1 Volume 84, Issue 10 April 2007 Governor s Message Dear Fellow Lions: Can you believe April is here already, and we only have three months to complete all the goals we set for ourselves only nine short months ago? My two largest goals - Membership net increase and obtaining the majority of members to pledge to Campaign Sight First II, are running behind, but I m sure with a great push and participation by ALL Lions in the District; we can accomplish both of these GOALS!!! VDG Chet, Cabinet Secretary Don and I have completed 57 of our official visits to the District Clubs - only one more (Denbigh) to go. We have all enjoyed visiting with you, sharing fellowship and getting new ideas on how to make District 24D an even better District (if that s possible). We are behind in our membership drive by a net of 38 new members in order to meet our goal. If we can maintain those members we presently have and recruit a net increase of 8 members; we will be even for the year. That will not be the GOAL established, but I will be satisfied that we are staying current with our membership. I attended several GREAT Charter Nights in March - Wards Corner s 60th, Aragona-Pembroke s 47th, Hampton Mercury s 42nd and New Kent County s 25th and had a super time at all of them. In February, my wife Patricia and I attended James City s 9th Charter Night, which was also GREAT! Upcoming on April 14th, the oldest club in District 24D and third oldest in Virginia, Norfolk Host, will celebrate their 85th Charter Night. If you haven t signed up to go, please consider doing so since they will have PID Sid Scruggs as their speaker who is exceptional. Don t forget our Leadership School on April 21, 2007at Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Center in Hampton. All incoming officers should plan to attend this most worthwhile event. We will also have a new member orientation and a Worldwide Induction. If you have sponsored a new member this Lions year, please bring them to this special event. PDG Clay Senecal has planned a great, short school this year (only 5 hours from 8AM-1PM, so all those Lions who complained that previous trainings used up their whole Saturday, can now attend and still have plenty of time for other activities. We had three great Region Meetings in March, and if you missed them you really missed a good time. Thanks to the three Region Chairpersons, and the sponsoring clubs, for planning and making these sessions a fun time. Thanks to all Committee Chairpersons who made presentations at these meetings. They were very informative and kept District Lions abreast of what is going on throughout the District. The food was great also!! This month we have two fantastic events coming up, but unfortunately they are both on the same day - April 14th. These events are Journey for Sight at Fort Story and the Eastern Shore Medical Assistance event at their Health Fair at Arcadia High School in Oak Hall. Each of you has to make a choice at which one of these events you are going to support. I will be at the Eastern Shore Health Fair and VDG Chet will carry the banner at Journey for Sight. WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT AT BOTH THESE EVENTS - so pick one and participate the way you have in the past. We also have the Lions Children s Diabetes Camp at the Triple R Ranch in Chesapeake on April 27, 28 & 29th. If you wish to volunteer to help Lion Sandy Carawan at the Camp, please give him a call at If you were unable to support these activities in years past -NOW IS THE TIME TO GET INVOLVED!! Keep helping those less fortunate then yourselves. We are truly blessed that we can serve those individuals, so I want to personally thank each of you for all you do and all you accomplish. I am proud we are all Lions who continue to SERVE. Plan now for the many events in May: Broom Sale, Michelob Ultra Golf Tournament the 10th through the 13th, and State Convention, which starts the 17th and runs through the 20th. LionDick A New Vision for the Future

2 WHERE ARE WE HEADED? Become More Involved In Your District! What is happening to Service Organizations throughout the world? Are we getting smaller or are we becoming stagnant? With all the community service being supplied by city, county, state, and federal governments are we as Lions becoming a thing of the past? Think about these questions and try to imagine what is going on with our own organization. Why can we not recruit younger members, why can we not get individuals to commit to future positions within the districts? As for recruiting younger members, the younger individuals are already committed to their jobs and family and generally do not have the time to commit to a service organization. Most of these individuals have young children and are involved with their children s activities, whether it is Baseball, Soccer, Football, School, or other activities, so they are on a time constraint. One thing comes to mind, recruiting individuals to serve on the District level. It is becoming increasingly harder to get individuals to commit to serving on the Cabinet. You often wonder, why are there so many of the same individuals serving on the District level, especially Past District Governors, year after year. Getting new individuals to decide to serve on the District level is a problem. Is it because of time, money, or is it something else? It is not a hard decision to make if it is something you really want to try or is something you are very passionate about, think about taking a position. Each District has certain position that must be filled during the year. Many of these positions are mandated by Lions International. Region Chair is something that Lions International is slowly phasing out as a recommended cabinet position. There are many Districts throughout the country that have already eliminated this position. They are leaving it up to the Zone Chairs to handle the Regional meetings. Do we need to set up more Leadership training within each of the Districts to possibly groom new individuals for positions with in the District or Clubs? Most Districts are experiencing this problem and incoming District Governors are finding it increasingly difficult to fill cabinet positions. Districts are finding it more difficult to recruit qualified individuals to run for District Governor and Vice-District Governor. Here is what happens if a candidate is not selected within 30 days of the International Convention, Lions International will contact Past District Governors to see who would like to fill the slot of District Governor. If no one commits, International does have the authority to appoint one. Some districts have had as many as eight working Governors since Is it because the job is to hard, time consuming, stressful, or is it the cost of fuel that is making it difficult to get a commitment? Is it because of work that individuals do not want to commit? There are some individuals that have taken the position as Governor and still had a full time job. It is a matter of scheduling and time management. It can be done. Most of us know we do have individuals within the Districts who are qualified to run for Vice District Governor and Governor. Remember the qualifications: Served as your Club President 3 Years on the Cabinet 1 year as a Region Chair. All that is needed is a willingness to serve, a willingness to commit. An individual does not need to wait for the incoming Governor to ask them to serve on the cabinet; they can contact the incoming Governor and let them know they would be interested in serving on a specific committee. Remember you do not need to have held the position as Club President to be on the Cabinet. 3 The Governors Ball - A Note from the Chairperson Fellow Lions: I would like to thank all of the Lions that attended the Governor s Ball in February. It was a lot of fun to plan and I think everyone that was there had a nice time. The food was great; the entertainment was good; the DJ s (Lions Ray and Barbara Duke of D&D DJ s) were, as always, fantastic. However the best part was spending time with Fellow Lions. I would like all the Past District Governors that attended to know that I truly appreciate you being there. That is what the evening is about and to have so many was exciting. We had some great outfits for the 50 s theme. Everyone really got in the mood. I hope that we can get the attendance up for this great evening in the future. Those that don t attend should really give it a try. It is a fun filled evening! My thanks to everyone that helped me make the evening a success. I truly appreciate everyone that pitched in to decorate, man the registration table, just everything! It is the pulling together that makes it work. I also appreciate the notes that I have received from several of you. I would like to thank Governor Dick for allowing me the opportunity to serve as the Governor s Ball Chairperson. Anything that I suggested, he went right along with. I hope I made him proud!! Again, thanks for being there. Yours in Lionism, PDG Debbie Ivey Governor s Ball Chairperson

4 District 24-D Club Renewal Challenge By Lion Lyle Jackson, District Retention Chairman The club renewal process offers our clubs a structured way to review the strength and health of the club and club activities. Through the club renewal process clubs identify procedures and activities that are working as well as ones that need to be changed or discontinued in order to continue club success. Club renewal is a tool that can help to re-energize clubs and club members and may help satisfy members and promote retention. Club renewal is a three step process: Step 1: Club members meet to discuss and identify - 1) Activities that the club members like; 2) Activities that the club members would like to change; 3) Activities that the club members would like to discontinue Step 2: Club officers complete an easy -to-use online report for club renewal. The report is located on line at the following address: Step 3: A special recognition patch will be sent to participating clubs to recognize their commitment to their members. District 24-D clubs completing the club renewal process can get a bonus. When you complete the club renewal process and report it on your monthly achievement report you can take an additional 100 points toward club achievement for Region Chairs and Zone Chairs are encouraged to contact club presidents and help clubs complete the club renewal process. The MERLW team is standing by to assist any club in completing a club renewal process. MIDDLESEX LIONS CLUB By Lion Bob Cerullo CHICKAHOMINY TRIBAL LEADER ADDRESSES LIONS Lion Mike Hurd called the meeting of the Middlesex Lions Club to order at 7:00 PM last Tuesday evening at the Beacon in Topping. He announced the passing of Lion Games Dozier who will be sorely missed Ms. Brittany Savage, a resident of Middlesex County spoke to the Lions. Ms. Savage is visually impaired but, despite her infirmity, has been accepted to be a People to People Ambassador on a trip to the heart of the Mediterranean this summer. She is seeking financial sponsorship of $5,664 to enable her to make the trip. Donations of any amount, large or small, are requested to help this courageous young woman to achieve her goal. To donate call The featured speaker was Wayne Adkins, a member of the Chickahominy Tribe who was selected by the Tribe and appointed by the Governor to represent them on the Virginia Council on Indians. He has served as the Chickahominy Tribe s board member on the Virginia Tribal Alliance for Life (VITAL) since it s inception in Adkins has been active in Indian affairs since he became a full tribal member at 16 years of age. Since 2001 he has held the position of Second Assistant Chief. Adkins is a graduate electrical engineer and works for Philip Morris USA. He lives in the Quinton area of Charles City County and is an active member of the Samaria Baptist Church. Aside from his many other accomplishments, Adkins is a member of the Chickahominy Tribal Dancers and an expert on Chickahominy history. He explained the meaning of the name Chickahominy. It means The People of the Coarse Pounded Corn. The ability of the Chickahominy to grow abundant amounts of corn made it possible for them trade with the settlers at Jamestown for Copper, which to the Chickahominy was a rare commodity and a sign of affluence. When the first English settlers stepped ashore in Tsenacomoco, now known as Virginia, the Chickahominy Indians were there to greet them. The tribe was granted recognition by the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1983 and is now pursuing federal recognition. Adkins said, in response to a question from one of the Lions in the audience; we are not at all interested in opening a casino. Adkins talked about the efforts of the approximately 1000 Tribe members to obtain recognition by the federal government to provide much needed health care and other benefits for the elderly members of the Tribe. Since his Tribe is one of the few remaining tribes that once lived on the land that is now Jamestown, Akins views his people as very much a part of the history of this country. Adkins talked about the Chickahominy Tribal Center in Charles City County, which caters to the needs of tribe members young and old. Wayne Adkins and his people will be conducting a POW-WOW in the fall at the tribal center. All are invited. For details visit the Chickahominy website at or call The Lions Sight and Hearing van was at Harmony Grove church on Saturday morning March 24. The Middlesex Lions meet the second and forth Tuesday of every month at the Beacon Restaurant in Topping, VA. Ms. Brittany Savage Wayne Adkins

Lion Jim Reid, District 24-D Hearing Conservation Chair, brought us up-to-date on the latest in hearing research and the cost of hearing aids. Little Creek Lions by Lion Marium On Sunday, February 25, the Little Creek Lions willingly worked hard to prepare and serve breakfast to approximately 60 homeless folks at Bayside Baptist Church. It was a labor of love! The Lions got up at a very early hour on that Sunday morning, but the reward was well worth it.
