Orleans County 4-H Newsletter JANUARY 2018 INSIDE FEATURES Officer Training Public Presentations Bits and Bobs Club News Route 31, Albion, NY Phone: (585) Fax: (585) Nutrition In A Nutshell: Missy s Holiday Fun! Browned Butter Salty Sugar Cookies INGREDIENTS: 1 cup unsalted butter 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 large egg 1 & 1/2 teaspoons baking soda 1 & 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 teaspoon salt Coarse salt, for sprinkling tops of cookies 1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar DIRECTIONS: Place the butter in a medium saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently. Once the butter melts and begins to foam, continue to cook until brown specks begin to appear beneath the foam. The butter will have a nutty aroma. Remove from the heat and transfer to a glass bowl. Allow to cool. Whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside. Using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat the cooled butter, brown sugar, and sugar until combined. Add the egg and vanilla, and mix well. Reduce mixer speed to low. Gradually add the flour mixture, mixing just until combined. Refrigerate the dough for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350 F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone liners. Using about a tablespoonful of dough, roll into balls and place on the prepared pans. Flatten each ball slightly. Sprinkle coarse salt on the tops of cookies. Bake minutes, or until the edges of the cookies are browned and the centers are set. Cool in pans on wire racks for 5-10 minutes. Then, transfer the cookies to wire racks to cool completely. Public Presentations - Help is Available! What different types of presentations are there? Which one will work best for me? What can I do to improve my presentation? How are presentations judged? Do the judges accept bribes? If these are the questions keeping you awake at night, call the 4-H office at We re here to answer your public presentation queries and lend a helping hand if you re having trouble getting organized. We ll also be putting a printable resource online at orleans.cce.cornell.edu that describes the various types of presentations and includes a copy of the evaluation form for each category. If you d like someone from the office to attend one of your club meetings to give a public presentation about Public Presentations (haha), we re available to do that as well. See pages 4 and 5 for more on Public Presentations, including registration info.
PAGE 2 Cash Your Fair Checks by December 31, 2017 The 2017 fiscal year ends December 31, If you still have a fair check on hand, cash it NOW! Checks not cashed by this deadline will be void and considered a donation to the 4-H program. 4-H Online 4-H Online is the new online database used across NYS to keep 4-H organized. This new system allows each family to have access to their enrollment information so that YOU can make changes if needed. Eventually, we will also use this system to register for events, possibly even fair. If you would like a login and password to review your family information please, contact the office. Officer Training Senior Council will continue its tradition of offering officer training to members of 4-H clubs on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in January. Club officers should make plans to attend this event as it offers valuable information about running a club and is an ideal primer for members planning on joining Senior Council. Participants will get a t-shirt and pizza during the training. We also encourage all of the older 4-Her s in attendance to stay after the officer training and attend the Sr. Council meeting. These meetings are formal committee meetings with a touch of fun! The Sr. Council works on coming up with new program ideas, ways to promote 4-H, ways to improve current programs, and ways to just have fun and experience the community we live in. That probably all sounds pretty stuffy so here s a list of other things Sr. Council does from time to time: COOKIES! TRIPS! RESUME BUILDER! VOTING! TRAINING! GAMES! Officer Training Registration Form Monday, January Name: Age: Club: Officer Position: Phone: T-Shirt Size: Allergies/Health Concerns: Please turn in by January 2nd along with your $5 registration fee. This will be refunded to those who attend the training session. Registrations after the 2nd will not receive a shirt. Please contact the 4-H Office at in case of financial hardship.

The Orleans County 4-H Public Presentations Program and You! This year, Orleans County 4-H will offer three Public Presentations Days: Saturdays, February 3, 17, and 24. The 4-H Public Presentations Program is an opportunity for all 4-H members to improve their public speaking skills (Cloverbuds should do presentations for their club, but not at the county Public Presentations). In doing so, 4-H ers develop self-confidence, poise, self-esteem, stage presence, and knowledge. It is one of the most vital programs offered by 4-H. The range of topics and types of presentations is nearly limitless. You may have noticed some funny suggestions in the last few newsletters and the truth is that any of those would make great public presentations. The most important part of selecting a topic is that it s something you are interested in and knowledgeable about. The registration form for presentations is on the next page and can be returned by mail, in person, or via to the 4-H Office by Midnight on January 19. After entering, you should practice and prepare. It is an excellent idea to practice at least once with a friend who has presented before, a leader, or even swing by the 4-H Office and practice with us for some tips. General (Non-Horse) Presentations Most beginning presenters do either a demonstration or an illustrated talk. If you are 13 years old by January 1, you may have the opportunity to go to the Western District Public Presentations, and possibly the NYS 4-H Public Presentation event at the New York State Fair! However, you won t be eligible for the District or State Horse Communications event. Horse If you are a member of a horse club, or are participating in a horse-related project, and would like to do a presentation on horses, sign up for a horse presentation. Horse Presentations can be done on any day. You will want to pick up a copy of the NYS 4-H Horse Communications Contest Rules and Regulations from the 4-H Office or online. You will be presenting at the Education Center and will receive a confirmation letter or with more details. Participants in this contest have the opportunity to be considered for the Region I Horse Communications Contest. Please indicate on the Registration Form with a YES or a NO whether you would like to be considered or not (if you don t wish to be considered, points for length of time of the presentation will be eliminated). Cloverbuds Cloverbuds can do a presentation for their club. Leaders can submit a list of their cloverbuds who did a presentation for their club to the 4-H office. The office will print a certificate to present at the end of one of the presentation days or at your club meeting. Cloverbuds may also participate in the normally scheduled event. Again, if you have any questions, contact the office via mail, phone, , in person or even using a well trained pigeon. We want everyone to participate because this is a valuable experience and honestly, it can be super fun, and every session ends with a make your own sundae buffet!

Facts on the Side - Making the most out of your work Projects entered in Holiday Faire can be saved and re-entered in the county fair. Bits and Bobs, Things You Should Know Raise and Release Pheasants Each year the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) distributes day old pheasants to 4-Hers to raise for release. The deadline for requests is March 15. If you would like to consider this project, we have both a print copy of a raising pheasants guide and a copy of the DVD that goes along with the project. If you are interested in raising and releasing these day old chicks, please contact the office to learn more, or tell us the number of chicks you would like to order. Chicks come the first week of June. Orleans County 4-H HPDC Frosty Fun Day Clinic HPDC is finalizing details for the January 2018 Frosty Fun Day Clinic. Details will be sent out via in early January. Be on the lookout! If you make your public presentation visual aid, it can also be entered in the county fair. If you start taking pictures of your 4-H project work now, you ll be better prepared for project records - plus you can enter those pictures in the fair. Do you have English homework or projects? These might be ideal entries in the county fair communication division. Are you in an art class at school? You probably are making project after project that could be entered in the fair. If you start collecting these items in a tote or box now, you might be shocked by how many exhibits you enter this year! Re-Enroll, please, now, seriously! With the year ending and new year beginning, we have a list and we re checking it twice of people who have failed to re-enroll. The month of January will be the final opportunity as the office will be working to send s, phone calls, and real honest to goodness mail to all the families who have not completed reenrollment paperwork. After this, you will be asked to no longer participate in programming until your paperwork is complete. This means no fair, no public presentations, no award trips or other fun. Leaders and volunteers January will also be the month we will start contacting you about re-enrollment. MANY leaders have reached the point when background checks have expired and need to be re-run. Similar to the 4-Hers, we will start with , then make phone calls, and finally send real mail. The goal is to have all this paperwork collected by the end of February. For everybody who has already re-enrolled, you are a superstar!
Happy Holidays from all of the Staff at Extension. We will be closed from December 23 to January 1. If you have a 4 H emergency, rpb23@cornell.edu if your 4 H emergency is you have too many Christmas Cookies, he will respond right away!!!! Enjoy this me with your friends and families! 8 Orleans County Cornell Coopera ve Extension Route 31 Albion, NY Orleans County 4 H Youth Development Program Mandatory 4 H Family Adult Training Beginning this year, the office is requiring that all parents of 4-H members, leaders and superintendents attend a brief training on conduct during fair week and all 4-H events.
