3 Arts and Culture County or Counties Served* Please check the primary county served by the program/project for which you are requesting funds. Wallace Communities Served* Please list the primary community served by the program/project for which you are requesting funds. We are serving largely in Wallace County, but our program ties closely into the entire Smoky Hill Trail region across Western Kansas. We are committed education of children and families across our region. Strategic Doing Project* Was this application generated through Strategic Doing initiative? No Target Population* Please check one or more populations served by the program/project for which you are requesting funds. All Project Description* Briefly describe the program/project for which you are requesting funds. "The Grand Reunion of Forsyth Scouts and Battle of Beecher Island 150th" at Fort Wallace is a re-creation and discussion of the events at Fort Wallace leading directly into the "Battle on the Arickaree" involving a novel "Special Forces" military unit, the 10th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers and the Plains Indian Tribes of Arapaho, Kiowa and Cheyenne. This story is depicted in movies, novels and is the subject of many paintings, including one honored in the Kansas Statehouse. As shown in last summer's Fort Wallace event "The Great Fort Wallace and Western Kansas 1867 Exposition," the sweep of history can be powerfully portrayed in the words of historians and visually demonstrated with sights, sounds, smells, and human exchange. It is the passion of the Fort Wallace Museum to tell the stories as completely as possible and this means bringing in Indian people (sometimes from a considerable distance; there are no Indians in presently in Western Kansas that we know of) as well as expert representation of the authentically mounted Buffalo Soldiers, who rode to the rescue of the Forsyth Scouts from Fort Wallace. Through the programming on Sept. 8-9, attendees will understand implicitly the type of people who took part in these conflicts, their lives and livelihoods and WHY they were here. The narration of the people who literally "wrote the book" will give the researched facts of the story. These historians, re-enactors and the public will take part in encampments, troop reviews, meals, and ceremonies together, bringing deeper meaning to the stories of the past. This event will be the best type of historical programming for children, as undertaken by the Strategic Doing Sub-Committee. Printed On: 25 July 2018 Requests of $5,000 or less 3

4 Grant Request Description* If funded, how will you specifically use the Dane G. Hansen funds? We will use the funds to cover fees and travel expenses for some of the historians and re-enactors who are essential to programming that tells the COMPLETE story of the Battle of Beecher Island. We have tried to realistically show that many of these well-known historians have heavily discounted their fees; for example, Jerome Greene is probably the most celebrated Indian Wars author living, and he is attending the Beecher Island event asking only for expenses. These funds will bring nationally-acclaimed figures to Western Kansas for a story that deserves them. Project Objectives* What do you hope to achieve and how will it benefit the people of Northwest Kansas? We hope to further tell the stories of the history of Western Kansas, and explain it in the scope of national history. The benefit is multi-fold: 1) It helps people that live here understand their past; 2) It educates children and young people who are not getting their history taught in school on this level (History is not assessed, therefore it is neglected.); 3) It calls attention to these stories to our local and national press, as well as historians; 4) It brings a new appreciation of the diversity of Western Culture; 5) It makes a wonderful family experience, giving them a chance to "unplug" locally and experience things together; 6) It provides an economic boost to our area, both for the immediate event and then for the residual visits that continue after, due to the publicity and greater understanding of the story. In the case of this event, which is being done in coordination with Forts Harker, Fort Hays and Beecher Island, Wray, Colorado, the public will learn more about the connection of these events just through the publicity - they will realize that none of these events happen in isolation, they are the results of things that are happening elsewhere! All of these benefits enrich Northwest Kansas! We estimate that in excess of 1,000 people from all over Kansas and the Midwest will be at our events at Fort Wallace. For ongoing projects, when will the Dane G. Hansen funds be utilized? The scope of the project is very direct; the "Grand Reunion of Forsyth Scouts and Battle of Beecher Island 150th" will be held over the weekend of Sept. 8-9, These special historians will contribute to the programming of the weekend, and they will be compensated that weekend, covering primarily their expenses. Additional Support Describe additional sources of support (if any) that have been secured or that will be pursued for this project. We have already received sponsorship from area businesses and are pursuing more. We are also trying to raise some money to help the Scout Re-enactors with their expenses, which will be significant, especially the ones that are hauling horses. The will be providing a challenge coin to each participant, commemorating the Forsyth Scouts. We very much appreciate the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism for their grant to all three Kansas locations, which is paying for promotional costs. In addition, we are grateful to the Wallace County Foundation and the Hansen Community Grant Program for their support for other event needs. We are grateful to the national publicity provided for this event by True West magazine and Wild West Magazine, as well as the "Around Kansas" TV program. We have been honored with a proclamation by Gov. Jeff Colyer naming Aug. 25, Sept. 1 and Sept. 8 "Forsyth Scouts Days" at Forts Harker, Hays and Wallace. Sustainability* How will the project/program be sustained in the future? (For capital projects, how will you maintain or operate the item or facility?) This particular program will not need to be sustained. However, we are already looking ahead to 2019 and the 150th Anniversary of the completion of the Kansas Pacific Railway into Denver. Printed On: 25 July 2018 Requests of $5,000 or less 5

6 Evaluation* How will you evaluate the success of the project/program? Be specific. (If funded, this will be helpful when completing the final grant report.) We will evaluate success through: 1) the number of attendees, including re-enactors; 2) the amount of publicity generated; 3) the new friends we make in history community; 4) the number of motel rooms and meals sold that profit our area; 5) the collaboration created by working with other Kansas sites and towns and 5) by completing the event "in the black!" 14 MICHAEL L. BAUGHN 320 Illinois Avenue, PO Box 159 Brewster, KS (H) (C) July 2018 Hansen Foundation To Whom It May Concern: It is privilege for me, as a live-long student of Western Kansas and Plains Indian Wars history, to lend my support to the s grant application to your Foundation. In preparation for an observance of a significant event in Kansas history, the Fort Wallace Memorial Association has been working with other historical associations to present a wide range of public events in observation of the 150 th Battle of Beecher Island. Fort Wallace played a significant role in the events that unfolded regarding the campaign of the Forsyth Scouts, as it was the last post from which the Scouts rode before being besieged by Indians on the Arickaree Fork of the Republican River. The Scouts were entrenched on an island on the Arickaree from September 17 to September 25, 1868, suffering the loss of several men and the Indians suffered losses as well, including the famed Cheyenne war leader, Roman Nose. General George A. Custer proclaimed, that the Arickaree fight... was the greatest battle on the Plains. It was from there that four Scouts, heroically and successfully, evaded Cheyenne and Sioux warriors to summon aid from Fort Wallace for the embattled Scouts. September 8, 2018, Fort Wallace will be hosting Fort Wallace: Battle of Beecher Island 150 th. As part of the programming, the Association is seeking funding for re-enactors and nationally recognized speakers on the Battle. It is without question that the events of the day will be of major educational benefit to the residents of not only Northwest Kansas, but of the region and beyond. Therefore, I would support full-funding of the s grant application. Respectfully, Mike Baughn
