Kyle@FutureofFlight.org. 3D PRINTING MAKERSPACE project. It was inspiring to see all the systems and logistics that go into making the best aircraft in the world, while also learning about the possible career pathways that are available in the aerospace manufacturing industry. If you are employed by or aware of a local aerospace manufacturer that supports technical career pathways and helping young people connect their daily life with STEAM careers, consider hosting an Aerospace Manufacturing Tour. Providing time for middle and high school students to observe manufacturing and interact with employees in the field can help them better visualize working in the aerospace industry. We support our industry partners by handling the registration process and logistics. Please contact Amanda Goertz our CTE Program Administrator at x245 or amanda@futureofflight.org to discuss how we can increase interest in aerospace manufacturing together. Since 2014, we've been working to improve and expand our Family Zone, an area of the Aviation Gallery designed for families and other visitors, especially those who may not be tall enough for the factory tour. We've just rearranged the exhibit to improve access to our kid sized airport, as well as the hands on interactives that make the Nano Exhibit so much fun, like our Bernoulli Table. We've also added three new display posters dedicated to how nanotechnology affects aviation, and a fun height chart that allows visitors to check their height in nano meters. On Saturday and Sunday, Family Zone visitors are encouraged to visit a Weekend Family Workshop, which takes place in the Flightline Room at 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Fun for all ages! These fun and informative programs provide a unique connection with flight and the science of aviation. Workshops are free with Gallery or Tour admission, and free for members. Workshops are scheduled for every Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. in the Flightline Room. Snohomish County Tourism Bureau Honors 20 Year Milestone Volunteers Thank you to all who gave BIG to the community wide online GiveBIG day held on May 3. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Have Fun While Making a Difference! Volunteering with the Institute of Flight offers a myriad of opportunities. Develop your skills and knowledge and attain valuable work related experiences. It's a great opportunity to grow your skills and knowledge, attain valuable work related experiences and have fun while making a difference. To see a list of available opportunities, please visit our Volunteer Match page. Some of the real volunteer needs of the Institute of Flight Volunteers assist with registration and silent auction at the 2015 Gala & Auction are: Auction Item Procurement Team; Graphic Designer; Event Greeter/Check in; Event Photographer and Videographer; Social Media Specialist. Please refer to the Guidelines on We encourage you to complete the volunteer application through our Volunteer Match site. Share with us your strengths and the type of volunteer experience you prefer. VOLUNTEER NEED: Re upholstery Since the Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour opened in 2005, 4 million guests have visited the Aviation Center and Gallery. Is it surprising then with that much traffic that some things start to wear out and fray? One of the most popular exhibits in the Gallery is the cockpit of a Boeing 727. Visitors enter the cockpit, sit in the crew's seats, dream of flying to
8 727 cockpit seats in need of re upholstering parts unknown, and take selfies of themselves to post to Facebook. Now after 10 years, the upholstery on the pilot and co pilot's chairs must be replaced. We are in need of a volunteer who is skilled in upholstery to take on this important task and help us maintain the quality of the exhibits and the visitor experience. If you are interested, please contact ashley@futureofflight.org. The Center of Excellence publishes aerospace and manufacturing industry related job opportunities in Washington. This link offers job seekers a unique filter to find jobs that meet their training or experience and provides employers with a more directed workforce. To view jobs, go to coeaerospace.com/jobs. THE FUTURE OF OUR EXHIBIT GALLERY As our Board of Directors and staff moved through the re branding in 2015 on behalf of our nonprofit, clarification and discovery occurred which now serves as a road map for our exhibit planning. Our story is about current and future innovation within aerospace, not history. Our essence is education (with a focus on hands on exhibits) and our opportunity is to support the aerospace industry with inspiring young people to consider a career in STEAM (Science, Technology, Education, Art, and Math). Our strength is we are able to encourage our guests to get up close and personal with our exhibits. For guests who go on the Boeing Tour, following up with a walk through of our Gallery is helpful to be able to touch carbon fiber, understand the scale of an engine and learn more about biofuels, rapid prototype printing, etc. To differentiate our center from other attractions that focus on history is important, as the Future of Flight Aviation Center is not a museum. We understand the confusion; however, we do not have proper storage or a significant hallmark collection to be called a museum. With appreciation, our current hanging aircraft are on loan from our neighbor, the Museum of Flight. We have submitted a grant for our first Exhibits Director. Currently our goal is to immediately improve our guest experience and to not wait for a grant, hence our interim plan. We have a draft of a litmus test which is helping us with our decision of what stays and what goes, and also to help us identify our needs for the future. In Q4 we will be releasing a Request for Proposal for an exhibit design firm, in order to better understand pricing and budget required for an upcoming capital campaign. Co led by Bonnie (Executive Director) and Peter (Operations and Exhibits Director), the Institute is focusing attention on our interim exhibit planning throughout Here is a sneak peak of some of the coming changes in our 28,000 square foot Gallery: Improved map and signage, featuring zones with hanging and floor banners and improved signage for our exhibits aligned to a floor map. For our Boeing fans, the Gallery floor map will identify featured Boeing innovations. The Family Zone layout is being reconfigured, adding room for strollers and additional seating.
9 Special thanks to The Boeing Company for providing a subject matter expert to work closely with our Education staff on updating our NANO technologies exhibit, now featuring Nano Technologies in Aerospace. The Propulsion Zone. This week the GE 90 engine is being moved to the propulsion zone. During the week of June 20, GE will be updating this exhibit, adding new reading rails, banners and a 3D theater experience. Soon you will see pipe and drape in our new temporary exhibit zone(s). Special thanks to our Board Exhibit Committee members who established a sub committee (made up of current and past Boeing employees, aerospace companies, Board members, volunteers, contractors and staff) to work together to create relevant temporary exhibits this summer. Anticipate a carbon fiber story in one zone and The Boeing Company Centennial exhibit which will be combined with airplane models of current and future production. INSTITUTE OF FLIGHT BOARD MEMBERS SOUGHT Our Institute of Flight Board of Directors is pleased to announce we are accepting requests to fill one citizen at large position (not employed by Snohomish County, but a resident of Snohomish County). In addition, we have four other vacancies. We recommend those interested to send a résumé and cover letter to Bonnie Hilory, Executive Director, Bonnie@futureofflight.org. Documents that may be of interest are Strategic Plan and Responsibilities for Board Members The Institute of Flight, (an independent, 501(c)(3) non profit organization) formerly the Future of Flight Foundation, opened the Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour on December 17, In its nearly ten years of operation, the Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour has attracted more than 1.5 million visitors.
