1 INTRODUCTION ALDER HEY CHILDREN S NHS FOUNDATION TRUST MTI Fellowship in General Paediatrics and Sub speciality JOB DESCRIPTION This is a new full time (48 hours / week) fellow post initially in general paediatrics for a period of 12 months followed by further 12 months in a chosen sub-speciality or 6 months each in 2 different sub-specialities. Applicants will be appointed through the RCPCH MTI scheme from overseas. The appointee will work at the level of ST4 and above. The first 3 months will be spent at ST3 level to orientate and familiarise the appointee with the UK system. This scheme offers an opportunity for experienced international clinicians, who have already achieved higher postgraduate qualifications, to come to the UK and broaden their experience in general paediatrics and related subspecialties, with prior agreement. GENERAL PAEDIATRICS The department has the equivalent of 9 WTE General Paediatricians in post. The department admits about 5,000 patients under its care annually and provides general paediatric and rapid access clinics. There are in the region of 56,000 new attendances at Alder Hey ED annually, of which about 10% are admitted. Approximately 5% of ED attendances are directly referred to the medical on call team via Primary Care services. DUTIES Clinical The examination, investigation, diagnosis and treatment of acutely unwell medical patients. To work as part of a Multidisciplinary Team Outpatient clinics both General Paediatric and Rapid Access Responsibility for patients directly referred to the ED until that patient is admitted to an inpatient ward or returned to the care of their general practitioner. Advice and clinical consultation to other inpatient services e.g. general surgery Other Liaison with senior colleagues to ensure the provision of effective paediatric clinical services. 1

2 Responsibility in respect of the reasonable and effective use of hospital and district resources in liaison with General Paediatrics budget holder. Liaison through the Clinical Business Unit with other staff of the hospital and relevant CCGs Teaching and training of medical students, junior staff (medical and nursing) within the department and wards Contribution to Clinical Governance activities in the Department Participation in quality improvement initiatives in the Department e.g. implementation of National Guidance. 3 OPD clinics Some ward based cover Cover for acute medical admissions as part of on call in and out of hours Attending speciality clinics as negotiated Part of safe medication committee Research, Audit and Teaching On call work will involve: The care of medical patients, both in-patients and acute admissions, as part of the medical on call team. The role excludes PICU and Cardiology which has separate cover provision. The job plan is subject to annual review with the SGL, with any changes being agreed within the department. Sub-speciality: There are slots available in the second year to get specific sub speciality training in paediatric gastroenterology, neurology, endocrinology and diabetes. Remuneration for both general paediatric and speciality posts will be on the appropriate point of the Specialty Training Doctor pay scale. This post is banded at 1A. RESEARCH The Trust has a comprehensive research programme and all consultants are encouraged to be involved. The Research and Development Directorate ensures that research is incorporated into the management infrastructure and is part of the Trust's overall service plan and strategy. A number of operational groups and key individuals facilitate the planning coordination and support of research. Quality assurance of all Trust-based research is achieved through peer review of all proposals by the Research Committee. The Trust runs a number of evidence-based medicine research teaching sessions and Research Awareness Day Workshops which are open to all Trust staff disciplines. TEACHING The Trust provides a significant number of placements for Undergraduate Medical Students from the University of Liverpool: in excess of 600 are placed with the Trust each year. A problem-based curriculum is in place and students from years 2, 3, 4 and 5 attend placements. The Trust also offers a wide range of special study modules for students. Postgraduate teaching is co-ordinated by the Postgraduate Tutor, his/her deputies and the staff in the Education Centre. There is a curriculum for all grades of doctors in training. There is also a large amount of multidisciplinary teaching and individual clinical 3

4 teams provide teaching for their juniors. The post holder will be expected to be involved in the teaching of undergraduate students and to contribute to the postgraduate teaching programme. AUDIT AND CLINICAL GOVERNANCE The appointee will join the trust Safe Medication Committee as a trainee representative. The appointee will be expected to participate in audits and the development of protocols and care pathways specific to the service. Doctors are expected to be aware of the principles of clinical governance and to contribute to the aims of the Trust in achieving continuing improvement in all aspects of delivery of the service. CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT All doctors are expected to maintain their personal portfolios in accordance with the requirements of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health or equivalent. The Fellow will have an annual review. The fellow will have a named clinical/educational supervisor and will maintain an e portfolio used by the health Education, North West paediatric trainees. The fellow will have regular appraisal meetings with the clinical/educational supervisor. PROFILE OF LIVERPOOL: Liverpool is an old established port city which has experienced major revitalization in recent years. The city, European Capital of Culture 2008, is a cosmopolitan and vibrant centre for industry and commerce. The city of Liverpool is compact and is served by excellent links to both the motorway network and rail services. It is within easy reach of Liverpool and Manchester airports. Most of its suburbs are within 30 minutes travelling of the city centre. The city has historically been a centre for the arts and sport. Liverpool's theatres, concert halls, museums and art collections are nationally acclaimed. Art galleries, include the Walker and the Tate. The Philharmonic Hall is home to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. The city is also alive with a variety of independent theatre groups, musicians and artists. As well as its two premiership football teams, Liverpool is home to first class county cricket and top level rugby union. The Grand National has made Aintree race course world renowned. The city also has unrivalled facilities for participative sport at all levels. Liverpool is rightly famous for its two cathedrals, but it is also home to two major universities with a rich and varied academic community. The city can offer a range of excellent schools in both the independent and state sectors. The city's recent renaissance, centred on the re-development of the docks and inner city, has also made Liverpool a centre for tourism with millions of visitors each year coming to enjoy the city and the surrounding area. Liverpool is within easy reach of the national parks of North Wales, the Peak District and the Lake District, as well as the Lancashire and Welsh coasts and the historic city of Chester.
