Dae Grodin from Dog-Abilities will be instructing the class in helping teach 4-H kids and dogs the necessary skills for obedience, impulse control, and general everyday living. Our first meeting is an Orientation class with no dogs on Jan. 5th at 6:00pm at the Durr Annex in Edgewood, lasting 75 minutes. All other classes (Jan. 12, Jan. 19, Jan. 26, Feb. 2 and Feb. 9) will run about an hour and will have a mix of dog training and club activities where students can work on their dog knowledge and human training skills. Those wanting to train for the local and state 4-H Dog shows will resume training through July and August. To be eligible for this class, students need to be at least 9 years old with dogs 6 months or older. All other 4-H requirements apply. The cost of this class is $25. Registration will be online. 4-H RECOGNITION POINTS LOG SYSTEM Available for The Kenton County 4-H Recognition Points Log is a system for each 4-H er to record everything they ve done throughout the program year. A designated number of points is awarded for a variety of activities. These logs are used to determine the outstanding boy and girl award that is presented each year at the 4-H Recognition Banquet. They are also helpful when applying for the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Honors. The 4-H Recognition Points Logs are available at the extension office in the foyer next to the record books. Or on line at: kentoncountyextension.org. Be sure to download and save changes each time you make a change because changes are not automatic. 4 Page 4 H ORSE EDUCATION HOURS Before you can participate in any 4-H horse project or activity, you must have 6 hours of Equine Education delivered by a Kenton County Certified Horse Volunteer Leader, between September 1, 2016 and April 1, Horse Education hours are earned by attending horse club meetings. Kenton County has two horse-related clubs. The Blazin Bridles club promotes riding skills. For youth with a love of horses, but who don t own a horse there is the Ghost Riders club. In this club, youth learn about horses, but do not ride. Any child age nine and older is invited to join the fun. Club members gain a sense of belonging from the comradeship with others of similar interests and varying ages. The horse program helps youth develop desirable character traits including leadership, initiative, self-reliance, responsibility and sportsmanship. They become better prepared for citizenship responsibilities by working in groups and supporting projects and activities. This program also helps 4-H members enhance their horsemanship knowledge and skills and learn more about the business of breeding, raising and training horses, mules or ponies. In addition, 4-H members develop a greater affection for, and humane attitude toward, animals; gain an appreciation for horseback riding as a healthy, wholesome form of recreation; and learn more about safety precautions to prevent injury to themselves, their mounts, and others. Other county events include the ride/drive program and county fair. District-wide events include horse judging contests, horse shows and horsemanship camps. State-level competitions include special contests and shows during the summer. For more information on the 4-H Youth Development Horse Program contact Mary S. Fair H ORSE CAMP The Saddle Up Club in Alexandria will be hosting a Horse Camp, this summer at the Alexandria Fair Grounds. All youth must complete 6 horse education hours to attend. All youth attending must be accompanied by an adult that has filled out the volunteer paperwork and been CPS approved. BLAZIN BRIDLES CLUB NEWS Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday December 6, 2016 at the Durr Center, Marshall Road. 7 4-H Youth Development Page 7 4-H CLUB NEWS The picture to the right shows the Be the E members from their November meeting. They made tie-dye shirts and had good success with them. Their next meeting will be on Monday, Dec. 6:30 pm at the Kenton County Extension Office, Marshall Road. New members are always welcome. Be the # is open to any youth 13 or older interested in learning to start their own business. Council Pinterest Christmas Party a Success Evergreen Tree Recycling 4-H Council would like to thank all who attended the Pinterest Christmas 4-H Council Fund Raiser. A good time was had by all. The picture to the left shows Melinda Martino holding a craft she made that day. Where: Durr Extension Office, Marshall Road (Off of Taylor Mill Road) Help us make mulch for our demonstration gardens! Follow the signs and drop trees off into the fenced area between December 26 and January 12th. (Trees will NOT be accepted after January 12th!) 4-H Poultry Club The meeting dates will be: December 9; 4:30 p.m. January 13; 4:30 pm February 10; 4:30 pm March 10; 4:30 pm April 14; 4:30 pm (date might change) May 12; 4:30 pm (Parents/guardians please stay for the first part of the initial meeting to enroll your 4-H member) All meetings will be held at the Kenton County Extension Office, Marshall Road. You can participate in addition to your regular 4-H group. You do not have to have chickens. We have begun securing several guest speakers to teach us about Care of Poultry, Animal Diseases, How To Make An Omelet, Breeds and Showmanship.
