2 PMC Headquarters How to use this handbook How To Use This Handbook We strongly encourage all riders and volunteers to carry this book with them throughout the weekend. It is an invaluable resource. In addition to providing general information about the PMC, fundraising and preparing for the weekend, it includes a tabbed reference for every site as well as an index for quick topic referencing. Color tabs break the handbook into sections Directions Parking Information Site Maps Rider Schedules Volunteer Shift Schedules Site Timelines Frequently Asked Questions The Rider FAQ section is particularly helpful for both riders and volunteers. For questions about any site, flip to the tabbed section and scroll (the subjects are listed alphabetically) until you find the subject of your question. For example, at the Sturbridge start, a rider may ask: Where will I find my luggage when I arrive at MMA? - flip to the rider FAQs section, find MMA, and then Luggage. Where do I pick up my luggage when I arrive at MMA? Riders staying on the ship or in dorms: luggage is delivered to the hallway outside their rooms. Riders tenting or staying off campus: luggage is located on the basketball courts. How to use In addition to this handbook, you will find a multitude of information on the PMC website, including egift online giving, training tips, PMC photos and videos, PMC Classifieds, the PMC Store, and more. Read the Rider and Volunteer Information sections to see how you can use your MyPMC page to manage your event logistics. 04 Message From Billy Starr 05 PMC Weekend 05 Route Information 06 Route Map 07 Weekend Schedule 07 Meeting Family and Friends 08 No Smoking 08 Opening Ceremonies 09 Road Safety & Medical Coverage 09 Mandatory Requirements For Participation 09 Safety Tips 10 Rules of Conduct 11 PMC Medical Coverage 11 Hyponatremia Information 11 Road Etiquitte & Safety 12 Rider Tracking 13 Rider Information 14 FitCorp Training & Nutrition Zone 14 Rider Amenities 15 Packing Right and Light 16 Rider Schedules 22 Rider FAQs Table of Contents

Together, we have raised $338 million for cancer research and patient care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute though it s Jimmy Fund. Along the way, we have become a uniform paceline, as committed to each other and our event as we are to the cause. This year, we ll set out on 11 routes that span 360 miles between Sturbridge, Wellesley, Sharon, Bourne and Provincetown. More than 5,500 of us will ride to raise $36 million and bring the PMC s 33-year fundraising total to $374 million. More than 3,100 volunteers will assist our effort, beginning with office work in the spring and summer, along the routes on PMC weekend, and back in the office in the fall as all the money we collectively raised comes due. Increasingly, PMC volunteers are fundraisers too. In 2011, volunteers raised $1.7 million of the $35 million the PMC donated to Dana-Farber. For the past five of its 33 years, the PMC has given 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar directly to DFCI, a pass-through efficiency rate nearly unheard of within the athletic fundraising industry. We are a committed group and we have high expectations. In addition to the efforts made by PMC riders, financial supporters, and volunteers, PMC corporate sponsors are extremely important to the success of our event. More than 200 PMC corporate sponsors donate goods and services to the PMC that keep our riders strong. From burgers and water to refrigerated trucks and bicycle chains, PMC corporate contributions are important to the PMC s success and fundraising efficiency. Thank you for committing to the PMC and for joining our family. The great feeling we share during and after the ride is our reward for our fundraising and athletic efforts. But the gratitude extended by those who suffer from cancer, their family members, and the doctors and researchers at Dana-Farber who put the money we raise to good use, is our greatest reward. I ll see you on the road, Billy Starr 03 04

4 PMC Weekend Route Information One Event: 10 Routes, 4 Sunday Finishing Destinations The PMC provides routes that cater to your level of cycling and weekend agenda. The original first-day route, Sturbridge to Bourne, is the longest and most difficult. The first 50 miles are hilly. The mileage of the Wellesley to Bourne route is formidable, but the route is much less difficult than the Sturbridge to Bourne ride. There are two finish lines in Provincetown, the original PMC route s Provincetown Inn and the alternative Family Finish. Riders guests are not allowed on site at the Provincetown Inn. The Family Finish is for those who intend to rendezvous with family members and friends. It offers most of the amenities of the Provincetown Inn, as well as games and entertainment for children. The finish line in Wellesley offers a family friendly atmosphere in the metro Boston area. Riders who finish at Patriot Place can be greeted by friends and family and take a bus back to the Wellesley hub site for post ride festivities. No matter which route you choose Bourne, Wellesley, Sturbridge, or Provincetown you will enjoy an unbelievable feeling of accomplishment when you cross the finish line. You will have done something to fight cancer. 5 PMC Weekend PMC Weekend Schedule The weekend begins with the PMC Opening Ceremonies, which take place Friday evening in Sturbridge and is broadcast on WCVB-TV Channel 5. For most riders, the PMC begins on Friday afternoon when they make their way to their official starting location. For many volunteers, the weekend starts on Wednesday or Thursday before the event, with setup responsibilities at one of the major sites or waterstops. The ride begins Saturday morning at 5:30 a.m. in Sturbridge and at 7:00 a.m. in Wellesley. All oneday and two-day riders will merge at the Dighton- Rehoboth waterstop for lunch and finish on Saturday afternoon at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) in Bourne. Volunteers are stationed at waterstops approximately every 20 miles along the routes to support the riders by serving food, parking bikes, and taking care of all medical and mechanical needs. In Bourne, the PMC riders celebrate the end of a full day of cycling with live music, an all-you-caneat buffet, and a well-earned 15-minute massage. On Saturday evening, one-day riders return to Wellesley or Sturbridge by bus or their own mode of transportation. Although some two-day riders spend Saturday night off campus, most have overnight accommodations at MMA. Sunday morning at MMA begins with reveille at 4:40 a.m. and breakfast served by PMC volunteers. Most riders are on the road to either Provincetown or Wellesley by 5:00 a.m. In Wellesley, those riding the one-day loop depart at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday morning from Babson College and meet up with riders returning from MMA at the waterstop at Patriot Place. On Sunday afternoon, volunteers greet riders at four finish points: Provincetown Inn and Family Finish in Provincetown, the Patriot Place waterstop, and Babson College in Wellesley. Meeting Family and Friends along the Route We recommend that riders and volunteers who want to meet up with friends and family at spots along the route carry a cell phone in their ride jersey. Guests will not be allowed past the family area on the MMA campus or on the grounds of the Provincetown Inn, so you must coordinate meeting places that are nearby. There are designated rendezvous sites on the MMA grounds, after the Finish Line, and at the Winslow Street field near the Family Finish in Provincetown. Signs and volunteers will direct PMCers and guests to the appropriate meeting places. Though friends and family bring spiritual nourishment to PMC waterstops, the food onsite is generously donated by PMC sponsors and is allocated for riders and volunteers only. Smoking is NOT Allowed During PMC Activites The PMC is an athletic event and as such, we must consider the health of those around us. Please keep in mind that the PMC benefits Dana-Farber Cancer Institute; many PMC riders and volunteers have family members who have been touched by lung cancer and other smoking-related diseases. Please, if you smoke, leave your cigarettes at home. Opening Ceremonies and WCVB-TV s Chronicle Magazine Friday, August 3, 6:30-8:30 P.M. Opening Ceremonies will run from 6:30-8:30pm on August third in the Hawthorne Room at the Sturbridge Host Hotel. WCVB s Chronicle, dedicated entirely to the PMC, will run from 7:30-8:00pm as part of our presentation. All riders are invited to attend the ceremonies at SHH, where it will also be broadcast in the Rider Registration area and tennis court. Riders who do not wish to travel to Sturbridge can also view the program in the Trim Parking Lot at Babson college or via the streamed program online PMC Weekend

6 Road Safety & Medical Coverage Mandatory Requirements for Participation Helmets (US CPSC-approved) must be worn riding. Headphones, ipods, and radios are not permitted while riding SAFETY tips for safe group riding by the League of American Bicyclists Be Predictable. Group riding requires even more attention to predictability than riding alone. Other riders expect you to continue straight ahead at a constant speed unless you indicate differently. Use Signals. Use hand and verbal signals to communicate with fellow cyclists and with other traffic. Hand signals for turning and stopping are as follows: left arm straight out to signal a left turn; left arm out and down with your palm to the rear to signal slowing or stopping; and for a right turn, put your right arm straight out or put your left arm out and up. Give Warnings. Warn cyclists behind you well in advance of changes in your direction or speed. To notify the group of a change in path, the lead rider should call out left turn or right turn in addition to giving a hand signal. Announce Hazards. When riding in a group, most of the cyclists do not have a good view of the road surface ahead, so it is important to announce holes, glass, sand, grates, and other hazards. The leader should indicate hazards by pointing down to the left or right, and by shouting hole, bump, etc. where required for safety. Watch Out at Intersections. When approaching intersections that require vehicles to yield or stop, the lead rider will say slowing or stopping to alert those behind to the change in speed. When passing through an intersection, some cyclists say clear if there is no cross traffic. Note that each cyclist is responsible for verifying that the way is indeed clear Watch for Traffic Coming From the Rear. Riders in front cannot see traffic approaching from the rear. It is the responsibility of the riders in back to inform other cyclists by saying car back. It is also helpful to warn of traffic approaching from the front with car up. Change Positions Correctly. Generally, slower traffic stays right. You should pass others on their left. Say on your left to warn the cyclist ahead of you that you are passing. If you need to pass someone on the right, say on your right clearly since this is an unorthodox maneuver. Leave a Gap for Cars. When riding up hills or on narrow roads with traffic, leave a gap for cars between every three or four bicycles to allow motorists the ability to pass. Move Off the Road When You Stop. Whether you are stopping due to mechanical problems or to regroup with your companions, move well off the road so you don t interfere with traffic. When you restart, each cyclist should look for, and yield to, traffic. Riding Two-Abreast. Even where riding double is legal, courtesy dictates that you single up when cars are trying to pass. Failure to comply with our rules of conduct, or behavior which results in the harm, or potential harm of other riders, may lead to expulsion from the event. Rules of Conduct 1. Ride defensively in consideration of fellow riders. 2. Communicate with your fellow riders, using proper cycling terms such as on your left, car back, etc. 3. Ride single file and as far to the right of the road as is safely possible, except to pass. Pass on left side only. 4. Use proper hand signals when turning. Make left turns from the center of the road or left turn lane. Cross railroad tracks at right angles. 5. Do not cross the yellow center line regardless of passing zone. 6. Obey all traffic signs and signals. 7. Ride in control of your bike at all times. 8. Riding to endanger the safety of your fellow riders Road Safety & Medical Coverage Failure to comply with our rules of conduct, or behavior which results in the harm, or potential harm of other riders, may lead to expulsion from the event.

7 Road Safety & Medical Coverage is strictly prohibited. 9. Obey instructions from the PMC Road Crew and Route Guides and pay attention to information posted on PMC road signs. 10. Each rider is expected to speak out when observing a violation. When spoken to, the response should be in appreciation of the concern expressed. PMC Medical Coverage on the Weekend Medical staff offers basic First Aid only. Any situation requiring greater attention will be treated at the nearest medical facility via ambulance. While riding, carry all prescription medications and your health insurance card in your jersey or bike bag. The medical staff has no I.V. solutions or prescription medications. Please remember to keep yourself well hydrated before, during, and after the ride (regardless of the weather). A combination of electrolyte solution (Gatorade, etc.) and water is best. Also, make sure to snack on fruit for potassium and chips or pretzels for sodium. Hyponatremia Information It is critically important to avoid dehydration by drinking water and sports drinks on a schedule throughout the ride (roughly one liter per hour, starting with water and switching to sports drinks after the first hour or two). Do not rely on thirst thirst kicks in only as you are becoming dehydrated. It is also important not to overconsume water. Over hydration with straight water lacking the sodium found in sports drinks may result in hyponatremia, sometimes referred to as water toxicity. This is a dangerous and potentially deadly condition that can be avoided by switching to primarily drinking a sports drink that contains at least 100 mg of sodium after the first 1-2 hours of riding. Be sure to read your fluid labels as many sports beverages contain far less than this minimum recommended amount. Road Etiquette and Safety The PMC is not a race. The ride is conducted on open roads. Motor vehicle traffic is present. Volunteer Road Crews mark and patrol the routes throughout the weekend to assist our riders. We also benefit from the support of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association and the community police departments in each of the 48 towns along our route. However, riders are ultimately responsible for their safety by riding with caution and respect for all others on the road. Through years of experience in staging this event and because of the growing number of riders, and the variation in riding skills, the requirements and rules of conduct have been developed to ensure your safety along the route. Rider Tracking The PMC uses a comprehensive ID bracelet that must be worn in order to participate in the weekend. The bracelet is your passport to PMC Weekend. Information on the bracelet includes: your name, your designated route, lodging and baggage location at MMA, homeward transportation, your egift number, allergies, emergency contact name and phone number, and whether or not you are of legal drinking age. It will also include a bar code for positive identification. Riders must be scanned at the end of each day s ride. YOU MUST DISPLAY A PHOTO ID OR LICENSE AT REGISTRATION TO RECEIVE YOUR ID BRACELET. Your ID bracelet will be fastened to your wrist. NO ONE will be admitted to MMA or the Provincetown Inn without it. When you register you will receive ID tags for your bike and luggage. Fasten them securely. If untagged, luggage will go to PMC headquarters. ONLY REGISTERED RIDERS MAY PICK UP REGISTRATION PACKETS OR WEAR PMC ID BRACELETS. Consider the impact of an emergency phone call to a medical professional or significant other where the information being transmitted is false or inaccurate! We need everyone s cooperation to manage safety, quality control, and expectations Road Safety & Medical Coverage

9 Rider Information Packing Right & Light The following is a suggested list of items you should consider when packing your bag and preparing your bicycle for PMC Weekend. Each rider is permitted one piece of luggage, which cannot exceed 20 pounds. Luggage in excess of 20 pounds will not be delivered to your room. Please pack as lightly as possible. Transporting your luggage is a major task for our volunteers throughout the weekend. With your cooperation, the task is much more manageable. Please bring only those items essential to the weekend. Please do not hang items from your luggage at anytime during the weekend, as they could easily be misplaced. Bike helmets must fit INSIDE of bags. Do not attach them to the outside as they may be damaged. While our volunteers are very careful with your bike, if you are concerned about the possibility of your bike being scratched in transport, we suggest you pack and apply bubble wrap to your bike if we are transporting it for you on either day. The PMC is not responsible for any damage to your bike or bike accessories incurred while transporting your bike. Please remember to have your bike tuned up PRIOR to PMC Weekend and, please, no tubular tires (sew-ups), if at all possible. To access your site page, log into your MyPMC, click on your site name, then click Site Info and use the drop-down menu to find the correct site. The Volunteer Virtual Rider Fundraising is NOT required for PMC volunteers, but consider this if every volunteer raised only $100, we could donate another $300,000+ toward life-saving cancer research and treatment at Dana Farber. Use all the fundraising tools the PMC has to offer and raise $10s, $100s or $1,000s to support the PMC mission. For more information on becoming a Virtual Rider please visit The Volunteer Rider Volunteers are invited to ride the 68 mile Bourne to Wellesley route on Sunday. Register online, volunteer for the PMC on or before PMC Weekend and raise a minimum of $1,000 to participate. Volunteer riders are welcome to bring their own tent to stay overnight in Bourne on Saturday, and will receive information about a Sunday morning rendezvous location to start the ride. Volunteer Responsibility Code The PMC infrastructure relies on an army of volunteers who generously donate their time and energy to the event. Failing to stay for your entire shift might unfairly burden fellow volunteers as well as the riders. Volunteer Check-In As a volunteer, you must register at each site to which you are assigned. During the check-in process, you will receive a volunteer identification bracelet. At your first site, you will receive a volunteer T-shirt and nametag for the weekend. Once you have registered, you will be given a rendezvous point where you will meet your crew leaders and other members of your team. The PMC uses a comprehensive ID bracelet that must be worn on your wrist at all times during the weekend. The bracelet you receive is site-specific. If you work at more than one site, you must register at each site to receive the proper identification bracelet, which doubles as your site meal ticket. YOU MUST DISPLAY A PHOTO ID OR LICENSE AT REGISTRATION TO RECEIVE YOUR ID BRACELET. ONLY REGISTERED VOLUNTEERS MAY WEAR PMC ID BRACELETS. Meeting with Your Crew Leader Most leaders start the day by providing an orientation for their volunteer crew. Be sure to alert your leader if you have any physical limitations. Crew Leaders may choose to assign specific responsibilities to crew members, while others will keep crew positions more general. Please recognize that if you arrive late, your Crew Leader may not have time to share an overview of the date with you. If this is the case, please do your best to pitch in and ask questions of fellow volunteers. If you are unsure of what you should be doing and cannot locate your Crew Leader, please ask an alumni volunteer Volunteer Information

24 Volunteer Information PMC Road Crew The PMC Road Crew is a mobile crew of approximately 80 volunteers who support the riders during the event. Comprised of medical and bike mechanic staff members, the Road Crew is a weekend-long commitment. Members of the Road Crew will be paired and assigned to a support vehicle, which is equipped with medical and mechanical supplies, as well as radios for communication across the fleet and with PMC Command. Throughout the weekend Road Crews respond to incidents, as directed by PMC Command, and patrol the routes to assist riders with mechanical or medical issues. As the event winds down on Saturday, Road Crews will be directed to MMA and mechanics will set up and assist riders with mechanical issues. Two other elements within the Road Crew are the Sign and Transportation Crews. The Sign Crew works during the week preceding the PMC. to post the directional arrows and informational signs along the PMC routes, as well as check the routes for missing signs during the weekend. Sign Crew volunteers work one or more days during the pre-event week, depending on their particular assignments. The Transportation Crew works during the event weekend, under the direction of PMC Command, to transport riders who cannot continue, as well as riders who might need to be picked up at medical facilities. Directions Please refer to the Hub Site sections for maps and directions to PMC sites. All Road Crew members will be assigned a starting point on the PMC Weekend. Crew members volunteering on the Sturbridge-to-Bourne route will begin at the Sturbridge Host Hotel; members working the Wellesley-to-Bourne route will start from Babson College. Personal Vehicle Parking Sturbridge: Please follow signs for parking towards Old Sturbridge Village. Wellesley: Friday: Parking is available in the Athletic Deck Garage. 30 Volunteer FAQs: General Information Volunteer FAQs General Info General Information I can t find my crew. What should I do? Please return to Volunteer Registration and someone will assist you. There is nothing for me to do. How can I help out? We encourage you to take initiative. Communicate with your Crew Leader. If your task is complete, you may find something else to do within your crew or seek to be reassigned to a crew that needs more assistance. Don t be afraid to seize an opportunity. If you are in doubt as to whether something you might do conflicts with what is already being done, feel free to check with your Crew Leader. Often the biggest job at any site is clean up, and it is always helpful to get a head start on this task during the day. I did not sign up for this crew. Why was my position changed? In the words of one of our volunteer leaders, It s not about what you want to do, but where you are needed. While we do our best to plan for the weekend, inevitably we find that resource management varies greatly within the sites. Please remain flexible. Our job as volunteers is to support our riders in the best way possible so that we can raise more money for the Jimmy Fund. We will do our best to give volunteers an opportunity to work where their interests lie, but this cannot be achieved in every instance. Volunteer Ride Where do I register for the Sunday Volunteer Ride to Wellesley? At Mass Maritime Academy register at Volunteer Registration on Saturday between noon and 6 p.m. or at the Information Booth between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday or between 4:45 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. Where do I sleep? You are welcome to sleep in your own tent or share a PMC tent if there is availability. Volunteer FAQs: General Information Am I expected to work the entire shift? What if I cannot work an entire shift? When selecting a work assignment, please carefully consider the duration of the shift. Crew Leaders plan on the participation of all assigned volunteers for the entire duration. If you think you will not be able to commit for the entire shift, please consider another opportunity. Volunteers will be asked to pitch in wherever needed throughout the duration of their assigned shift

31 59 60 Volunteer FAQs: PMC Road Crew PMC Road Crew Please note that all Road Crew policies and procedures will be covered in the pre-event training sessions and in the Road Crew Manual you will receive on PMC Weekend. When do I need to arrive for my shift? If you will be taking the Road Crew bus from Babson on Friday afternoon, you should be at the campus no later than 3:30 p.m. If you are meeting the Crew in Sturbridge, you should plan to be there and check in no later than 6:30 p.m. Your Crew Leader will be contacting you prior to the event to confirm your travel arrangements. Where will I eat and sleep during PMC Weekend? You will stay at a hotel in the Sturbridge area on Friday night. The PMC will provide meals throughout the weekend. Please bring a sleeping bag, as crew members will sleep on mattresses in the Engineering Building on Saturday night at MMA. Crew members will eat at MMA on Saturday night. How do I get home from Provincetown on Sunday afternoon? Bus transportation will be provided to both the Sturbridge Host and Babson College. Can I request the route to which I would like to be assigned? We pride ourselves on making every possible effort to accommodate special requests. However, please keep in mind that we must balance medical and mechanical crews, veteran crew with newcomers, and other considerations, so your flexibility is greatly appreciated.
