2 Maot Chitim of Greater Chicago Maot Chitim of Greater Chicago delivers 5,000 Rosh Hashanah and 5,000 Passover food boxes to needy Jews who live in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. Bulk shipments are also provided to several thousand needy in shelter houses, health care institutions and Jewish prisoners throughout the state. Volunteers are needed to assemble boxes, pack perishable and non-perishable food and deliver the food boxes to the needy so they may observe the holidays in a traditional and dignified manner. Additionally, teams of volunteers meet trucks at large subsidized buildings to distribute boxes to individual apartments. Volunteers are also able to spend time with the recipient(s) in their homes or apartments. Volunteers: Unlimited Join TOV Tutoring for the School Year! JEWISH UNITED FUND TOV Tutoring places volunteers in Chicago area Jewish Day Schools. The project s goal is to help elementary and middle school children enhance their academic skills. In just one hour a week, volunteers can make a real impact on a child s academic and personal life. As a volunteer with TOV Tutoring, you can either work with students in the classroom during the week or at the Bernard Horwich JCC on Sundays. Volunteers must be college-age or older and must commit to tutoring for the full academic year. 3 JUF TOV Volunteer Network 2011 Fall Mitzvah Mania To sign up for a project, call TOV at or go online at The JUF TOV Volunteer Network connects volunteers with numerous social service agencies throughout the Chicago area. TOV is designed to engage members of our community in the mitzvah of tikkun olam, repairing our world. Family Friendly projects welcome adults with children so that children can learn the true meaning of tikkun olam. Volunteer opportunities are limited, so please contact TOV soon! Due to the popularity of these opportunities, each individual/group can register for a maximum of two projects unless space permits. You will receive a confirmation or letter with all the necessary information regarding your assignment. *The JUF TOV Volunteer Network office will be closed Thursday, September 29 and Friday, September 30 for Rosh Hashanah; Thursday and Friday, October 13 and 14 and Thursday and Friday, October 20 and 21 for Sukkot; and Thursday, November 24 for Thanksgiving. 4 Here is a list of the agencies participating in this year s Fall Mitzvah Mania! *Listings with an asterisk are part of the JUF/JF partnership of agencies serving the Chicago and worldwide Jewish community. *The ARK The ARK provides free social and medical services to help distressed members of the Chicagoland Jewish community return to self-sufficiency. Today, The ARK improves the quality of life for more than 3,500 needy individuals by providing a broad array of vital human services, including food; shelter; clothing; medical, dental and eye care; pharmacy services; legal aid; emergency financial assistance; and much more. Brentwood North Nursing and Rehabilitation Center For more than 25 years, Brentwood has provided long-term, sub-acute and rehabilitation services for over 100 residents. The Center organizes a variety of recreational programs for the residents in its dementia, rehabilitation, skilled nursing and longterm units. The Center for Enriched Living The Center strives to help people of all ages with developmental disabilities lead more independent and fulfilling lives through education, recreation and social activities in a safe, fun and welcoming environment. *CJE SeniorLife CJE SeniorLife assists older people and their families through quality programming. The services offered include physical and/or psychological assistance to elders in their own homes, adult day services, and full-time care and protection in a long-term care facility. *CJE SeniorLife Adult Day Services Adult Day Services provides weekday traditional adult day-care programs and Alzheimer s care with kosher meals, outings and activities. *CJE SeniorLife Gidwitz Place Gidwitz serves older adults who require a supportive environment yet still wish to live as independently as possible. *CJE SeniorLife Lieberman Geriatric Health Centre Lieberman is a skilled-nursing facility offering social, recreational and rehabilitative programs. Franciscan Outreach Association Since 1963, Franciscan Outreach Association (FOA) has provided emergency and long-term services to poor and homeless individuals in Chicago. The Marquard Center soup kitchen serves a hot, sit-down meal to approximately 100 guests every night of the year, in addition to providing laundry, shower and casemanagement services. The Franciscan House Shelter holds up to 250 individuals each night and provides two meals, showers, a medical clinic, an interim housing program and case management services. 4 MITZVAH MANIA FALL 2011

5 *Jewish Child and Family Services (JCFS) Jewish Child & Family Services provides an array of programs serving thousands of children, adults and families through the diverse Chicago community each year. Services include counseling, treatment for individuals with disabilities, respite care, special educational programs and residential care of abused and neglected youth. The Dina and Eli Field EZRA Multi-Service Center coordinates the Cafe under the auspices of the Jewish Community Centers of Chicago. The Cafe, which is the first kosher anti-hunger program in Chicago, provides meals to people who are hungry while nourishing their spirits. A Just Harvest A Just Harvest s mission is to reduce poverty and hunger in Rogers Park and the greater Chicago community by providing nutritious meals daily while building a just society through advocacy and collaborative relationships across racial, cultural and socioeconomic lines to promote the well-being of patrons served. Kids Enjoy Exercise Now (KEEN) KEEN is a volunteer organization that provides free one-to-one recreational opportunities for children and young adults with mental and physical disabilities. At each KEEN session, a participating athlete is paired with a volunteer coach for a variety of age-appropriate recreational activities. Lambs Farm Lambs Farm serves developmentally disabled adults. Its mission is to empower people with developmental disabilities to lead personally fulfilling lives. Park District of Highland Park The Park District of Highland Park, founded in 1909, operates and manages over 650 acres of land in 44 park areas, and offers approximately 3,000 recreation and seasonal programs. Pushing the Envelope Farm Pushing the Envelope Farm aims to build vibrant Jewish life by connecting to the land. With a 14-acre site, the Farm raises goats, chickens, bees and fruit trees in addition to a vegetable garden. Through farming, nature education and creative programming, the Farm hopes to renew Jewish life in the greater Chicago area. Temple Sholom of Chicago s Monday Meal Temple Sholom, founded in 1867 and one of Chicago s oldest synagogues, affirms Judaism as a dynamic and motivating force in the lives of its congregants. The Temple sits in the forefront of Reform Judaism, educating both young and old, presenting lectures and programs of broad appeal, serving the disadvantaged in the community and helping those searching for new forms of worship and expression within Jewish heritage. Women in Need Growing Stronger (WINGS) WINGS is an agency that works with suburban homeless women and children and victims of domestic violence. Contact TOV at or 5
