2 Something to celebrate: entering the second decade of WOW Helping business reach new heights. Westpac has been helping business in PNG to fly high since And today we re doing even more. We ve recently launched the Verifone EFTPOS terminal, which is supported by a team of experts. Our award-winning Corporate Online Platform is in high demand. And we re continuing to expand our infrastructure and capabilities to meet the needs of government, corporate and institutional customers. It s all part of our commitment to supporting business in PNG for years to come. It is our great pleasure to invite you to nominate exceptional women from across Papua New Guinea for the Westpac Outstanding Women (WOW) awards. Of Westpac s achievements over a very long and proud history in PNG, we believe initiating the WOW awards and celebrating a decade of WOW last year is a stand out. Each year, the achievements of WOW award nominees and winners are as broad as they are impressive, and we can t wait to see who will be put forward this year. Looking back at the WOW alumni, which now comprises more than 100 past winners and finalists, you cannot help but be struck by the diversity of achievement. Some WOW women have managed to reach leadership roles within PNG s private or public sector. Others show outstanding leadership within communities or in humanitarian fields. Over the last few years many entrepreneurs have been nominated, reflecting the rise of women-owned businesses across PNG. But all of the WOW alumni have one thing in common. They believe in themselves and recognise their own WOW factor. They know that as women they can, and should, do anything and they believe in the enormous power of positive female role models. The WOW awards is for women from all parts of PNG, of all ages and education levels, and from all professional backgrounds. The program is designed to celebrate women across society and there are categories to suit everyone women involved in the private sector, the public sector, NGOs, in communities or entrepreneurship. There is no limit to the number of nominations you can submit, and we strongly encourage self-nominations. Every day, we see PNG women shine in homes, churches, communities, civil society, government, academia and increasingly in business and workplaces. These women are building a positive legacy for other women and girls, and changing PNG. Let s highlight their achievements and put them up on a pedestal. By nominating a woman for WOW you will not only celebrate one individual contribution but encourage other women and girls to reach for their professional capacity, and in doing so help PNG to reach its full social and economic potential. Westpac believes in a strong future for PNG, and we believe that women will be at the centre of its success. If you do too, then please nominate. 3 Westpac Outstanding Woman of the Year Award PricewaterhouseCoopers Corporate Sector Award Bosa Togs Bosa Togs is General Manager for IT at Telikom PNG and oversees the whole of Telikom s IT infrastructure, applications, data and the teams who drive development and innovation. She regularly achieves what others believe impossible, delivering major enhancements to improve services for Telikom customers across PNG, to tight budgets and deadlines. Bosa is both courageous and humble. She stood up and championed change for women at her organisation, with benefits, allowances and salary packages now equal for female and male colleagues. She also turned down the GM role she now holds when offered it a few years ago, wanting to develop her technical and leadership skills further so as to be best prepared to lead her colleagues well into the future. Recently, Bosa achieved a dual Masters through online learning: a Masters in IT and Masters in Business Administration. She did this at the same time as managing one of the biggest IT projects ever undertaken at Telikom and also maintaining family life and church commitments. She is a trustee on the Telikom Foundation Board. Public Sector Award Dr Lutty Amos Dr Lutty Amos leads Women s Heath Programs across the National Capital District, including the maternal health, gynaecology, youth, family planning and women s wellbeing programs at Gerehu Hospital and 23 urban clinics. Lutty used her public sector know-how to start the first ever public campaign on cervical cancer the Walk against Cervical Cancer raising awareness for all women but particularly those in disadvantaged areas and settlements where mortality rates are high. She is also leading a program which will for the first time provide comprehensive cancer and lifestyle disease screening for women, recognising that prevention is the key to saving the lives of women and knowing the impact losing a mother has on a family. Lutty was the first female medical doctor from Kagua Erave elctorate and the Southern Highlands Province. The Steamships Not for Profit Award Dorothy Lamin Koch-Waluta Working for Port Moresby City Mission, Dorothy Koch-Waluta passionately believes in the empowerment of young women and men in Papua New Guinea. For the past seven years, Dorothy has been devoted to City Mission where she has provided a number of functions including fundraising, marketing and administrative services. When she first joined the organisation, there were very few women and she helped to change the mindset of her colleagues, even in the face of challenges, eventually coming to take on a senior role in the organisation. Dorothy has overcome adversity. When her relationship became abusive, she found the strength to leave with the help of City Mission. It is this reason she mentors other women in a similar situation, and help them with the skills they need to provide for their families on their own. In the future, Dorothy dreams of running her own women s organisation that will support and empower women to leave abusive relationships, and change the dialogue about women s issues in PNG. The SP Brewery Entrepreneur Award The Trukai Community Award Annastascia Wanasawo Annastascia Wanasawo has been the President of the Nuku District Women s Network for 20 years. In this time, she has been committed to ensuring women and girls across PNG live in an equitable and fair society and achieve their goals. One of Annastascia s greatest achievements in this role was in conceiving and then building a women s resource centre which runs frequent literacy and business training courses. Her aim is to pass on skills to her community to help them develop economically. One of these workshops is in vegetable production which teaches community members to cultivate their land and support themselves by selling vegetables. It is her aspiration to help other women own their own businesses and become independent. Annastascia is passionate about gender equality and runs a workshop about healthy and strong relationships which is attended by more than 100 women and men, fostering a positive conversation about gender in the community. The IBBM Young Achievers Award Jacqueline Joseph Jacqueline Joseph founded Equal Playing Field to take on the domestic violence crisis in Papua New Guinea. As the Country Program Manager she works to inspire the next generation to rid their communities of violence and abuse. Equal Playing Field runs an eight week respectful relationships program and Jaqueline leads a team of nine staff and 20 volunteers. The organisation helps to change the cultural attitudes and behaviours that enable violence and abuse to occur, by organising mixed gender sports competitions alongside educational and development lessons. Jacqueline is committed to encouraging respect and helping to improve the quality of relationships for future generations. Jacqueline wishes to see the future generation become part of a global movement to provide innovative community solutions and improve the experience of women across PNG. She hopes that one day she will see her country become a safe place where women and children won t have to fear walking down the street at night. The Moore Printing Sports Award Julienne Leka-Maliaki Julienne Leka-Maliaki values passion and commitment, integrity and transparency, excellence and teamwork, and respect and ethics have been guided her throughout her career. It is these core values that have led her to become an inspiration for women and girls all across PNG. Julienne divides her time between acting as the Program Manager in the Economic Governance and Private Sector Development Program at the Australian High Commission and serving as the President of Netball PNG. At the Australian High Commission, Julienne plays a pivotal role in the management of Australia s relationship with PNG, through activities in trade, financial inclusion and innovation. Julienne is also a lifelong athlete, with a 16 year netball career, as captain of the national team and even representing PNG. Under her leadership, Netball PNG developed its first ever school outreach program which seeks to empower women and girls through sport. Social and community inclusion has become one of Netball PNG s key strategic goals. Julienne believes that success is seeing the fruits of your labour take place, and watching your community transform before you. Rita Jaima Paru Rita Jaima Paru started Dial-A-Lunch services from scratch in 2014, working out of a bedsitter. Dial-A-Lunch is now one of the country s best known catering services, with clients such as Coca-Cola Amatil and World Vision. Rita herself is well known for her entrepreneurial success and for raising the bar when it comes to service, integrity and food safety. Rita sees her business, with its commercial kitchen, as a real opportunity to give back to the community and help others. She not only employs and trains women to work at Dial-A-Lunch, but uses the kitchen to conduct life skills courses such as basic cooking, baking and sewing for disadvantaged women. Plans are in place to build a bigger kitchen to meet the demand for Rita s programs. Rita is a member of the Advancing PNG Leadership Network, a member of the Port Moresby Women s Masters Soccer team and Assistant Swimming Coach with Boroko swimming club. In 2014 she was also a WOW finalist. Earlier this year, Rita was named a recipient of the Global Women in Management leadership training programme by Exxon Mobil and Plan USA. Her dream is to have her children take over the business once they have completed quality education. 4 5
