THE OFFICERS ARE MAKING THIS CHANGE TO BRING THE START TIME IN LINE WITH THE START TIMES OF OTHER COUNCIL MEETINGS, AND BASED ON SUG- GESTIONS FROM NU- MEROUS MEMBERS OF THE COUNCIL. FIRST DEGREES WILL STILL START AT, WITH THE BUSINESS MEETINGS STARTING IMMEDIATELY THERE- AFTER. FURTHER RE- MINDERS WILL BE SENT OUT AS WE AP- PROACH THE MARCH MEETING. PLEASE CONTACT ANY OF THE COUNCIL OFFICERS IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS CHANGE. The recycling bins have arrived for small electronic items, including cellular and cordless phones, laptops, notebooks, ink and print cartridges, digital cameras (still and video), MP3 players, GPS devices, calculators, radar detectors, routers and modems and E-book readers. We will also collect items that can be sold on Ebay, such as multi-line business phones, Legos, designer purses, die cast model cars, other electronics, Fisher Price toys, cookie jars, sporting goods, Halloween costumes and pet clothes. The items will be taken and recycled by Recycling Avenue, an organization that provides job opportunities for the physically challenged. 2 Membership/Activation/Retention GET INVOLVED KEEP INVOLVED Greetings for February, Our First, Second, and Third Degree on January 30th brought 20 new members to the Order, 8 of whom are new members of our Council, and saw 57 Brother Knights learn the principles of unity and fraternity during the Second and Third Degree ceremonies. Please join us in welcoming Robert Crabbe, Michael Manthie, Robert Martin, John Morrissey, John O Malley, Tim Panzica, Brian Paulsen and William Schroeder to Holy Rosary Council. Thanks to all who came out as a participant or as a helper for our big annual Major Degree ceremony. You will see on the calendar for March 2011, we will have our next First Degree before the Business. There is a big drive on to get even more members so our Grand Knight looks good down at the upcoming State Convention. According to the stats just in, we were at 438 members as of , so the new members bring number to 446. For anyone who is a possible or probable for the First Degree, please get the name to me, John Morrow, at (c) (my cell number was listed wrong last month), (H) or by morrow.john59@yahoo.com. Columbian Booster Award Dinner Tony Beaudette, our Past Grand Knight and District Deputy, is being honored with the Columbian Booster Award for the many accomplishments he has had for our Council and for the K of C as a whole. The award dinner is being held on Thursday, March 31st, at the Wellington. The Council is subsidizing a portion of the cost for the dinner for those that wish to attend. The final per person cost for attending the dinner will be based on the number of members attending, and will be no more the $20/ person. Marriage Renewal The Council Marriage Renewal is scheduled for Sunday, February 13th, at Addolorata Village (555 McHenry Rd., Wheeling). Mass with Fr. Nick will begin at noon, and will be followed by a hot meal prepared by the nuns. The cost for attending the event is $20/couple. Officer/Board Opening Joe Wendling has announced that he will be leaving the Council to pursue new employment opportunities in another state. We wish Joe and his family well in their new venture and location. As a result of Joe's departure, we have an opening for the Recording Secretary for the Council through the end of June, and an opening on the Building Corp Board for the remainder of Joe's term that runs to September If you are interested in the Recording Page 2 Secretary office, contact Scott Baxendale at baxendale99@yahoo.com or If you are interested in being considered for the position on the Building Corp. Board, contact Dean Sordyl at (847) Per the Council Bylaws, the new Recording Secretary will be elected by Council vote at the March Business. The new member of the Building Corp. Board will be elected by the Board at their next meeting on Tuesday, February 22nd. Lenten Fish Fries For the third year, we will be hosting Fish Fries on Fridays throughout Lent. As in the past, the doors will open at, and food will be served until around 7:30-8:00 P.M. Additional help is needed to make sure the customers are taken care of and the cooks are not overburdened. If you are interested in helping with cooking or serving at one or more of the Fish Fries, please contact Ken Kudla at pkkudla@comcast.net or Remember in Prayer We all know someone who is in need of, or can use, prayers. Ed Smetana is organizing a bus trip downtown to the Irish Center on St. Patrick s Day. The bus will depart at 10:00 A.M. and return around 4:00 P.M. The cost for the ride is $10/person in advance, or $15 on the St. Patrick s Day Bus K of C Hall Rental MEMBERS DID YOU KNOW THE HALL IS AVAILABLE FOR RENTAL FOR YOUR NEXT BIG EVENT OR GET TOGETHER? Volunteers will unload a semitruck load of food and packages for needy families. The packaged items will then be distributed to families that morning. To be eligible to join you must have been a Knight of Columbus for at least 6 months, and have taken your 2nd and 3rd Degrees. Our next 4th degree will be on April 9th. There was a lot of activity in late January that we believed merited inclusion in the newsletter. Consequently, the editing process ran past our normal deadline. We use our best efforts to get the newsletter out on time, and will renew our efforts in the coming months. One of the events that requires special mention but could not be included in this newsletter is the Council Free Throw Shoot Out that took place on Friday, January 28th. More details will be provided in the March newsletter. Due to low turnout in previous years, we had considered canceling the event. Al Vermiglio did not want to see that happen. Al volunteered to resuscitate the event, and worked very hard to advertise the event to the local schools and to get various businesses in our area to provide prizes and other sponsorships for the Shoot Out. Al s efforts bore fruit when we had 56 participants show up and compete. Thanks to Al s service to the Council, we anticipate continuing the Shoot Out for the foreseeable future. Vivat Jesus!
