3 Welcome to NFCC Connect, the National Foundation for Credit Counseling s 51 st annual conference. We welcome the more than 200 NFCC member agency executives, credit counselors and educators, creditor partners, government representatives and stakeholders from around the country and the world who are convening this week for an informative and engaging conference. Our nation s capital is a beautiful backdrop for networking, education and maybe even some sightseeing! Monday s Opening Plenary will set the tone of innovation and new ideas with Margaret Keating from Synchrony Financial followed by NFCC President and CEO Susan Keating s State of the Sector and a diverse panel of agency CEOs sharing their insights. Tuesday and Wednesday are packed with sessions about fundraising, retirement at risk, student loan counseling, connecting with small business owners, HUD training and so much more. On Tuesday evening we will spotlight the important work you all do everyday in your communities by recognizing the 2016 NFCC Awards of Excellence recipients. You will hear from four agencies as they share their best practices in education, counseling and community advocacy. The NFCC also wishes to recognize the numerous sponsors and exhibitors for their continued support of the NFCC mission and our membership. There are a number of creditors in attendance this year who will be participating in the creditor breakout sessions. Monday s Meet the Creditors session will introduce you to the key staff in attendance and provide sector-specific updates. He previously led the Bureau s Office of Enforcement. The CFPB s aim is to make consumer financial markets work for consumers, responsible providers and the economy as a whole. The bureau protects consumers from unfair, deceptive, or abusive practices and take action against companies that break the law, and arms people with the information and stepstools that they need to make smart financial decisions. CFPB is a government agency created after the 2008 financial crisis to protect consumers. Susan Koehler Senior Manager, Walmart Foundation/ Sam s Club Giving Program Koehler Under Susan s leadership, and with the Walmart Foundation, Sam s Club and the Sam s Club Giving Program have contributed more than $28 million to micro enterprise development, training and access to capital programs as the early start to its Small Business Economic Mobility Initiative. And while the needs of small businesses once closely mirrored consumer needs, today we have found that these consumers are much more technologically savvy and require more sophisticated products and services. This presents a new opportunity for member agencies to better meet the needs of these consumers and returns strong small businesses to communities across our country. 19 Making the Difference Awards The NFCC s Making the Difference Awards honor individuals who have made a significant contribution to assisting consumers with financial literacy, awareness and education. We, individually and as a country, benefit from their passion and dedication to improving lives through financial education. Chair s Award Richard Cordray Director Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Richard Cordray serves as the first director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). The CFPB s aim is to make consumer financial markets work for consumers, responsible providers and the economy as a whole. The bureau protects consumers from unfair, deceptive, or abusive practices and take action against companies that break the law, and arms people with the information and stepstools that they need to make smart financial decisions. CFPB is a government agency created after the 2008 financial crisis to protect consumers. Consumer Advocate Award Kathleen Kennedy Townsend Founder Center for Retirement Initiatives, Georgetown University Kathleen Kennedy Townsend has a distinguished history of accomplishment in the public arena, and for the last decade, has done the same in the private sector. She is a managing director at the Rock Creek Group, an investment management company and the founder of the Center of Research Initiatives at Georgetown University where she serves as a research professor. She was appointed chair of the Governor s Retirement Security Task Force for the State of Maryland. Susan joined Sam s Club, a division of Walmart Stores Inc. and a leading membership warehouse club, to lead public relations in She quickly volunteered to help with charity and community projects and to meet fellow Associates. In 2010, she was given the opportunity to lead the Sam s Club Giving Program and Community Involvement function for more than 600 clubs nationwide. Under Susan s leadership and with the Walmart Foundation, Sam s Club and the Sam s Club Giving Program have contributed more than $28 million to micro enterprise development, training and access to capital programs as the early start to its Small Business Economic Mobility Initiative, which ultimately aims to get more capital to micro and small business owners and to create jobs. Jerry Quinn manages Wells Fargo s Military Affairs Program, which includes development and oversight of military and veteran national partnerships, maintaining external relationships with the military community, including the Department of Defense, and providing counsel on military and veteran matters within the company. Quinn has worked in the banking industry for more than 20 years, and is in his 26th year with theu.s. Army.
