FHSU awards approximately 250 nursing degrees annually, with NCK awarding an additional 60. Many of these students originate in northwest Kansas and return to work in the hospitals, clinics, and skilled care facilities in the cities and towns in our region. HaysMed is fortunate to be among the organizations that employ these graduates, who provide care from cradle to grave for more than 100,000 people who call northwest Kansas home. These nurses and other medical professionals are in every community and serve people with emergent needs, chronic conditions, and everything in between. This project will have an impact on every nursing student and medical professional that has opportunity to experience it. We are excited about this collaborative arrangement with FHSU and confident in its ability to produce high caliber nursing professionals for the region. 4 Ruth Heffel Hays Medical Center Foundation Target Population* Please check one or more populations served by the program/project for which you are requesting funds. Teen (13-20) Adult Project Description* Briefly describe the program/project for which you are requesting funds. Hays Medical Center and Fort Hays State University share a common need to train nursing students and other medical professionals on an ongoing basis. These two organizations have long benefitted from one another as it relates to training and employing men and women in the field of nursing through clinical experiences and shared educational opportunities. A proposed renovation within the existing footprint of Stroup Hall on the campus of Fort Hays State University will expand this existing relationship by creating modern nursing skills, simulation, and health assessment labs designed to recreate real clinical settings for the purpose of training nursing students and providing continuing education for existing medical professionals. These new spaces will be utilized by FHSU nursing students at every level of their training, but will equally be utilized by HaysMed s Education Department for continuing education and skills training to enhance skills and maintain professional certifications. This represents phase one of a proposed two-phase program. It is our sincere hope that the success of these labs will, not only provide early successes for nursing students and medical professionals, but also pave the way for an expansion to the labs in the near future. The concept of medical simulation is not new. Rather, medical simulation in primitive forms has been practiced for centuries. Dr. David Gaba, Associate Dean for Immersive and Simulation-based Learning at Stanford University School of Medicine, describes simulation as a means to replace or amplify real experience with guided experiences that evoke or replicate substantial aspects of the real world in a fully interactive manner. In order to provide the best outcomes for these training techniques, facilities must recreate emergency room, ICU, clinic, and hospital environments in every way while providing the technology infrastructure to review and improve performance over time. Grant Request Description* If funded, how will you specifically use the Dane G. Hansen funds? This is a joint project of both HaysMed and FHSU that will benefit both organizations. Many colleges, universities, clinics, and county entities find the implementation of clinical simulation to be too expensive and too onerous to make the investment alone. Even those with simulation models in their learning plans, like HaysMed, find it difficult to allocate and schedule adequate space to these types of labs. This plan presents a modern and efficient use of space and would advance student and medical professional learning for both HaysMed and FHSU. The attached architectural plan with supporting documentation proposes renovating a portion of FHSU s Stroup Hall within its existing footprint in order to provide a unique space for health assessment classes, skills lab, and nursing simulation. Project Objectives* What do you hope to achieve and how will it benefit the people of Northwest Kansas? The stated vision of HaysMed is to be the best tertiary care center in rural America, providing a scope and quality of services not otherwise available without traveling outside the region. In order to provide these Printed On: 2 May 2018 Requests of more than $5,000 4
5 Ruth Heffel Hays Medical Center Foundation services, HaysMed employs nearly 500 men and women with nursing degrees. Roughly 10% of those have advanced degrees and training. All require continuous training to maintain certifications and stay current with emerging research and technologies. Moreover, HaysMed is proud to serve as an irreplaceable clinical learning setting for Fort Hays State University (FHSU) and North Central Kansas (NCK) Tech. Constructed in 1981, FHSU s Stroup Hall houses the Department of Nursing (DON). Since then, the DON has grown in the number of students and programs it serves. Initially offering a Bachelors of Nursing (BSN) degree, the DON now offers a BSN degree, Masters Degrees in Nursing Education and Nursing Administration, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice. In 1971, the DON numbered ten faculty and 100 students. Today, almost 50 years later, the DON has 25 faculty and over 800 students and still growing. While there are aspects of Stroup Hall that were built for growth, there are other areas of the building that no longer meet the needs of an expanding department. For example, small spaces that were once used as computer labs, video libraries, and file storage are no longer necessary due to advances in portable technology and remote data access. These technological developments have left spaces that are too small for classrooms. Likewise, there have been significant technological advancements in nursing education since The invention of simulation equipment has changed the face of nursing education. The demand on existing spaces for skills lab classes, health assessment classes, and on-going simulations has grown to exceed the capacity of the existing communal skills lab space. Not only is it impossible to hold multiple classes in the same room, but it detracts from students experience. Simulated cases bring about depths of emotion including fear, anxiety, and at times grief over perceived failure. It is simply impractical to expect a space with such limitations to provide the same learning potential as more modern facilities are able to nurture. Currently, the DON holds Skills Lab, Fundamentals, and practice lab approximately 30 hours a week. This means that simulations often share the lab space with another class. To account for scheduling issues, faculty have repurposed a storage room to utilize as an additional simulation room. This room lacks all traits of a regular simulation room including oxygen, suction, access to medications in the Pyxis, and cardiac monitors. The current proposal before the Kansas State Board of Nursing is that BSN programs utilize up to 50% of the clinical time in simulation labs. Simulation is recognized as increasing training time for students to practice assessment and diagnostic skills needed to function autonomously. Modern medical simulation mannequins breathe, have seizures, cry, talk, bleed, and reflect realistic patients. Supportive actors are brought in to imitate physicians, family members, and other hospital personnel. Faculty can incorporate realworld experiences without real-life consequences. Simulations are used at both the BSN and DNP level. Due to space confines, FHSU currently uses less than 6% of the clinical time with simulations. With collaboration among academia and industry, a partnership will be developed where all entities are dedicated to helping healthcare institutions provide the benefits of simulation education to a wide range of users. Additionally, at a recent luncheon with regional business and community leaders held on the campus of Fort Hays State University, Kansas Board of Regents President and CEO Blake Flanders communicated the importance of connecting businesses and organizations with young people early in their post-secondary educational journeys. Flanders emphasized the connections and successes in the formative years of a student s vocational and professional education play a pivotal role in their future success and engagement. We propose that the availability of this advanced skills lab will foster skills and successes through exposure to highly realistic guided simulations. The positive feedback between self-confidence and success has been well documented. By providing on-demand access to high risk, low-frequency situations, students and professionals exposed to lab simulations will increase their readiness to successfully navigate the situations when they arise in their patients. We anticipate an added benefit of this modern lab will be the ability to attract and retain high quality nursing students and nursing and other medical professionals to the region. Perhaps more than most, those in nursing have a passion to help people and are drawn to opportunities to improve their abilities to do just that. Timetable for the Project* When is the project projected to begin and end? For ongoing projects, when will the Dane G. Hansen funds be utilized? Construction for the new simulation lab will begin in May following the last day of classes at FHSU. The new lab is anticipated to be complete and ready for skills learning for the Fall 2018 semester. The Printed On: 2 May 2018 Requests of more than $5,000 5
6 Ruth Heffel Hays Medical Center Foundation optimization and repurposing of existing spaces allows this ambitious project to be completed in a relatively short timeframe between semesters. Spring 2019 will see the completion of one academic year with the new facilities, allowing opportunities for retrospective evaluation of the integration of the new spaces, technologies, scheduling, and outcomes. Additional Support Describe additional sources of support (if any) that have been secured or that will be pursued for this project. As illustrated in the attached project budget, funds from the HaysMed Foundation and Fort Hays State University, along with existing equipment, will fund more than half of the projected cost. This represents an historic first-step towards collaborative planning of facilities that benefit both organizations, pooling resources to increase the availability and quality of services at reduced cost to both organizations. Evaluation* How will you evaluate the success of the project/program? Be specific. (If funded, this will be helpful when completing the final grant report.) FHSU will increase the use of nursing simulations by 10 percent, and we anticipate evaluations will show that 80 percent of FHSU students will rate that simulation has increased knowledge and confidence by May Additionally, the simulation labs will result in a 25 percent increase in HaysMed s Advanced Cardiac Life Support classes completed online. This will allow experienced nurses to spend less time in the classroom and will allow them to serve as mentors in the ACLS skills validation component of the class. Finally, the regional nurses served by the HaysMed Education Department will be able to attend simulation classes on timesensitive diagnoses like stroke, sepsis, heart attack, and trauma four times per year. This represents an increase in the number of participants by 30 percent. Sustainability* How will the project/program be sustained in the future? (For capital projects, how will you maintain or operate the item or facility?) The simulation lab will be staffed by instructors and support staff of FHSU s Department of Nursing as well as HaysMed s Education Department. The cost required for both organizations to build exclusive simulation and skills laboratories would be prohibitive and inefficient. By proceeding together not only are efficiencies realized in planning and providing for up-front space and equipment, but recurring direct and indirect costs will be shared as a collaboration of physical lab space, business models, equipment, training, faculty development, scenario building, and technological implementation and support. The completed simulation labs will be utilized extensively at all times of day, taking advantage of educational scheduling demands of both HaysMed and FHSU that are often unique from one another. We value the generous past gifts and future involvement of the Dane G. Hansen Foundation as a partner in providing for the capital needs of HaysMed and the Western Kansas medical community as a whole. Through careful planning and fully funding up-front costs of the lab spaces, ample secure storage, and high-quality, modern simulation spaces and their associated mechanical and electronic equipment and software, the annual cost of maintenance and upgrades will be well within the annual operating budgets of HaysMed and FHSU allocated to the project.
