Board of Directors Chamber Calendar Chairman s Chat Fiscal Year Planning Work It Out Community Event Golf Outing Up with Women Leadership Link Networking Featured Ambassador Business Highlights Seeing a Short Distance Ahead - Always Plenty to be Done We can only see a short distance ahead, but we can see plenty there that needs to be done. Alan Turing You Chamber constantly strives to see a short distance ahead. The Board of Directors and staff are always looking for ways we can assist our members by providing workshops to improve customer service, to provide quality educational seminars, to provide resources, to monitor legislation, and to advocate for legislation that will reduce regulations, provide adequate educational funding, and other ways to make sure our member businesses continue to be successful. We do see there is plenty to be done. For instance, we see the Mike Bonney Chairman of the Board need to diversify our city s demographics. We do not want to fall into the demographic starvation situation many similar size communities face. To that end, your Chamber is fully committed to the Vision 20/20 Revitalization Plan. As many of you know, that plan consists of five (5) pillars designed to implement plans to facilitate and sustain a diverse economy, retain and attract young entrepreneurs, grow existing businesses, and plan for a robust economic future. We also see the need to continually advocate for small businesses on the local, state and national level. Your Chamber was represented at the Chamber Advocacy Day at the State Capitol, where representatives from Chambers of Commerce throughout the state met with their state representatives to discuss issues important to their members and communities. Your Governmental Affairs Committee meets on a monthly basis to strategize on issues important to small businesses. In addition, we are members of Mohave County Chambers Coalition that meets on a quarterly basis to strategize on issues important to Mohave County. Participation in your Chamber s Governmental Affairs Committee is open to any member in good standing. If you would like to become involved, please contact me or Kathy at the Chamber office. There is plenty to be done and together we can accomplish much!

Board of Directors Looks Longer Distance Ahead as Chamber s New Fiscal Year Approaches It s time to begin thinking about the end of one fiscal year and the beginning of another. The structure for the Chamber of Commerce has a July to June fiscal year. For the near future, the Board of Directors will be formulating the new year s budget, nominating the next slate of directors and planning the annual business meeting. A Board Advance is being planned for May so current, outgoing and incoming directors can review, realign and refresh the strategic plan for On Friday, June 9 the Annual Meeting and Celebration of Business will be held with this year s theme Out of This World. As planning progresses more information will be provided. Along with the Celebration of Business is the Annual Volunteer Awards presentation. Put on your thinking caps now so when you receive the nomination information you will have your choices ready to submit. If you are interested in being more involved, maybe one of the Chamber s committees would be a good fit for your interests. Please contact Niki Nickle, Membership & Special Events Manager for more details about what the commitment would be. 8 Board of Directors Chamber Calendar Chairman s Chat Fiscal Year Planning Work It Out Community Event Golf Outing Up with Women Leadership Link Networking Featured Ambassador Business Highlights Member Happenings Leadership Alumni Gathering will Launch LLH Network There are several hundred alumni who have graduated from the Havasu Leadership Development program now called Leadership Lake Havasu still living and working in Lake Havasu City. Those graduates are invited to join the Leadership Lake Havasu Network similar to a university alumni organization at a Leadership Alumni Gathering at Hangar 24 on Tuesday, April 25 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. All leadership alumni are invited to be part of this, says Nancy Darrow, chair of the Lake Havasu Chamber Foundation for Education & Leadership s Education Committee. This will give our alumni opportunities to meet socially and to be first in line for future leadership, motivational and education seminars and workshops. The Network will allow grads to stay up-to-date with the current program and volunteer opportunities that come up, she said. We need alumni to step up and volunteer right now we want our alumni back and this is one way to do it. It offers them opportunities to network with each other and lend their talents back into the program, kind of like a college or frat house association. The HLD/LLH graduates will help plan events and offer ideas on how to get the Network off the ground, Nancy said, as well as someone to take the lead on overseeing the Network. Graduates attending the April 25 Leadership Alumni Gathering (when the launch of the Network occurs) will be automatically enrolled for the first year in the fledgling network, open only to alumni and not to the general public. Interested alumni are also encouraged to be part of the Education Committee that meets on the second Thursday of the month at 4 p.m. at the Lake Havasu Area Chamber of Commerce office. To RSVP and for more information, contact Kathy Tippett, Director of Administration and Technology, kathyt@havasucchamber.com or Stories/Photos courtesy of Stan Usinowicz Communications

Leadership Link: Education was the Focus of Leadership Session by Stephanie Flenner Education/Continuing Education was the focus of the January Leadership Lake Havasu class. Meeting at the ASU Colleges at Lake Havasu, the morning began with a crash course in the EON (Entrepreneur Outreach Network) Program, presented by James Gray from the PED. Separating the class into two groups, we were given a product to reinvent. Each group gave their presentation, focusing on the marketing aspect of the product and the feel-good goal for each consumer, such as proceeds donated to an organization or recycle/reuse. The group then took a tour of the ASU campus, visiting many of the classrooms and social areas available to students. A walkthrough of the dorms concluded the tour. Traveling to WAVE/JTED, a presentation on continuing education was given by Jane Cruz of MCC, stressing the importance of furthering your knowledge and all of the avenues available to do so. Julie Sasseen of HRMC gave the class a walkthrough on the hiring process and how applications should include thorough job descriptions to avoid future confusion for employees. The next stop was LHHS where several members of the Student Council spoke about conducting their meetings and how they approach events at the high school. They also showed a video that was made during their recent state convention held in LHC. Back at ASU, the day was concluded by a Planning Fundraising Events presentation, given by Steve Greeley and Traceye Jones. They outlined the recent Citizens for Havasu Schools events and gave several pointers for planning your own fundraising event. James Gray represents EON discussing marketing strategies

Featured Ambassador: Tom Otero likes choices Chamber volunteerism offers For Tom Otero, joining the Lake Havasu Area Chamber of Commerce 17 years ago and his involvement in its work and play, have been a bit like making selections from an a la carte menu a little of this, some of that and more of the other thing. Tom Otero is involved. After moving his business, Mohave Electric, to Lake Havasu City in 1999, he joined the Chamber in 2000 and the same year, became an Ambassador. Since then, he s chaired the Board of Directors, and served on the Executive Committee and Tom Otero the Governmental Affairs Committee. He s a graduate of Havasu Leadership Development and Advanced Havasu Leadership Development. I just had an opportunity as a Chamber member to get involved in whatever I wanted to, whatever avenue I wanted to go if I can influence, as a Chamber member, whatever is going on Winterfest, the Balloonfest anything that I ll enjoy, I ll go ahead. Most recently, it s the Lake Havasu Chamber Foundation for Education and Leadership working diligently to put together an electrical apprenticeship program under CFEL s auspices. From this start, the hope is to expand into other trades, he said. It s very difficult to get trained personnel in this town. We want to pursue that angle and make it available to all the building trades. We hope someday to be able to build a strong labor pool to draw from. The program dovetails with the Vision 20/20 program, and the first class of four apprentices will soon convene at McAtlin Electric. The class is small, but it s a start, Tom says. Coupled with class will be 8,000 hours of on the job training in residential and small commercial work filling one of this small city s needs. We need them desperately in Lake Havasu City. When Baby Boomers are gone, there s nobody coming up, and we re trying to fill that void. And it s exciting to leave as a legacy. Tom has served on the board of directors of the Western Arizona Humane Society, and he s enthusiastic about its relocation to the former BLM headquarters on Sweetwater Avenue. The WAHS has been able to grow to a no-kill policy rarely does an animal need to be put down anymore, he says. Tom is a native of Luna, N.M. and a direct descendant of the Oteros who emigrated as Conquistadores from Northwestern Spain to the New World and Mexico 300 years ago this part of the American West was Mexico until the 19th century. He trained as an electrician and owned Mohave Electric in Utah before moving here to get away from snow. I m so happy, he said late last month. I love watching snow on CNN or NBC or CBS any station I love to watch it snow when I m sitting here in shorts. He enjoys riding out in the desert with just himself and a passenger. I know it s not the smartest thing to do, but if an old pioneer could do it with just a burro and a pickax, why can t I be smart enough to go out there in four-wheeler? I don t join any clubs to get in a line and follow each other for 80 miles through the desert.

Board of Directors Chamber Calendar Chairman s Chat Fiscal Year Planning Work It Out Community Event Golf Outing Up with Women Leadership Link Networking Featured Ambassador Business Highlights Member Happenings London Bridge Lions Club Gives Back to the Community in a Big Way There s no official ranking of service organizations in Lake Havasu City, but if there were, you d have to put the London Bridge Lions Club up near the top of the list this is a busy service club in our city. The 35 or so members of the club give back to the community, and recently this year s president of the 34-year-old club, Janet Lile, ticked off the events and services of the Lions Club. Our major focus is on vision-related service projects, she said. We recycle eyeglasses from 12 locations, and we have a visually impaired support group at the Senior Center. The group meets on the first Wednesday of the month at 1:30 p.m. We also do some assisted vision exams for low income families, with local optometrists, she said. In May, it sponsors a picnic for visually impaired senior citizens. The familiar annual White Cane Drive supports the Vision Program It makes you feel like you re giving to the people, said Janet. This emphasis on vision followed a 1925 challenge by Heller Keller to Lions Clubs to become Knights of the Blind. Today, there are 46,000 clubs in 204 countries and 122 clubs in Arizona. The service-oriented club gives back to the community in other ways. It sponsors the Leos, open to students ages from all three high schools and home-based students. No dues are charged, and Leos meet the first and third Tuesdays of the month at Lake Havasu High School. London Bridge Lions join the three Rotary International Clubs and the other Lions Club in the city annually to assist at the Havasu Balloonfest, and in 1976, the clubs raised $250,000. It also assists with parking at the Western Arizona Pyrotechnic Convention, another fundraiser, and it helps out at the Arizona State University Renaissance Faire with accounting and ticket collections. Stories/Photos courtesy of Stan Usinowicz Communications

We re proud of our scholarship funding, Janet says. We gave approximately seven scholarships to schools last year, and because of the Faire, there were six additional scholarships that we were able to present to ASU students. The flags of the 50 states and Old Glory that line McCulloch Avenue on holidays the Avenue of Flags are yet another club project. Upcoming this month with details to be announced: A shopping spree, with proceeds going to fund other community needs. Janet joined the club six years ago I enjoy working with people that are giving back to the community. The club separates its funds all funds raised in the community go to the community. Administrative funds are kept separate. Persons interested in the London Bridge Lions Club are welcome to attend meetings to learn more about the Lions Club, on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at the Golden Corral Restaurant, beginning at 6 p.m. Meetings last from an hour to an hour and a half. To join, there is an entrance fee of $35 and semi-annual dues of $40. London Bridge Lions Club LHC London Bridge Lions Club (928) Chamber Member Since 2010

Board of Directors Chamber Calendar Chairman s Chat Fiscal Year Planning Work It Out Community Event Golf Outing Up with Women Leadership Link Networking Featured Ambassador Business Highlights Member Happenings Success! 32nd Annual Winterfest Attracts Thousands Once Again A light spritz of rain about 10 a.m. on the first day of our 32nd Annual Winterfest Street Festival on Feb failed to dampen spirits and succeeded in keeping the weather cool and comfortable, says Niki Nickle. It lasted about 10 minutes. Niki, Membership and Special Events Manager says that thanks go to the co-chairs of this year s Winterfest, Eileen Nexsen and Donna McCoy, as well as the 54 volunteers who came out on Saturday at 3:30 a.m., through the end of the day, at various times, on Sunday. They will be invited to a post-event thank-you celebration in the near future, she said, with time, place and date to be announced. Niki said that while she didn t have a chance to talk to all of the 240- plus vendors on the street, those she did meet were ecstatic over the crowds and the cooler weather. Also receiving a big thumbs-up from the crowd was the Saturday afternoon performance by a Phoenix band, Lane Change, playing here for the first time. That, she said, meant standing room only at the beer garden. Though this was her inaugural year managing the event, Niki said, The event gets better every year, the volunteers told me, with this year being one of the better years. Everyone worked very hard to make Winterfest a success. Winterfest is the largest annual fundraiser for the Chamber the Chamber is funded entirely by membership investments and community events.
