blackboard. Scantrons will be returned and the exam will be available for review at the next class period. If the student does not attend the class during which the exam is reviewed, only a grade will be given out at a later date. You must inform me on the day of the exam if you are going to be absent from the exam, or before, if known. Absence from exams will be handled according to the College of Nursing guidelines. Only students with legitimate excuses will be allowed to make up missed exam. All valid excuses must fall under guidelines created by the University policy as stated in the Student Handbook. "The only excused absences are for: Illness. I will need official certification from you doctor, typed on medical stationary (with their license # to practice medicine on it) This must be provided in the week of the exam or no later than Monday following Friday of the missed exam. Funeral attendance. I will need proof of funeral attendance with the date of the ceremony clearly listed. This must be provided in the week of the exam or no later than Monday following Friday of the missed exam. Mandatory courtroom appearance. I will need a copy of your official court summons with the date of your required attendance clearly listed. This must be provided in the week of the exam or no later than Monday following Friday of the missed exam. Winthrop Athletic event participation. I will need a signed letter from your coach no later than one week prior to the day of the exam. Student athletes who do not conform to this policy will not be allowed to make up the missed exam. 3

4 Note that: 1. I only allow one missed exam to be made up per semester. Any other missed exam will be assigned 0 points. 2. Students who miss an exam without a legitimate excuse will automatically receive 0 points for that exam. The last day to with draw from classes is April 7, 2017 at 5 PM Student Conduct Students enrolling in Texas Woman s University and registered student organizations assume an obligation to conduct themselves in a manner compatible with the University s function as an educational community. The act of registering for classes or registering as a TWU student organization is considered an explicit acceptance of TWU s regulations as outlined in the most recent issue of the Student Handbook and Planner, the General Catalog, the Graduate Catalog, and other official University publications. To fulfill its functions of imparting and gaining knowledge, TWU retains the authority to maintain order within the university and to exclude those who are disruptive of the educational process or who represent a threat to the community. (TWU General Catalog , p. 105) The following proactive steps will be taken to eliminate problems with aggressive, belligerent, or disrespectful behavior at Texas Woman s University: 1. The disruptive student will be asked to leave the class. 2. A Student Code of Conduct Report Form may be submitted to the Office of Student Life by the instructor, or fellow students. 3. The offending student will meet with the Chair of the department in which the infraction occurred. 4. The offending student will meet with Student Life if the behavior persists. If warranted the student may be suspended from the university until a hearing can be held to determine whether the suspension should be sustained and to deliver to the student any required conditions for reinstatement. 4

5 Additional supportive/directive information 1. Please understand that if you miss class, it is YOUR responsibility to find out what you missed. Don t ask me. I was here. I will have outlines and PowerPoints on blackboard. 2. Please do not ask me What do I need to study or what will be on the test? It is all important. 3. Pathophysiology is a HARD subject. It requires discipline and dedicated study time. You should plan your week to study 2-3 hours per class hour per week. Some of you, maybe more. Find a partner, it is a lot memorization. It takes a long time. Test each other. 4. One of my pet peeves is distractive talk and repeating something I just said because you were not listening. Please listen and be attentive in class. Be respectful of those around you. 5. Of course, I expect you to have integrity and not cheat. 6. Please do not ask me to bump your grade or give you extra points when you feel you are short. I don t drop exams. Please do not ask! 7. It is your responsibility to keep up with your grades and your scantrons. Everything will be on Blackboard and unless your grade is recorded incorrectly there is no reason to contact me about you exam grade. ****Course content may be modified as required at the instructor s discretion **** Students With Disabilities If you anticipate the need for reasonable accommodations to meet the requirements of this course, you must register with the office of Disability Support Services (CFO 106, , dss@twu.edu ) in order to obtain the required official notification of your accommodation needs. Please plan to meet with me by appointment or during office hours to discuss approved accommodations and how my course requirements and activities may impact your ability to fully participate. TWU College of Nursing Statement BIOL 4344-Pathophysiology, or its equivalent, is not a prerequisite for admission to upper division baccalaureate nursing in the College of Nursing. The grade from BIOL 4344-Pathophysiology or its equivalent, is not calculated into my GPA for admission purposes to upper division nursing. However, BIOL 4344-Pathophysiology or its equivalent, is part of the nursing curriculum and the grade made in BIOL 4344 prior to acceptance to the upper division baccaluareate program will be used to determine continuation in the program. This policy is located in the Texas Woman s University General Catalog and on the College of Nursing website 1. A minimum grade of C is required in pathophysiology 2. A minimum grade of C is required in all courses in the nursing major. If a student earn a grade of D, F, or WF in a nursing course (including pathophysiology), that course must be repeated. A course in which a grade of less than C (D, F, or WF) was earned may be repeated only once. 3. A student who had earned a grade of less than C (D, F, or WF) in two nursing courses (including pathophysiology) or who has earned a grade of less than C (D, F, or WF) twice in the same nursing course (including pathophysiology) will be required to leave the nursing program. 4. Students receiving a grade of I, D, F, or WF in a nursing course (including pathophysiology) may not progress to courses for which that course is a prerequisite. 5
