1 Newsletter For OUR D214 Older Adult Residents A robust curriculum of 270 classes welcomed students of District 214 Community Education s Continuing Education program this fall semester. The new semester, which started Monday, September 9, offers courses that run the gamut from new self-help classes to the very popular Social Security and Medicare Planning class. This is an exciting time for Community Education as a lot of thought went into the design of this semester s classes, Teresa Palaggi, Continuing Education supervisor, said. We have to keep up with our older adults in the community as they are redefining what being active means nowadays. Palaggi added that her office has received requests from students to offer more enrichment courses this semester. An encouraging sign, according to her, after meeting an increased demand for professional classes these past semesters due to the recent recession. The clamor for new enrichment classes is a good indicator for us that our economy is on the mend and we are very happy to oblige, Palaggi added. For lifelong learners interested in embarking on a culinary experience, they can choose from 40 classes; three of these classes make up the Holiday INSIDE Fall 2013 Fall semester s Continuing Education classes Active older adult lifestyle shapes curriculum What s your interest? 3 To Your Health Urgent care or ER? You are not feeling well, but do your symptoms warrant a trip to the immediate care center or the emergency room? Read on for five common situations: 1. Possible Broken Bone It is a Saturday afternoon and that game of backyard football got a bit too rambunctious. Now you are cradling your wrist in pain, but you can t tell whether it is broken or just sprained. In this case, it is unlikely that you would need a hospital admission, but it is something that should be assessed quicker than waiting for a Monday office visit. Head to urgent care to get it checked out. 2. Burns You are putting a sheet of cookies in the oven when your hand brushes against the side of the oven. A small, red welt appears, but after you apply cool water to it, the pain subsides. This is most likely a first-degree burn and will probably heal on its own. But if you notice blistering or have severe pain or swelling, you have entered second-degree burn territory, which does require a trip to urgent care. Take a detour to the ER, or call 911, if a burn occurs on your face, hands, feet, groin or buttocks, is accompanied by difficulty breathing, or is the result of electricity or chemicals. 3. Severe Flu Symptoms If you would classify your flu symptoms as pretty normal - meaning cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches and fatigue then waiting it out or calling your primary care doctor is sufficient. But when symptoms take a more severe turn, as in sudden dizziness, difficulty breathing or persistent vomiting, especially in children and infants, then it s time to head to the emergency room. 4. Chest Pain You are experiencing sudden, unfamiliar chest pain. If you brush it off as just heartburn, you may be ignoring the first warning sign of a heart attack. Acting fast is key to survival, so call 911 right away. Other symptoms include pain or tingling in one or both arms, back or jaw pain, shortness of breath, or especially in women nausea, unexplained sweating and lightheadedness. 5. Possible Concussion You slip on a wet patch of pavement and go down hard, hitting your head on the sidewalk. An hour later, you feel nauseated. Head to the ER to check for a possible concussion, which can cause more severe problems later if left untreated. Other symptoms include blurry vision, sensitivity to light, balance problems or a headache that doesn t go away. The key thing is MINOR, says Aakar M. Shah, DO, emergency physician with NCH Immediate Care Center. If in doubt, give us a call first and we will give you an honest answer about where you should take this. Things like chest pain or abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, go directly to ER. This article was submitted by Northwest Community Healthcare. Nearly 50 years after her death, the world is still fascinated by the life, loves and music of French chanteuse Edith Piaf, the subject of the 2007 film, La Vie en Rose. And now singer Martha Carés has channeled the soul of Edith Piaf into a special stage presentation that will be having its Northwest suburban premiere on Sunday, November 3, at 3 p.m. La Vie en Rose: The Songs of Edith Piaf will be presented for the first time by District 214 Community Education at Forest View Educational Extended Tours Oct 31-Nov 9 Hawaiian Islands Cruise Dec New York City Holiday Dec 30-Jan 4 New Year s Rose Parade Feb Los Angeles & San Diego Feb 24-Mar 3 Alaska s Iditarod Race Mar 4-12 Cuba Mar Turkey Apr 24-May 5 Poland May New York City Spring May New Mexico Jun 19-Jul 7 Scandinavia Jul Northern US National Parks Jul Cape Cod Aug Canadian Rockies & VIA Rail Aug Colorado Rockies Sep 5-14 East Coast Gardens & American History Sep Mississippi River Cruise Sep Downton Abbey & English Castles Sep Croatia Oct Paris/Normandy River Cruise Also coming in 2014: Yosemite & Lake Tahoe Nova Scotia Quebec & Montreal Williamsburg Christmas Christmas in Connecticut Call CET at for any dates not available at press time 4 Center, 2121 S. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door, but Gold Card Club members may reserve advance tickets for the reduced price of $12. The show is not an impersonation of Piaf. Artists stand alone as being great artists because of distinctive qualities that they possess, Carés says. To imitate her rolling r s or other mannerisms is not my intent at all. I m inspired by her energy and her artistry, but this is my own interpretive performance of some of her pieces. Carés has appeared with Lyric Opera of Chicago, Florida Grand Opera, Grant Park Music Festival, Milwaukee Opera Company and Chicago Opera Theatre. She has been heard as guest solo artist with many symphony orchestras, and was the grand prize winner of the International Bel Canto Opera Competition. In addition to her concert, opera and oratorio appearances, Carés was seen in over 1,000 performances of the highly acclaimed Phantom of the Opera national Broadway production, directed by the legendary Harold Prince. This is the first time Northwest suburban audiences will have an opportunity to enjoy this special engagement. 5 Community Education News 25th Annual Senior Celebration Day highlights CE, area programs and services Special day at the park Clarence Placek of Arlington Heights, top photo, is shown holding his check alongside CE Director Mike Field. Placek was the grand prize winner of this year s Senior Celebration Day raffle. The very successful May event was held at Arlington Park Racecourse. Shown in various pictures here are District 214 Superintendent Dave Schuler, five NCH doctors, some of the over 80 exhibitors, entertainment acts, and attendees. A crowd of more than 1,500 people flocked to Arlington Park Racecourse last spring to celebrate the 25th Annual Senior Celebration Day. The fourhour event welcomed over 80 exhibitors, five Northwest Community Healthcare doctors who made up the Ask the Doctors Panel, District 214 Superintendent David Schuler, public officials, exciting raffle prizes, and high energy entertainment acts. Committee members from over 20 different organizations in the community, who started meeting monthly in October 2012 to plan the event, brought several health screenings back including: cholesterol, bone density, blood pressure, pulse oximeter, posture, gait and balance, hearing, and senior fit test. Those who performed the screenings included volunteers from the Arlington Heights Fire and Health Departments, Advanced Physical Medicine & Therapy, Lions of Illinois Foundation, Mount Prospect Lions Club, Northwest Speech & Hearing, and Northwest Community Healthcare. The Illinois Secretary of State, a widely popular exhibitor at the event, renewed Driver s License and issued photo ID cards that day. District 214 Community Education, co-chair of the event along with Buffalo Grove Park District, offered free Gold Card Club memberships and provided attendees information on its many programs and services. The May event was made even sweeter by committee members agreeing to give each attendee a Hershey bar. This was to thank each older adult who came that day and celebrate his or her many contributions and wonderful achievements in the community. Stay tuned for next year s date! 2013 Intergenerational Prom 2013 Intergenerational Prom, a rockin success! Some members of District 214 Community Education s Intergenerational (IG) Prom committee, shown in picture, took the stunning wooden replica of a 1950s Chevy for a spin during prom night last spring.
