2 Welcome to UCSC Welcome and Congratulations! This is a very exciting time in your life as you begin your new journey learning more about yourself and the world around you. Every year students tell us that a key factor to their success is getting involved on campus and making a difference in their community. We expect you to take advantage of this week to learn as much as possible about your new environment. Fall Welcome Week has been planned for you to learn about the academic resources available, to become familiar with the campus, and to learn about the Santa Cruz community. Use this guide to learn about the many workshops/events taking place campus-wide during Fall Welcome Week. Notice that some academic and college workshops are REQUIRED. Your academic and social transition to UC Santa Cruz is extremely important to us. We consider you a partner in your academic and social success here at UC Santa Cruz. Therefore we expect you to actively participate in the many programs and services this first week and well beyond. So, start now and begin making connections! 1
3 Welcome to Oakes Welcome to Oakes College and UC Santa Cruz! There are a number of things you ll need to accomplish during your first several days on campus. This Welcome Week Guide is designed to help lead you. Use it to learn about the many workshops, orientations, office hours and events across campus during Welcome Week. If you need more information ask an Oakes Welcome Week Leader (OWL), Community Assistant (CA), Neighborhood Assistant (NA), or a member of our college staff. 4 3 Campus Welcome Week Throughout Welcome Week, there are a number of offices providing extra welcome week services to new students. Here is a list of the services that are provided throughout Welcome Week for students. Take advantage of them while they re available! ID Card Services: Open To ALL Students Friday (9/26) to Friday (10/3) 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. ID Card Services Office (Quarry Plaza, near Bay Tree Bookstore) Photos for student IDs; government issued ID required along with Student ID number. Card received at the time of service. Students who took their Student ID picture at Summer Orientation may pick up their IDs at their colleges after September 15. Also, open to all replacements, exchanges, and make-ups. Commercial Services Orientation Fair & Poster Sale Friday (9/26) to Monday (9/29) 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Quarry Plaza Visit Dorm Central at the Bay Tree Bookstore to equip your new living quarters with all you need to move in! From dorm fridges and microwaves to lamps, bedding and housewares. Select posters to decorate your room. Talk to local bank representatives about new accounts and wireless providers about phone service. Register to vote, buy your Boardwalk Frolic ticket, look at special computer deals for UC students, and more.

Staff will be available for assistance during Welcome Week. Phone support available 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. at Fall Welcome Week Information Table Friday (9/26) to Tuesday (9/30) 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Quarry Plaza Students from the Campus Orientations Office are available to answer questions about the Welcome Week schedule or any other questions you may have about the campus. Library Cards Friday (9/26), Monday (9/29) to Thursday (10/2) Intersession Library Hours: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. McHenry or Science & Engineering Library To activate your card bring your UCSC Student ID to the main desk and let them know you want to activate your card. 4
6 University Library Tours McHenry Library: Fri (9/26) & Mon (9/29) to Wed (10/1) 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. Thurs (10/2) & Fri (10/3): 1 p.m. Science & Engineering Library Fri (9/26), Mon (9/29) to Wed (10/1): 1:00 p.m. Tour the renovated McHenry Library. Attractions include the Global Village Café, the Information Commons, group study rooms, and much more; or take a tour of the Science & Engineering Library. You will also learn about the library s services and collections, such as borrowing course textbooks, online research databases, the Media Center and the video game room. Tours run approximately 30 minutes. Shot Clinic Monday (9/29) to Wednesday (10/1) 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Student Health Center (across from Colleges Nine and Ten) Students may receive immunization shots for the following: Appointment needed - please call (831) to schedule. Students in college live in large groups and are at risk for communicable diseases. The American College Health Association strongly recommends that college students are fully immunized. Receive immunizations or have your immunization records reviewed for the following: Hepatitis B ($121 each - series of 3 required), meningitis ($146), MMR ($87), tetanus/pertussis (Tdap) ($77), HPV (Gardasil) ($150 each - series of 3 required), Varicella (Chicken Pox) ($128), and Influenza (Flu) ($25). All of the above mentioned vaccines are 100% covered by the UC health insurance plan. Proof of Hepatitis B vaccination for students younger than 19 years of age on 9/21/13 is the only vaccination required for enrollment. The other vaccinations are highly recommended by the CDC and the American College Health Association. Please have your immunization records with you. 5

Financial Aid and Scholarship Office Sat: 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Mon - Fri: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 205 Hahn Student Services Advisers are available on a drop-in basis to assist students and their families with any questions regarding their financial aid awards, loan requirements, and more. Office of the Registrar Monday through Wednesday: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 190 Hahn Student Services Open for general questions about registration, course enrollment, residency, and enrollment verification. Student Housing Services Sat: 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Mon - Wed: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 104 Hahn Student Services Advisers are available on a drop-in basis to assist students with any questions regarding housing contract policies and procedures, housing/dining charges, payment plans, meal plans, and more. Helpful Tips Now and throughout the year, if you are locked out of your room: 8am to 5pm: Visit the Oakes Student Life Office to check out a temporary key. Analytical Writing Placement Exam 12:30-3:30 p.m. Oakes 105 This exam is required of all entering frosh who did not take the May AWPE and did not satisfy ELWR via other means. Students should pre-pay for the exam at If they qualify for reduced/no fees, the web site will make this clear when they log on. *Students needing exam accommodation should contact the Disability Resource Center at least one week before the exam at or by at 13
15 There is a fee for this exam, which students are expected to pay in advance via this web site: Be sure to print out the receipt for your payment and to bring it with you to the exam. SAFE Slugs: Promoting Health and Safety in College 4:00 p.m.- 5:30 p.m. Media Theater M110 SAFE Slugs will cover topics including sexual assault, dating violence and stalking; including how to prevent it, intervene and support survivors. Mandatory for all new students, attendance will be taken at this event. Be sure to bring your student ID. Oakes Senate Barbeque 12:00 p.m. 1:30 p.m. Oakes Upper Lawn Enjoy a delicious community BBQ sponsored by your amazing Oakes Senate. Meet some of the Oakes Senate officers and get to know what the government can do. Interested in participating in the voice of the Oakes Student Body? 17 Ask Your OWL! 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Oakes Upper Lawn Our Oakes Welcome Week Leaders (OWLs) will be hosting an ask-meanything session on the Upper Lawn to help you with anything you may need to know Boardwalk Frolic 6:00-10:30 p.m. Rides, dancing, and exclusive use of Neptune s Kingdom Arcade. With ticket, you get free parking, and special TAPS bus transportation with UCSC ID. Free tickets for laser tag, bowling, miniature golf, one return ride ticket and $3 in Boardwalk Bucks for food! UCSC s student government organization is called the Student Union Assembly. Come meet the elected student body officers and find out how you can get involved. OPERS Fall Festival 3:00-6:00 p.m. Inside East Field House Complex The Fall Festival is a great opportunity to see how you can be active and involved in student life at UC Santa Cruz. Come visit the tables and talk to representatives from student groups and organizations, recreation and sports clubs, fraternities and sororities, health and wellness classes and services, academic resource offices, environmental groups, student media, ethnic resource centers, and more! UCSC Dining Services provides a farmer s market style dinner on the field for meal card holders, there is music, student performances, a portable rock-climbing wall, and the best view of the Monterey Bay! The Fall Festival is a ZERO WASTE event. Eight recycling stations will be set up around the event. All plates, utensils and food are composted, thanks to UCSC Dining Services. We also encourage you to bring a reusable water bottle with you and visit our water stations for refills (water bottles available for purchase at cost courtesy of the Recreation Dept.) 18

25 Thursday, October 9 African American Resource and Cultural Center s Formal Opening & Welcome Reception for the Black Cultural Conference 5:00-8:00 p.m. Stevenson College (Stevenson Event Center) This formal opening and welcome reception for the Black Cultural Conference promotes the rich heritage of all students across the African diaspora which celebrates the African American, African and Caribbean populations. All allies are encouraged to participate. This event highlights bringing new students, transfer students, returning students, alumni, community members, faculty, allies and staff from a wide array of backgrounds together to fellowship and participate in a campus event that celebrates the rich diversity of UC Santa Cruz! Come on out and use this event as an opportunity to network with other students, faculty and staff members. This is a great kick off event, to the Black Cultural Conference being held on Saturday, October 5, 2013, Stevenson Event Center, beginning at 9:30 am. This year s keynote speaker will be the Honorable Judge Kelvin Filer from Compton, CA. Come one, come all--good discussions & networking! Light refreshments will be served. WEL-COME OUT!
