1 Newsletter For OUR D214 Older Adult Residents Spring 2011 Dear Gold Card Member, Hopefully by this time, the massive snowfall from the Blizzard of 2011 has completely thawed out and we can now heave a big sigh of relief and hope that good weather is upon us as we welcome the arrival of spring. Spring conjures up so many things that sound right and exciting, and here at District 214 Community Education, we are just as excited to tell you what s on the horizon - events that we have prepared with YOU in mind! First is our annual Intergenerational Prom in April. This springtime event is a go with one change. To accommodate all our high schools in the district, we have moved the prom date from Saturday, April 16, 2011 to Saturday, April 9, So mark your calendar! This year s Intergenerational Prom will be on Saturday, April 9 from 6 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. For $15, you get to enjoy the evening with great music, food, and entertainment. Please make sure to call our office at to purchase your tickets. Next is our big event in May - Senior Celebration Day. For the third year in a row, this free event will be at Arlington Park Racecourse on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 from 11:15 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. Like previous years, the lineup of free services and entertainment is impressive and I am sure that you will enjoy the day. Last but certainly not the least, we have partnered with Fun Me Events to bring to you the very first-of-its-kind event at Forest View Educational Center. Community Education, in cooperation with Heartland Tattoo, is proud to present Michael S. Field the 2011 Heartland International Tattoo Music & Dance Festival on May 7 & 8. This event draws international participation and promises to be spectacular. You will enjoy entertainment consisting of music, marching, and the performance of displays and exercises by military personnel as well as rhythmic tapping or drumming, and drum or bugle signal recalling soldiers to their quarters. The show on Saturday, May 7 will start at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, May 8, the show will be at 1 p.m. Tickets are $25. 3 To Your Health Why is Fall Prevention Important? Definition of a fall: A sudden and unexpected change in position usually resulting in landing on the floor. Many people attribute falls to carelessness or a normal process of aging. However the real cause of falls is multifactorial. Conditions like depression, tachycardia (fast heart rate), abnormal coordination, vestibular imbalance, visual impairment, postural hypotension, confusion, decreased sensation, incontinence, poor balance, as well as medication side effects and environmental hazards can lead to falls. One percent of falls by older Americans result in hip fractures. And following this type of injury nearly one-half will not be able to return to independent living. Forty percent of nursing home admissions are related to falls. Doctors and physical therapists have many tests available to them to evaluate the risk of a fall. For safety, both should be consulted when beginning an exercise regimen. As mentioned above, many factors can contribute to a fall, but there are many ways to reduce this risk. An appropriate exercise program to address strength and balance is often recommended. Working with a physical therapist to learn techniques using weight-bearing activities such as tandem walking, single legged stance, use of rocker boards and exercise balls all can stimulate strength and balance. Tai Chi is one form of exercise that has been shown in multiple studies to improve balance and coordination. In addition to strength and balance a doctor should evaluate the medications one is taking. Statistics show that persons who are taking four or more prescription medications are at a higher risk for falls. Medication management is an important factor in fall prevention. Discuss nutrition supplements with your physician as well. The use of vitamin D with calcium has been shown to reduce the risk of falls. There are many things to consider in the home environment. Remove trip hazards like throw rugs, runners, and electrical cords running through pathways. Keep newspapers and magazines off the floor. Many homes have inadequate lighting in the walkways, or may have blinds pulled to conserve air conditioning, making it difficult to see. Consider additional lighting where needed. Bathroom safety is of utmost importance. Use non-skid mats in the tub or shower; consider having grab bars installed into the structural supports of the wall. A bath bench or shower chair can also make washing up a much safer experience. At the bedside, have a wastepaper basket close by for tissue and other items, and keep the phone close to avoid over reaching. Other general safety tips include wearing proper footwear that provides good feedback, not crepe soles which are like walking on a sponge all day. Shop at times when the crowd levels are low. Avoid changing positions quickly. And keep a portable phone in an apron pocket just in case. Take advantage of free screenings to determine your risk level for a fall. Community Education invites you to a fun-filled evening complete with a scrumptious dinner buffet, entertainment and dancing for only $15 per person. Participants will learn basic computer terms, , and how to find information on the Web. If you ve participated in the past, this is a great opportunity for a refresher or to simply improve your computer skills.
