1 Newsletter For OUR D214 Older Adult Residents Winter 2012 Dear Gold Card Member, My warmest holiday cheer to all of you! I m excited to bring you another issue of your newsletter. As we all get entrenched in our preparation for the holidays, I ponder: Where did 2011 go? Doesn t it feel like time just whizzed by and before we know it, 2012 is just around the corner? Another year is about to end and in no time, we will welcome a new one. Speaking of new, there s plenty of new in Community Education to go around. As we get ready to roll out our spring semester, we welcome a lot of new - new classes, new interests, new hobbies, new trips...the possibilities are endless! Don t forget to peruse the different scheduled performances from our high schools on page 2. There are winter plays, concerts and dances that you can watch for free. As some of these have limited seating, please call our CE office to reserve your seats. Our partner, Northwest Community Hospital, has an interesting article on page 3 - Shingles: What You Need to Know. Knowledge is key so please check it out. The beginning of the New Year is also a great time to start your travel plans. I suggest you look at our travel schedule for 2012 on M. Field page 4 and let us know if there s a trip that catches your eye. Give us a call and we will be more than happy to assist you and work all the details for you. Remember, what sets CE Travel apart is we are a one stop, one shop travel service provider. Not only do we want your trip to be memorable but we want it to be worry-free as well. Last but not least, let me point out that on page 5, you ll see a preview of some of our classes for the spring semester that starts in February. Call our office at if you have any questions and let us know how we can help you. Or visit our redesigned website, and get to know your District 214 Community Education better. Remember, we are here to serve you at all times! Happy Holidays! Sincerely, Michael S. 3 To Your Health Shingles: What You Need to Know Each year, approximately 1 million Americans develop shingles, a painful rash that is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox varicellazoster. If you have had chickenpox, you are at risk for developing shingles, particularly if you are over age 60 and have a lowered immune system. Your risk for developing shingles increases as you age. The virus stays dormant in your body and can cause shingles many years after an outbreak of chickenpox. Individuals can get shingles more than once. Shingles starts with tingling or burning pain, followed by itchy red patches and eventually fluidfilled blisters. The shingles rash usually appears on one side of the face or body, following the path of a nerve. The main symptom is pain, which can be quite severe. It is important to seek medical attention immediately if you exhibit any of the symptoms. Treatment with a medication that fights the virus should be started within 24 hours of symptoms in order to reduce the pain and complications of shingles, especially if you have someone in your family with a weakened immune system due to illness or medications. Blisters near an eye require evaluation by an ophthalmologist because permanent eye damage can result. A person is only contagious through direct contact with the open sores of the shingles rash. They can pass the virus to anyone who isn t immune to chickenpox. If you haven t had chickenpox, it makes good sense to prevent shingles through vaccination. A single injection of the vaccine Zostavax is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for those 60 and older. It is different from the chickenpox vaccine. While it doesn t guarantee that you won t get shingles, the vaccine will reduce the course and severity of the disease as well as limit long-term complications. The vaccine is the only way to reduce the risk of developing shingles for those who have had chickenpox. It will only be covered if you have the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan. Medicare Part B does not cover the shingles vaccine. Why not ask your doctor if you should get the shingles vaccine? For more information about the shingles vaccine, visit If you are in need of a primary care physician, visit the NCH Medical Group online at or call HealthConnection for a physician referral at (This article is not intended to provide medical advice, but rather to serve as a summary of actual issues and should not be utilized as a substitute for consultation with your personal physician.) 3

6 23rd Annual Senior Celebration Day Revisited Close to 1,500 older adults and over 70 exhibitors attended the successful 23rd Annual Senior Celebration Day at the Arlington Park Racecourse in Arlington Heights last May. The event, which celebrates the many wonderful contributions older adults make in their communities, the society in general and our individual lives, saw attendees coming from as far as Chicago, Elgin, Skokie, and Cary. Exhibitors like the Secretary of State set up shop and gave the older adults the opportunity to renew their driver s license and their photo IDs taken. Northwest Community Hospital provided Senior Fit Testing, Posture, Gait and Balance check up, and a Wellness check. The Arlington Heights Fire and Health Departments offered Blood Pressure and Pulse Oximeter Screening while Wheeling Township registered voters. Highlights of the six-hour event included the Ask the Doctors Panel provided by Northwest Community Hospital, entertainment numbers from The Falconaires Orchestra, The Chordmasters, Main Street Opera and Denny Diamond, and winning exciting raffle prizes. The event is organized by a committee of more than 20 staff members from organizations within the District 214 boundaries. 6
7 2121 S. Goebbert Road Arlington Heights, IL / Gift Giving Season 2011 Dear Gold Card Member, The leaves are beginning to fall and the colder weather brings to mind thoughts of thanksgiving, a time to reflect, a time to spend with family and a time for holiday cheer. Of course, we call this the most wonderful time of the year! With the holidays approaching and the season of gift giving upon us, we hope you will consider a gift to the District 214 Community Education Foundation! As a member of the Gold Card Club, we are proud to offer you reduced fees for selected Community Education classes, Cultural & Performing Arts productions, Senior Celebration Day, and free admission to high school arts performances and sporting events. As one of the nation s premier community education programs, we set the bar high. We are committed to serving over 50,000 participants each year through District 214 Community Education programs and services. The generosity of friends like you will help students like Carinna Tello and her family, immigrants who partook in our English as a Second Language program and went on to teach and inspire others. Because local tax dollars and state funding do not wholly cover the cost of our educational programming, Carinna and her family succeeded, in large part, thanks to donors like you who make annual gifts to support our mission. Your gift this holiday season will help to support our Adult English as a Second Language program and our Read to Learn Volunteer Literacy program which instruct adult learners to speak and read at a basic level and beyond. The Women s and Children s Center, Kids on Track, Family Literacy, Adult Basic Education, and the Cultural & Performing Arts programs are presently thriving due in part to your individual contributions. We are so proud of our many programs and activities this year and anticipate exciting innovations for 2012 and beyond On behalf of Carinna and her classmates, and the thousands within our community who benefit from our programs and services, we thank you for making a difference. Thank you for the support that you provide us in so many ways. We appreciate your generosity and your commitment to creating opportunities and fulfilling the dreams of those in our community. This year, more than ever, every gift is critical to helping us fulfill our mission. No gift is too small, and each gift makes an important difference. Have a wonderful holiday season and all the best in 2012! With Our Sincerest Appreciation, Carl R. Anfenson Chair Michael S. Field Director of Community Education P.S. To be eligible for a 2011 tax deduction, please make your gift by December 31st! Your gift will make a difference! 7
