2 EDUCATION PLANNING GUIDE Dear Educator, Youth Group Leader, Future of Flight Member or Neighbor: Table of Contents Welcome to our new Future of Flight Foundation Education Planning Guide for Our Guide is designed to provide detailed information focused on developing a fun and educational strategy for you to get the most out of your visit to the Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour. Our goal is to help you plan a successful, meaningful field-trip for your group. FOCUS on STEAM We kept you in mind when designing our educational offerings and have embraced STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). When you see the STEAM letters next to a program you can quickly understand what our education staff will emphasize. As an educator, you will now be able to map out the best way to augment your classroom curriculum, through your selection of one or more of our educational offerings. Student exploration and mastery of STEAM has never been more important. Today s teachers are expected to instruct students in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math with inquiry-based active question-and-answer pedagogy and handson investigation. Future of Flight Foundation understands your needs and offers a full portfolio of grade-level appropriate, experiential curricula linked with STEAM programs suitable for students in grades Future of Flight is an approved provider of professional development with OSPI. We offer leading-edge professional development options aimed at improving teaching practices in STEAM disciplines. Efforts to support more schools and non-profits are underway. We have established affordable fees and member rates, and have announced a new financial assistance program. We are also recruiting teachers who plan on using our education programs to join our Teacher Advisory Board User Group. Turn left at the stoplight where Highway 526 intersects with 84th St. SW and Paine Field Boulevard. The entry drive will be on your left. LOCATION: 25 miles north of Seattle at 8415 Paine Field Blvd., Mukilteo, WA HOURS: Open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year s Day. Boeing tours begin at 9 a.m. and are offered on the hour with the last tour time starting at 3 p.m. On Christmas Eve and New Year s Eve, the Future of Flight closes at 1:30 p.m. with the last Boeing Tour beginning at 11:00 a.m. For the most up-to-date tour times available call WEB SITE: WHO WE ARE The Future of Flight Foundation (an independent, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization) opened the Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour on December 17, In its nearly nine years of operation, the Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour has attracted more than 1.5 million visitors. In addition to operating and managing the Future of Flight, the Foundation embraces the important role of stewardship of an active and healthy Culture of Philanthropy. Education, events, Aviation Center exhibits, and financial assistance for needy schools and non-profits are key areas of impact. The Future of Flight Foundation is proud to partner with The Boeing Company and Snohomish County. Under the leadership of the County, the Future of Flight facility is partially funded by the Snohomish County Public Facilities District. The Foundation is governed by a 24-member Board of Directors, with representation from The Boeing Company and Snohomish County. TAB provides recommendations for curriculum alignment, ideas for teacher professional development, and suggestions for other programs and events. TAB will meet one Saturday a quarter, from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the Future of Flight Aviation Center. TAB members receive program discounts when they register their class. Cancellation fees for no-shows due to adverse weather or other circumstances beyond the group s control are addressed on a case-by-case basis. Refunds are NOT given for programs canceled within two weeks of the scheduled program date. 5 FOCUS ON STEAM Our Education Team has selected the standards below as a reference for educators. As a learning center focused on flight (aviation and space), we view our role as supportive, with the focus on project-based learning. 6 EDUCATION PROGRAMS AEROSPACE MAKER PROJECT (AMP) NSF Award # AMP offers students going into grades 6-12 the opportunity to learn and create their own solutions to the question How Are Planes Made? AMP student-makers will gain new skills and knowledge to communicate about materials science, airplane manufacturing, and 3D printing technology, all while having fun and being one of the first to use our new Aerospace Maker Space. Starts October 6th. This program is made possible by grants from the University of Washington and The National Science Foundation. Grade Level: 6-8, 9-12 Group Size: Individual registration only Schedule: After school on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Program Length: Modular, 30+ drop-in hours over 2 months Fees: Members - $145, All Others - $195 BOEING CAREER TOUR Module 1 (30 Hours): Oct. 6th - Dec. 10th Module 2 (30 Hours): Jan. 5th - Mar. 31st Module 3 (30 Hours): Apr. 1st - Jun. 6th We have designed a tour that focuses on careers pursued by those building Boeing aircraft. From assembly to quality assurance, this tour will help your students understand the variety of careers and roles that allow these amazing airplanes to be built. The program includes a 90-minute career-focused factory tour, with a Career Find-and- Seek activity and a Career Pathways discussion. Closed-toe shoes are required. Grade Level: 5-8, or 9-12 Group Size: Schedule: Tuesdays at 9:30 or 10:00 a.m. in January and February, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from March to May Program Length: 3 Hours Chaperone Ratio: 1:10. Extra chaperones may not exceed bus limitation of 50 total guests. Additional chaperones are $20 per person. Fees: Members - $200, All Others - $250 This program is available from January 5th - May 29th, RESERVE TODAY! CALL

7 BARRY SMITH GLIDING INTO INNOVATION PROGRAM EDUCATION PROGRAMS Gliding into innovation was named for Barry Smith, who served as the organization s founding Executive Director from its inception until The program teaches the engineering design method, the forces of flight, how to test ideas, teamwork, and presentation skills. Curriculum materials, kit supplies, and educator support are provided. Groups must provide one shoebox for every three participants. FOFF educators will judge each team s project on presentation, design, time aloft, and distance traveled. The winning project will be accepted into our Summer 2015 Student Innovation Exhibit. This program starts on October 6th, Mileage beyond Snohomish County limits is charged at $0.45 per mile. Participating groups are also responsible for incidental costs such as ferries, toll roads, or parking fees. Grade Level: 5-7, 8-9, Group Size: Schedule: Thursdays at Future of Flight, Friday Outreach, 3 facilitated classroom hours, 6 one-hour teacher-led sessions, and a 4.5-hour culminating event, held here or at your location. Program Length: 13.5 Hours Chaperone Ratio: 1:10 Fees: Members - $400, All Others - $450 For your in-class sessions, teacher training is recommended. Training is available on October 11th & 25th, 2014 and January 10th and March 21st, 2015, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. XENOPLANES Your group will learn about extra-terrestrial environments while expanding their own abilities to design functional aircraft capable of flying in atmospheric conditions far different from those of Earth. Students will examine the material needs of an airborne mission bound for Venus and calculate the wing shape necessary for flight in the meager atmosphere of Mars. Grade Level: 3-5, 6-8, 9-12 Group Size: Schedule: Wednesday and Friday at 9:30 or 10:00 a.m. Program Length: 1.5 Hours Chaperone Ratio: 1:10 Fees: Members - $150, All Others - $200 This program is available from November 5th, June 6th, RESERVE TODAY! 8 EDUCATION TOURISM OVERVIEW The Future of Flight Foundation hosts education institutions partnering to create a unique blend of aerospace and tourism experiences. A minimum of 45 days advance notice is required. OBJECTIVES Learn about the changing nature of the international workplace, the value of work in society, and the connection between work, achievement, and personal goals. Access and apply interests, personal skills, aptitudes, and abilities to education planning and future career decisions. Develop international aviation-related knowledge and skills, which in turn can strengthen our communities. Foster positive follow-on effects for tourism, trade links, and the international labor market. ACTIVITIES Inspired by the Boeing Factory Tour, students will tour other aerospace-related companies and hear from experts in their field of study while being assigned a team-based project to be completed by the end of their stay. In addition, hands-on learning will be emphasized, focusing on aerospace topics which influence innovation and inspire young people to select aviation or aerospace as a career pathway. 9 EDUCATION TOURISM ROBOTICS Explore the larger issues of robotics while focusing on the fundamentals of engineering during this novel and informative program. Participants can use specially-designed robotics kits to find solutions to complex problems. Effective gearing, mechanical concepts, and iterative design are all part of this highly-engaging program. DRONE ZONE Student teams will outfit a drone and fly a reconnaissance mission, exploring concepts like remote sensing and computer-assisted flight. At the same time, groups will be developing team-building skills, investigating new technology, and helping to move us closer to autonomous machines and their revolutionary applications. ALTERNATIVE FUELS The workshop on alternative fuels focuses on the exciting opportunities for exploring energy sources beyond traditional fossil fuels in the aviation industry. Students will profile and analyze the potential of a variety of cutting-edge energy sources. Students will walk away with an understanding of the potential of these technological growth industries. MATERIALS SCIENCE & 3D PRINTING Students will have the opportunity to experiment with some modern engineered materials and see some of the basic equations that materials scientists and engineers use, increasing their understanding of the forces that dominate materials behavior at the molecular level. 10 FAMILY ACTIVITIES & MAKER MONDAYS FAMILY ZONE (DROP-IN) The Family Zone is home to a number of different activities, all designed around a theme of aircraft manufacturing and assembly. Visitors can build a simple aircraft model, or use our Lego (and Lego-compatible) pieces to express new ideas about aircraft design. A kid-size airport and airplanes allow future pilots to practice their take-offs and landings. Coloring and reading activities are also available for younger visitors. The Family Zone is open from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. No charge for FOFF Members or ticket-holders. Facilitation levels may vary based on available personnel. MAKER MONDAYS (DROP-IN/DAILY USAGE FEE) The Future of Flight Maker Space is now operational! Collaborative maker spaces give you the opportunity to work on your own projects, while sharing and improving your skills and benefitting from the experience of others. Come experiment with our 3D-modeling stations and try printing on our MakerBot Replicator. Workshop access for non-members is $5 per day, and printing is charged at $.90 per gram. Makers under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Mondays from 3:00-8:00 p.m. WEEKEND FAMILY WORKSHOPS (DROP-IN) In the hopes that we can provide the richest possible experience for our visitors, Future of Flight is now offering aviation-themed Weekend Family Workshops. Workshops are open from 10:00-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-3:00 p.m., every Saturday and Sunday in the Flightline Room. Each workshop combines a story about aviation and a make-and-take project to extend the experience. The workshops are free with Gallery admission so come and join us for a creative new way to learn about aviation and the science that makes it possible. No charge for FOFF Members. 8

12 GROUP FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE To qualify your classroom/youth group for financial assistance with Future of Flight Foundation s education program, your organization must have a minimum of 35% of students on a federal free or reduced lunch program. We now offer a tiered grant financial assistance scale for schools/groups: 35-49% FRL = 35% discount on programs 50-64% FRL = 50% discount on programs 65-79% FRL = 65% discount on programs % FRL = 80% discount on programs Call our reservation line to hold your program while your request is being approved at We recommend completing this process at least one month prior to the program date you desire. All programs are on a first-come, first-served basis. Schools or youth groups must already have reserved a space in a Future of Flight Education Program prior to applying for financial assistance. 13 INDIVIDUAL FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Our philosophy: Future of Flight Foundation will never deny a child (under 18) participation because of an inability to pay. Thanks to the generous support of the donors who support the Future of Flight Foundation Wine, Wings & More event, and our annual Gala & Auction. These designated gifts allow us to fulfill our goal to inspire young people to explore careers in STEAM fields. Step one: Confirm you have a place in our program. BOOK YOUR PRIVATE EVENT Perched at the edge of Paine Field, the Future of Flight Aviation Center features a unique venue for meetings and special events. The facility offers 8 distinctive spaces to host everything from a 10-person executive meeting to gala receptions for 1,000 guests. Adding the Boeing Tour to the agenda provides guests with the opportunity to experience one of world s most renowned tours. Under a canopy of international flags, the soaring spaces of the Grand Lobby and the suspended aircraft and interactive exhibits in the Aviation Gallery invite festive events, while the fully-equipped meeting rooms ensure productive business. The outdoor Strato Deck delights visitors with its panoramic Cascade Mountain views that include Mount Baker, Mount Rainier, and the North Cascade Mountain Range. Closer views of the Boeing Factory and flight line, Paine Field, and the DreamLifter Operations Center mean that there are always planes in view, often taking off and landing before your very eyes. 15 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION PRE- AND POST-PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS Our education staff has prepared pre- and post-program educational materials to supplement your learning experience at the Future of Flight. These materials include vocabulary sheets, enrichment strategies, pre/post surveys, and STEAM career resource information. If additional information is needed, please contact our Education Director, Amanda Goertz, or x.245. BUS PARKING This fall/spring we anticipate Snohomish County will be expanding our parking (adding between spots). Because of this, we will advise the driver about parking accommodations upon arrival. EDUCATION ENTRANCE School and youth groups who arrive in buses will be directed to our new Education entrance. This will improve the transition time and allow Future of Flight to provide a high-quality experience. Program start times will be pre-determined for either 9:30 or 10 a.m. Our education programs are typically 90 minutes long and include a lunch time opportunity for 30 minutes following each program. Upon arrival, groups staying for lunch can store their lunches on a cart provided by Future of Flight. Restrooms are available nearby. LUNCHROOM SPACE (FOR THOSE RESERVING PROGRAMS ON PAGES 4-7) With pre-reservations, one of two spaces will be reserved for your group. The Flightline Room (maximium of 53) or the tailfin space (maximum of 30) will accommodate two bus loads when used together. Student groups larger than 50 are required to work out those logistics in advance. Larger groups will use the same two spaces, but will be asked to stagger their lunch times before or after the scheduled program time. WHEELCHAIRS/MOBILITY Please notify us, upon booking your program, if anyone in your party will need mobility assistance, especially when booking the career tour, as transportation will need to be pre-arranged between the Future of Flight and The Boeing Company facilities. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Work with a cadre of teacher leaders to improve content knowledge and teaching strategies, and earn a Decide Now discount on registration for your class when you sign them up for one of our education programs. Workshops are also offered to try programs in advance, including Gliding into Innovation, the Boeing Career Tour, Xenoplanes, and Aerospace Maker Project.
