2 Carer Duty Statement POSITION TITLE: LOCATION: STATUS: REPORTS TO: Carer Djooraminda Casual Program Manager 1. OVERALL PURPOSE 1.1. To provide a safe, therapeutic, culturally appropriate, home-like environment to children living in a Djooraminda Cottage To provide appropriate support and assistance to children who may display challenging behaviours associated with abuse/neglect, trauma, attachment, separation, grief and loss. 2. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES DAILY CARE 2.1. Attend to the daily needs of the children including, but not limited to: Prepare meals Arrange clothing Do laundry Provide transport to school and other activities Purchase food and household goods Clean and tidy the cottage Set and supervise children s chores Teach grooming and hygiene skills Apply first aid and administer medications if required If a child falls ill, collect that child from school and adhere to their needs 2.2. Assist children with feeding, dressing, showering and mobility if required Spend time listening to and talking with children in a supportive manner Maintain routines and ensure that all care is provided in a consistent manner Follow behaviour management strategies as outlined in the child s care plan, avoiding punitive disciplinary actions Provide day to day care in ways which meet their developmental needs and have a positive effect on their self-esteem, attachment and security of the child. 3. ACTIVITIES 3.1. Supervise the children s reading and homework and assist them with school projects, where necessary. Page 2 of 6

Take the children on planned weekend and holiday outings, in conjunction with Djooraminda s Travel Policy and Approval Policy Play games and activities with the children Watch the children play sport, where possible Attend school assemblies, presentations, award ceremonies and sporting carnivals Get the children ready for contact visits and transport them when directed Undertake activities that support the children maintain their culture through regular life story work, attending community cultural events, and cultural holiday activities in conjunction with the Djooraminda Cultural Liaison Officers. 4. SERVICE COORDINATION 4.1. Report cottage maintenance and repair needs to the Cottage Support Worker Contact the on call Care Coordinator after hours to report any emergencies Maintain appropriate records which include; the Cottage communication book, Notification of Serious Matters, incident reports, purchase requests etc Attend Cottage handover meetings at the start and end of each rostered period, providing details on homework, medication, behaviour and other issues pertaining to the children Ensure the Cottage and vehicle are left clean and stocked at the end of each roster period and prior to handover Liaise with the Care Coordinator, Cultural Liaison Officer and Cottage Support Worker to ensure a team approach to care Attend Cottage meetings, Carer s meetings, Care Plan Review meetings and Case Management meetings (CPFS) Provide input to children s care plans and reviews. 5. FINANCIAL RESPONSABILITY 5.1. Ensure cottage allowance is only used for appropriate purchases for the cottage and children Ensure all receipts and unspent cottage allowance are returned at the end of each shift Only purchase approved items on purchase orders and provide receipts as proof of purchase. 6. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 6.1. During the first two weeks, participate in the orientation program Attend group supervision as per arrangement with the Program Manager Participate in the staff development, performance appraisals and training programs offered by the agency Participate in Djooraminda and OHC specific training in relation to therapeutic care, cultural competency and safety. 7. KNOWLEDGE 7.1. Understanding of therapeutic care including parenting knowledge and experience in demonstrating love, consistency, attention, guidance, patience, understanding and respect Basic child care skills in health, hygiene, healthy meal alternatives, routines, socialisation and behaviour management Hospitality knowledge / experiencing in meal preparation, cleaning, laundry and general housekeeping duties Understanding /awareness of Aboriginal culture. 5 Name Youth Residential Carer Selection Criteria ESSENTIAL CRITERIA 1. National Police Clearance and Working with Children Check Card An offer of employment will only made to prospective applicants who are in possession of a current National Police Clearance and have the ability to apply for a Working with Children Check Card. 2. A knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, social and historical issues. 3. Demonstrated ability to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and their families. MINIMAL CRITERIA 1. Well developed communication skills, written and verbal. 2. Experience in providing Out of Home care or residential care programs for children. 3. Knowledge of the developmental ages and stages of children. 4. Knowledge and experience of family therapeutic supports, counselling and early intervention. 5. Ability to work in a residential or cottage care program. 6. Proven organisational and time management skills. 7. Possession of a current C (previously A ) class driver s licence and vehicle. 8. Ability to work within the Catholic Ethos. 9. Possession of a relevant qualification related to position. ADDITIONAL CRITERIA 1. Ability to work within a therapeutic team environment. 2. Ability to engage in training. 3. Ability to participate in clinical supervision. 4. Capacity to develop and maintain the home as a warm, safe, secure and comfortable environment in which children may grow and develop. Page 5 of 6

A National Police Certificate can be obtained by applying at your local Post Office.
