1 APRIL 2018 Where Students Exceed Their Potential RAIDER REVIEW CHAYENNE BOWMAN WINS GIRLS WRESTLING CIF STATE CHAMPIONSHIP! Rowland High School is proud of Cheyenne Bowman for her outstanding athletic achievement in Girls Wrestling. She is the CIF Regional Champion, Most Outstanding Wrestler (lower weights), and Masters Meet Champion. Cheyenne advanced to represent CIF Southern Section in the California State Tournament and won the State Championship! She ended the season with a 34-2 record; she pinned every single girl at the state tournament. Cheyenne is the first freshman in school history to ever win a state championship, and she is also the second Rowland High School athlete to ever win state. ALEX RAMIREZ BOYS WRESTLING CIF CHAMPION In his freshman year, Alex Ramirez won the Valle Vista League Wrestling Championship. Alex is the first freshman to ever win the prestigious CIF Championship and was named Most Outstanding lower weight wrestler. He went on to place third in the rugged Masters Meet and he was a State Championship Qualifier. Alex will be back with a vengeance with 3 years of high school eligibility left. 2 APRIL 2018 PAGE 2 JANUARY STUDENTS OF THE MONTH-DIANA MA & JASON VUONG Diana Ma has excelled in an International Baccalaureate/Advanced Placement course of study, has a 3.87 GPA, is in the top ten in her class, and is an AP Scholar with Distinction. As an active student in campus life, she has served as a member of A.S.B ( ); Math Club ( ) as President, Vice President and Publicity; Speech & Debate President and Vice President ( ); Health Occupations Students of America ( ) as President and Treasurer; and Choir assisting with technology. Diana is an accomplished athlete as well and is a member of the tennis team ( ). She was awarded Valle Vista All -League 3 rd Place, Scholar Athlete, and Most Dedicated team player. She was also recognized by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune with Tennis Singles Honorable Mention. Her community service includes decorating donation boxes and sorting donated clothes; helped the founders of Human-1-7 provide electronic access to low income families; and interned at Fetchopia Inc. Michelle plans to attend a 4-year university. She would like to attend MIT, Harvard, or the University of Pennsylvania and major in finance/economics and computer science. Her goal is to become a social entrepreneur working for Fin Tech. Her dream is to earn a salary that will help her accomplish her goals to start a non-profit organization helping people that are less fortunate and Diana Ma & Jason Vuong Jason Vuong has done well in an Advanced Placement course of study with a 3.71 GPA and has maintained High Honor Roll status. Jason is involved in campus life and has served as President of the Chemistry Club and President of the Chinese Club. He is also an athlete who has been on the tennis team since his freshman year ( ). Jason was the Varsity Tennis Team Captain and member of the Valle Vista League undefeated tennis champions for three years. He was recognized by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune as Tennis Player of the Year. Jason plans to attend Cal Poly Pomona and major in biology and FEBRUARY STUDENTS OF THE MONTH-MICHELLE LIANG & NICHOLAS PHILLIPS Michelle Liang has excelled in an International Baccalaureate/Advanced Placement course of study with a 3.76 GPA. She is a National Merit Finalist, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and in the top ten of her class. Michelle is involved in campus life as member of the Art Club (President ); IBA (Vice President ); Animation Club (Treasurer ); and JV Tennis ( ). She participates in school volunteering in the IBA Blood Drives and supports the Art Club Paint Night/Artist Alley activities. Michelle is also an artist who has received awards for her artwork. She won 1 st place in the Walnut Valley Water District poster contest, and was also awarded the Grand Prize for her artwork in the Congressional Art Competition. Her artwork is now being displayed in Washington D.C. for one year. Michelle is also involved in the community as a volunteer at Hsi Lai Temple, Buckboard Days Parade Youth Planning Committee leader, and the California Philharmonic Orchestra summer concert as a ticket-taker. Michelle plans to attend college and study neuroscience and minor in computer science. She also plans to attend medical school and would like to become an OBGYN or an ophthalmologist. Her dream is to invest more time in the arts and learn woodworking. Nicholas Phillips has done well having a 3.89 GPA. and has maintained Principal s Honor Roll status since his freshman year. He is very involved in school serving A.S.B. in the capacity of Technology Commissioner ( ); Recognition Commissioner ( ); Spirit Commissioner ( ); and Speaker of the House ( ); member of California Scholarship Federation ( ) and Key Club ( ). In addition, Nicholas is an athlete who was on the boys swimming team ( ) and boys soccer team ( ). He was awarded the Valle Vista Academic All-League in soccer as well. Nicholas has been playing soccer since he was 4 years old, and club soccer since he was 11 years old. As an active member on campus, Nicholas enjoys being involved in school activities and attends all sports events. He has served the community volunteering 4 years in the Buckboard Days Parade. Nicholas plans to attend a 4-year university and major in computer science. His goal is to work at a start-up technology company. Michelle Liang & Nicholas Phillips

COUNTY ACADEMIC DECATHLON COMPETITION RHS TEAM PLACES 3RD IN DIVISION II In June 2017, the Rowland High School Academic Decathlon team began practicing and studying for this year s 36th Annual Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon Competition held on January 27 and February 3rd at El Rancho High School in Pico Rivera. The Los Angles County Academic Decathlon is a rigorous two-day scholastic team competition testing knowledge and skills of high school students who compete against other schools for gold, silver, and bronze medals. Students are tested in ten subjects: Art, Economics, Language and Literature, Mathematics, Music, Science, Social Science, Essay, and Speech and Interview. The finale is the Super Quiz, a fast-moving team relay event, which takes place in front of other teams and an audience of supporters. Academic Decathlon is not just for gifted students. In fact, each school team consists of 9 students, divided among three grade point average categories - "A" or Honors, "B" or Scholastic, and "C" or Varsity. Rowland High School competed against 42 other schools from Los Angeles County, and came in 16th place overall in their division. Their hard work and dedication paid off; the team was awarded the bronze medal and a team trophy for placing 3rd in the Super Quiz in Division II at this year s awards banquet. In addition, the team received 17 individual team medals for the performance in individual events. The Qualifying Competition specifically awards the top 5 places and the opportunity to attend the next level and compete against others throughout the state of California! NEWLY ELECTED REGION 9 OFFICERS Nicole Zhang, President (Junior) Ashley Leung, Vice President (Junior) Diane Chen, Secretary (Sophomore) Sophia Htay, Treasurer (Sophomore) Cecilia Wang, Historian (Sophomore) The final results and competitors who qualified for the State Competition are as follows: Chapter in Review Display and Portfolio A team event - recognizes chapters that develop and implement a well-balanced program of work and promote FCCLA and Family and Consumer Sciences and/or related occupations and skills to the community. 1 st Place - Presenter Diane Chen/Sophomore, Chapter Historian Environmental Ambassadors Sr. Division Team Event A team event - recognizes participants that address environmental issues that adversely impact human health and well-being and who actively empower others to get involved. 1 st Place Senior Division - Juniors Ashley Leung, Wing Yee Sze & Nicole Zhang Salad Preparations- Jr. Division An individual event - participants demonstrate the knowledge and skills developed in Family and Consumer Sciences courses to prepare a salad and salad dressing for home use based on the state theme. Participants are critiqued on their work space, safety and sanitation, and knife skills. 3rd place - Angelina Simionescu, Freshman Next stop: State Competition - Fresno, CA - April 28-May 1, 2018

5 APRIL 2018 PAGE 5 RHS Future Business Leaders of America Win 38 Awards at the Regional Competition FBLA is a national leadership and business-education oriented organization that offers leadership opportunities and competitions in business topics. This year, the RHS chapter sent 40 competitors to the Southern Section competition in February at Valencia High School in Placentia. Over 850 students from 22 schools competed at the event. Rowland students received 38 awards for placement in the top ten in various events, and 22 placed in the top five. Twenty students qualified to move on to the State Competition April th at the Ontario Convention Center. The chapter advisers, Caroline Manookian and Dan Luna, are proud of their students performance and they are looking forward to placements at the State Competition. 6 APRIL 2018 PAGE 6 GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL & GIRLS VARSITY SOCCER TEAMS WIN VALLE VISTA CHAMPIONSHIPS GIRLS BASKETBALL The Rowland High School Lady Raiders won the Valle Vista League Championship and making it a 3peat - winning consecutive years 2016, 2017 & The team had several injuries before and during the season which could have resulted in a less than favorable outcome, but this amazing team overcame adversity on and off the court. In fact the team was not favored to win league with less than 15 games, but the team overcame adversity and predictions to become League Champs! 2018 Valle Vista Champions Rachel Capinia - MVP Kaylin Ngo - 1 st Team All League Faith Castillo - 1 st Team All League Nicole Woo - 2 nd Team All League Teresa Chang - 2 nd Team All League Isabela Wu - Honorable Mention Kristen Lu - Honorable Mention 3-Time League (Consecutive) Champions GIRLS SOCCER The Girls Varsity Soccer team are the winners of the Valle Vista Championship with a league record of 8 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie; with an overall record of 14 wins, 7 losses, and 1 tie. The team advanced to the CIF Division 5 playoffs. They also earned 3rd place out of 16 teams in the prestigious Ontario Christian Tournament with a tournament record of 3 wins and 1 loss. This I-beam was placed in the new building that is under construction that will house the new Performing Arts Center.
