The annual Frederick County Spelling Bee did not disappoint and culminated with Frederick Classical Charter School seventh grader, Charles Millard, taking home the trophy. The second-place trophy went to Urbana Middle School student Nikhil Kurian. Both Millard and Kurian are no strangers to the bee. Millard placed second in the competition last year and has been a speller the last three years of the bee. This is Kurian s second time at the Frederick County Spelling Bee. The 15-letter winning word was contemporaneous, existing or occurring in the same period of time. Millard will now move on to represent Frederick County at the Scripps National Bee in Washington, D.C. in May. He will join other students from across the United States and around the world in competing in this prestigious event. Millard s Spelling Bee prize includes hotel accommodations and $1,000 to cover transportation and other expenses. Also included in the event prizes are a Webster s Third New International Dictionary awarded to the winner and a Merriam-Webster s Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition for the runner-up. Both prizes were awarded by Merriam- Webster. Door prize drawings were held for spellers and the schools alternates. 8 MYERSVILLE GROUND BREAKING A New Library Coming to Myersville Frederick County Public Libraries is set to expand its system with the addition of a long-awaited library for Myersville. Construction for the new library will begin this summer with the goal to open the library s doors in the summer of The 7,000-square-foot library will be located at the site of Myersville s original Town Hall on Harp Place. To reflect Myersville s history, the building design will incorporate space to display Trolley #150, generously donated by the Easterday family, one of the original trolley cars in service in Myersville. To learn more about the upcoming construction, follow Frederick County Public Libraries on social media or visit fcpl.org. NEW EARLY LITERACY SPACES Early Literacy Play and Learning Spaces Open at Urbana and Walkersville Libraries 6 FCPL.ORG Two new early literacy play and learning spaces recently opened at Frederick County Public Libraries one at the Urbana Regional Library and one at the new Walkersville Branch Library. In February, Urbana Regional Library opened its space, called World Market. Designed as an interactive world market with a farmer s market truck and market stall, the space creates unique learning opportunities through play for the library s youngest customers. Walkersville s new library, which opened to the public on March 10, also features a dedicated early literacy play and learning space. Called the Dairy, the space reflects Walkersville s agricultural heritage and includes a dairy truck and farmhouse. Benefits of Learning through Play Designed to enhance school readiness, early literacy play and learning spaces provide children fun, hands-on learning activities that help build important academic skills. Spaces such as the World Market and the Dairy are proven to increase picture book circulation while also preparing children for kindergarten and beyond. Generous Community Support The Dairy and the World Market would not have been possible without the support of many generous donors. Public funding supports the library by providing buildings, books, and staff. With the support of the community, the library system can offer innovative spaces and services.

9 SUMMER FAVORITES Frederick County Public Libraries (FCPL) invited a few friends from around the community to share their favorite summer books and road trip songs. FCPL librarians have also compiled a great selection of summer reads for all ages baby to adult at fcpl.org/booklist. Check them out! THE LITTLE FRIENDS OF THE WALKERSVILLE LIBRARY Children s Center of Walkersville s Little Friends of the Walkersville Library are proud to be enthusiastic supporters of early childhood literacy and programs. The Dolphins class (4 year olds) in particular reminded us how important libraries are by creating their own self-published class book, Sonny s Boot, which has been sold in a fundraising effort for the new Walkersville Branch Library. Favorite Summer Read: The Relatives Came. Filled with playful images, it captures the fun of road trips to visit faraway family. It demonstrates the importance that each family member has in helping tend to a household and reinforces the vital sense of community togetherness. Favorite Road Trip Tune: "Wheels on the Bus" KEN OLDHAM As the president and CEO of United Way of Frederick County, Ken Oldham is part of a hardworking and talented team that fights for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in the Frederick County community. He lives with his son and his partner, Melissa, in Point of Rocks. Favorite Summer Read: This summer, I read The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It s a mesmerizing and piercing father/son tale. The final pages were among the best I ve ever read. Favorite Road Trip Tune: My road trip album of late has been Radiohead s The Bends. I found myself hitting repeat on Fake Plastic Trees several times in a row. Gravity always wins. DR. THERESA R. ALBAN SYDNIE GROSSNICKLE Dr. Alban has served as superintendent of Frederick County Public Schools since In 2017, she was named Maryland Superintendent of the Year. She and her husband live in New Market and are the parents of two grown children. Favorite Summer Read: Forty Autumns by Nina Willner. Typically, I love historical fiction because the stories make the history more meaningful to me. Well, this true story about a family divided by the Berlin Wall was poignant and compelling. It offered an emotional glimpse into the reality of the Cold War and its impact on people in many nations. Favorite Road Trip Tune: Impossible to choose, but a CD always in my car for a long drive is Keith Urban s Greatest Hits! Sydnie Grossnickle is the Maryland Dairy Princess and was born and raised in Frederick County. Favorite Summer Read: One of my favorite summer reads is Out and About at the Dairy Farm by Andy Murphy. I love reading this book to kids because it not only talks about the different activities that take place on the farm, but it also explains the process that brings the milk to our tables! Favorite Road Trip Tune: When my sister and I go road tripping, our favorite summer tune is Summer by Calvin Harris. This is one of our all-time favorites because it just makes you want to dance! 30 LIBRARY LOVE STORIES Mrs. Eleanor Ellie Murray Bookmobile Donor I grew up in Elyria, Ohio, and after high school, I enrolled in Missouri College and got a degree in human relations preparing me to work with adults in recreation fields. My first job was adult program director in Riverside, Calif., where I learned about the opportunity to become a recreation director for the U.S. Army in Korea. Korea was still recovering from the war. The TV show, "Mash," gives you an idea of how it was living in a tent with a hose bringing in water, fuel for the stove, and doing my laundry on the floor of the officers shower. When I came back to the states, I continued to work in recreation centers, first at Fort Wolters, Texas, then two summers at Camp Drum, New York, and finally at Fort Ritchie, Md. The library there was small but up-to-date where I could at least have access to a variety of other military material. Even now, many years later, I still like to read books based on the military. Growing up as a child, my much older sisters bought me books, which I treasured. It wasn t until high school that I could state my love for reading since the city library was near the school. I d come home with armloads of books I d share with my sisters. Many nights a light would burn until the early morning, despite school or work on the early agenda. I am not one of those people who has a computer or smartphone; I like to read and write letters. It may seem oldfashioned, but I have had some of the most meaningful relationships this way. I have a pen pal who lives in England and another pen pal, Del, whom I have written every week for over 45 years. Today, I don t go anywhere without a book with me; I always need something to read. Since the passing of my husband, my greatest joy has been the Frederick County Public Libraries Community Bookmobile. I do not get out much, and I do not watch much TV, except during baseball season, so my trips to meet the Bookmobile are always a highlight. The librarian, Chris Long, is so good with all his patrons and he provides exceptional customer service on the Bookmobile. Over the many, many years that I ve been visiting the Bookmobile, I have gotten to know him, and I m so thankful for the work he does. Ultimately, I decided to make a gift to support the Bookmobile because it is so important to me, and many people like me. These days, we live in a technical age, and everyone is in love with their phones. I want to be sure that the Bookmobile stays around for those who still love the feeling of a real book in their hand. 31 GIVING BACK A Lasting Legacy: Dorsey Quiet Study Room At the opening reception for the new Walkersville Library on March 9, 2018, a ribbon was cut on the Dorsey Quiet Study Room. The first of its kind in the Frederick County Public Libraries system, this space will be a quiet retreat from those looking to take a break from the busy hustle and bustle of everyday life at the library. What is also special about this new space is its namesake, Tommy Dorsey ( ). When he was born in 1942, Lawrence Allen Dorsey, Jr. was named after his father, Lawrence Dorsey, a Frederick County commissioner. However, the nurses immediately began calling him Tommy after the famous Tommy Dorsey, the Sentimental Gentleman of Swing and leader in the Big Band era of music, and the name stuck. Born in Frederick and a lifelong resident of Woodsboro, Tommy Dorsey was a graduate of Walkersville High School. He would go on to receive a degree from the University of Maryland and his Juris doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law. Tommy served in the U.S. Army before practicing law and later serving as Frederick County state s attorney. Throughout his whole life, Tommy put a high value on community engagement and public service. He served on many boards, including the Mental Health Advisory Committee, the United Way, and the YMCA of Frederick County. He was also involved in other organizations, including the Walkersville High School Alumni Association, Woodsboro Fire Co., Woodsboro Lutheran Church, and was a member of the Frederick Jaycees, Frederick Toastmasters Club, and the Rotary Club of Frederick. When asked about Tommy s legacy, Walkersville Burgess and assistant state s attorney, Chad Weddle, said, Tommy s legacy lives through the many lasting relationships he fostered through mentorship. He was a role model for many young people in the community, and to him, they were all his children. Tommy was always positive and a friendly face who touched many lives during his lifetime. The Walkersville High School Alumni Association made a memorial gift to the new library in Tommy s name to honor him and continue his life s work to support youth and education through the creation of an innovative early literacy play and learning space, the Dairy. Tommy served as president of the Walkersville High School Alumni Association and was instrumental in getting it reincorporated in the late 90s. The organization provides vital resource for school students including uniforms, a new theater curtain, and most importantly, scholarships for high school students to attend college or a vocational school. The alumni association hosts several fundraising events throughout the year, including an upcoming BINGO event on Sunday, Oct. 21, You can learn more about the Walkersville High School Alumni Association by visiting education.fcps. org/whs/node/784 or by ing sandyz528@comcast.net.
